There's no hard fights in ME, it's not a very hard game. There's tedious a plenty however, praetorians comes to mind, but these only test my patience rather than my abilities.

Actually, I take that back.

If you mean "Series", definitely the fight when the party meets the first Geth Armature.

You mean on Therum? Eh, that was easy. Just hide behind the crates and snipe at it until it dies. The krogan at the end was what tended to give people nightmares.

Both of these were straightforward compared to the scions + husks on Horizon, and the scions + collectors on the Collector ship, on Insanity though. (Even the praetorian wasn't as difficult, because you could keep running and dodging its beam after taking all the other enemies out.)

The only hard fights is when you not have patience and don't think before you act, no enemy is really hard and some of them just takes time.

If you wish to use this paradigm, then you should also remember to recalibrate "hard" to mean "more  patience and time might be required".

The final stage of Horizon (too include the husks, collectors, and Praetorian), followed closely by the biotic terrorists hostage rescue in ME1. So many throws...

For me the toughest fight so far was the Quarian that gets attacked by varrens on insanity. It gets easy when you bring the right squaddies and the right heavy weapon. But normally i don't really prepare much for the UNC-missions so a couple of time i had crappy preconditions. And then this really gets hard. They are so damn quick to bite that poor woman.

ME1

You may find it silly but there was a mine or something in a planet where i had to fight husks entering the room from 2 doors at the same time. This kept me dead more times than i can count on insanity.

Cant say theres any "hard" fights in ME1 or 2, even on Insanity. Just longer, and maybe more tedious. Tela Vasir in LotSB was the longest fight I think, but still not difficult (and cool enough to not be really tedious). If you dont just run around like a dork it isnt a very difficult game.

I take "hard" to mean "how the hell am I supposed to win?" fights. There were none of those for me. Just "I know how to win, now its just doing it without making a silly mistake".

First time and early on Therum against krogan.

First time on Noveria against Benezia.

First time against the thresher maw  on Tuchanka.

First time against the Praetorian/Scion/Husk battle at the end of Horizon.

That is all.(for me)

Been awhile since I played ME2, but I don't remember any really difficult fights.

For ME1 though:

The last bunker during rouge VI was awful my first time, since then I've learned to take Tali and Garrus with master sabotage and it's trivial now.

There are a number of other fights that can be pretty tough, like the Krogan on Therum, Benezia, and the Rachni in the mine. But after you've done those once you know what to to to make them much easier.

I'd have to say the hardest fight in the game, and the one that stays hard, is the assassins outside Chora's den. With a new character. On insanity.

Funny story, that.  I was doing the Collector ship mission.  Came up against the Pretorian, died more times than I can count.  And then, FINALLY, got it down to just a sliver of health... and the game crashed because iTunes wanted me to install updates.

My computer ragequits for me.

Horizon and Collector Ship on insanity.
At the flying platforms segment of Collector Ship, I literally just gave up on getting the insanity achievement because I kept dying.

Place once squaddie at the end of the cover to your left. and one squaddie at the apex of the forward part of the initial platform. place yourself at the apex of the immediate cover.

In that configuration your forward squaddie will die from harbingers first assualt probably but you should be able to take harbinger down if you pause to aim.

After that revive your forward squaddie and move the left hand squaddie behind other cover for the when the left platform arrives.

Wins.

I would also add that taking out that scion on the right makes things easier since its shockwaves kill your squaddies almost instantly, even if they are behind cover! (grumble). When the platforms start coming aim at that scion and just try to gun him down as much as you can before its platform lands to the right of you. I was a soldier so I used adrenaline rush and sniped him, after he died I focused on the collectors. Another thing, get your shepard to take cover behind the small square of cover to the left so that you a farthest you can possibly be from the collector attacks during the first wave. So hide behind the bottom tip of the "C" not the middle of it.

          v
\\___/

Keep your squaddies near you and behind that C at all times (they have a silly habit of leaping over it if you don't pay attention) Kill the weaklings first if you can so that its just you and harbinger. I used grunt and thane, just as long as you got teammates who can warp and can survive pretty well you should be fine.  I died a good 7 or 8 times almost instantly until I did the following, not only did I beat it on insanity but NONE of my squaddies died ONCE. I sat there with my mouth hanging open , I was just about to change the difficulty because I was convinced I would never do it, amazing what a slight change in tactics can do!

I found this funny so I'll throw it in here anyway. If you want a good laugh and want an easy way to kill that swarm of husks that come charging down that long corridor during the collector ship mission, here’s what you do. Make you and your (preferably sniping) other squaddie and hide behind that one bit of cover right at the beginning of that long path. Make Grunt go riiiiiiiiiight to the end and he'll activate the swarm. While he goes and plays with the husks you can just sit back and pick them off from a distance.  It’s an amusing sight since he just barrels through them like a bowling ball, the husks don’t stand a chance. So don't feel bad about sending him out there to get swarmed, that’s just play time for grunt ^_^.

Everyone complains about Praetorians. I thought they were easy on insanity seeing as they focus on Shepard and leave your team mates alone.

Hardest fight in ME1....That Battle master on Therum maybe. I don't really remember and I was a very high level Liara's old hag mothers cronies were a pain too.

ME2, the end battle. Simply because it wouldn't die and its Collector cronies kept arriving to interrupt my killing time. I hate bosses with cronies.

In ME 1, if I do Noveria first (insanity starting at lvl 1), I find the Kira Stirling (sp?) and Benezia fight to be pretty tough.

In ME 2, NG+ Insanity, Kasumi's loyalty before doing any other missions is hard going.
