ME2:

I would say Collector Ambush (part 1) because it allows for the smallest margin of error on Insanity - One unlucky stagger could mean death.

Husk and Scion(without Harby around) is just so much fun to bully XP

That accursed Praetorian gave me all kinds of issues on my initial Hardcore file. First file in ME2 and I was still attempting to figure how I could Vanguard bounce and not kill myself. Allies being punishingly useless half the team did not help. Garrus made me say I hate him and it made me feel bad! Miranda I cared less about. :P

The Krogan Battlemaster in ME was challenging on my fresh run years back. When I was better versed - and superior leveled - I turned him into slush with my Vanguard. Singularity was oh so epic that game. Most irritating was the rogue VI. At level twenty on Hardcore/Insanity, that last room where they all rush you was the death of me. Once I played a little bait and trap, I managed however it still was murder.

For the last room of the rogue VI moon mission, what I do is tell my squad to hold positions at the far side of the corridor leading to the room, go in solo and attract attention then come running back to my squadmates and stand inbetween them. The drones will all rush into the corridor and I then proceed to use all AoE attacks possible (e.g grenades) while Garrus sabotages the crap out of them. In a few seconds all drones are destroyed :)

In Mass Effect, the hardest I think it will be Sovereign. Still I like how I use sniper to kill "it" as a final blow which I shot aimlessly.

Mass Effect 2, mission Reaper IFF. So many Husks and Scions and Husks and Scions inside a Reaper!! In Insanity Tali's recruitment mission which can be frustrating.

Collector Ambush on Insanity.

This. First time I had too low levels and weak equipment. No retreat, not much space to use and the enemy just keeps coming. Argh

I never found ME1 to be too difficult on insanity. Just take your time and you'll be fine. The one part that I found to be tricky was the area right after you set the bomb on Virmire going to try to rescue the other teammate. The immunity-popping charging krogan have given me trouble there.

In ME2, I probably spent a good hour and a half trying to beat the collector ambush on insanity my first time. I never had too much trouble with Horizon. The final part of Miranda's loyalty mission has historically given me trouble also on insanity.

The ****ing collectors ambush on that ship on insanity. I was about to go crazy.

And Benezia was pretty annoying as hell too.

Benezia. But that was more ****ty game design than actual difficulty.

The hardest fights are the Collector ambush (though it can be cheesed with Tali's drone, or an engineer Shepard's drone) or the fight with Vasir on insanity.

The collector ship ambush on insanity was by far the hardest part of the series for me as well. I had a few scattered deaths throughout my first insanity run, but I must have had at more than a dozen on that one platform.

I think this is poor level design more than anything. Poor cover with nowhere to retreat to, facing Scions, Collectors and Harbinger at close range with frustrating squadmates who wouldn't stay in cover meant a lot of deaths.

Ambush on insanity like others have already said. After like an hour of getting massacred I decided to leave Thane and Miranda dead and just snipe. I never want to go through something that irritating again.

It's an ambush. Don't expect anyone that makes an ambush to put barricades in the place for their enemies to use.

That's approaching it from a story perspective. ME 2 is still supposed to be a playable video game with balanced levels. No one section of the game should be exponentially more difficult than the others.

ME1: Benezia is easily the hardest for me. I have yet to beat her the first time on any given playthrough. I keep forgetting just how difficult she is and she takes me out pretty fast.

ME2:  I'm split between the end of Horizon and parts of the IFF when you're rushed by husks, scions, etc. (on insanity for both of course, otherwise it's not too difficult). For me, the most challenging parts tend to be levels where vanguards or up close and personal/mobile classes have an advantage. Since my game style fits nicely into infiltrator, I struggle when I'm not allowed to just camp out and kill from a distance.

Are you serious? Okay, I guess the entire game should of been the same skill level as Lazarus Station.

Not what I meant. Of course different places in the game should have different difficulty levels. I was just expressing that the collector ship ambush seemed unusually more difficult than anywhere else in the game.

ME1: Soverign. No doubt. Dam thing keeps jumping around, and shields reset at the cutscene. Grrrrr.

ME2: Nothing stands out, except anytime my soldier runs out of ammo.

The trouble is that the varren all attack the quarian and pay no attention at all to whoever might be standing in their way, and I can't strip their armor fast enough to use crowd control abilities. I don't think there's any place where I've cursed the nerfing of Adepts so much as here.
