A week ago GI revealed the cover for this issue, which had Loghain, Commander Shepard, TIM, and HK-47 amongst others.

Loghain Mac Tir is number nine. Commander Shepard is #12, HK is #15, and TIM is #17.

The article itself doesn't really seem to mean the most influential characters (being that John Marston of Red Dead Redemption is #2 and that game hasn't been out nearly long enough to be an influence), but rather their favorite ones.

Immediately afterwards, the magazine lists (in no particular order) the best Storytellers of the decade, citing Drew Karpyshyn amongst them. Personally, I'm pretty disappointed that they missed David Gaider, but I digress.

I don't think anyone could disagree with this, but I guess it also depends on if his exclusion was deliberate or just a lack of knowledge on their part.

Wow Loghain beat HK, and Shep? Colour me surprised. Don't disagree though, Loghain is a riot. Once you get to the end game especially.

The storytellers thing is daft though, writing for games is most often carried out by a team if anything so to credit a whole work to them seems very silly. Sure the lead writers perhaps deserve the most credit, and maybe they worded it in a way that works in the article, but otherwise I would consider it a wasted exercise. To be honest I don't think the industry supports it's storytellers enough anyway, I remember reading that Bioware is one of the few companies that really supports having a writers department at all.

Also: Marsden at #2? Madness. Especially for a 'defined a decade' selection.

Marsden was a great character though. I really enjoyed playing as him. Who was number 1?

Anyone be kind enough to make the top 30 list out on the forum, without having to get that awfull mag, can't judge just on four bioware chars, and the Clint Eastwood wannabe.

I'm still itching to play Red Dead. I keep putting off picking it up. GLaDOS is #1, and I agree with it--Portal is an amazing game, but it would have lacked something without her.

I think they should have thought of a better title for the article besides "Defined A Decade". Maybe "GameInformer's Pick for Best Characters from the Last Decade", since that's essentially what it was.

EDIT: Alright...

1. GLaDOS
2. John Marston
3. Nathan Drake
4. Master Chief (I really disagree with this one--he should at least be further down the list)
5. Niko Bellic
6. Alyx Vance (See, if Gordon doesn't count, why does Master Chief?)
7. Kratos (He is riveting, you just don't understand!)
8. Andrew Ryan
9. Loghain Mac Tir
10. Ezio Auditore de Firenze
11. Ethan Mars
12. Commander Shepard (They even say "his or her"--mostly!)
13. Captain John Prince (Call of Duty, for those curious)
14. Jimmy Hokins
15. HK-47
16. Elena Fisher
17. The Illusive Man
18. Tommy Vercetti
19. The Boss (MGS 3)
20. Tim (Braid, not our TIM).
21. Auron
22. Rasputin "Raz" Aquato
23. Kaim Argonar
24. Jade
25. KOS-MOS (Xenosaga)
26. Professor Layton
27. Phoenix Wright
28. Wander
29. Bonnie MacFarlane
30. King of All Cosmos (Really now?)

There. There are also groupings of other characters non-listed in different categories. I can put those down, for those curious.

Oh I agree, and I've only played/seen a bit of Red Dead. Just not sure he's #2 influential. Saibh is right though, they should have given it a different name, but I suppose it wouldn't have been quite as eyecatching then.

Edit: Glados I agree with, and I've never played Portal. Great character. Master Chief shouldn't be anywhere near that high though, I don't mind the Halo series (for what it is) but he barely is a character let alone one of the best. Other than that I would have put The Boss and Tim from Braid higher for sure.

Niko Bellic No.5? He was as wooden as a plank, he seriously needed a charisma implant.

That whole list is strange. I agree Niko Belic was pretty awful but then I hated GTA 4. Yet loved RDR.

The Master Chief is kind of odd too, I would have put Cortana in instead of him. While he was the poster boy Cortana was the character that drove Halo's narrative.

Seems more like "Characters that we can remember from the last 10 years"

I think the creators of this have mistaken "characterization" for "coolness." Master Chief? Kratos?

Even characters like Ezia and Niko, though I enjoyed both of them and though both aren't anywhere near as shallow as the above two, aren't really spectacular either. I'd even speculate as to the legitimacy of Shepard being on this list as the character itself isn't really defined, but just about every incarnation of Shepard is better than some of the Generic Action Heros on the list, so I guess it's fine.

Also, did they say "James Marston?" Because it's John.

Well Spotted, even the marston spelling is wrong. Unless it is a mistake by the OP

No, it's my mistake. I've never played the game, and I keep thinking about Cyclops.

Jolee Bindo thinks this list is bull****.  Mordin Solus too busy to notice his glaring omission.

Meh. I like MC. Sure, he's faceless, but has more personality than Niko and Kratos, dare I say.
And...I guess Gordon doesn't count because he doesn't even speak.

I think you were just so disgruntled over him being No. 2 that you attempted to sabotage him by getting his name wrong.:D

Strongly disagree with half the list, so iconic chars like Jeanette and Velvet Velour from Vampire the Masquerade : Bloodlines, don't get included, cause boring mass market driven tosh for chars like Master Chief, Kratos, male commander shepard get forced down you.

Whats more defined, chars that are always on the tv, in ads and non stop previews, or chars that make you go wow, and cause of word of mouth, you remember for years and years to come?

I would put Master Chief at number one simply because he is more iconic than anyone on that list.

Male Commander Shepard isn't significantly different from Female Commander Shepard, I thought that was the entire appeal of Female Commander Shepard, in that she wasn't some sexed up tart ninety pound model hero - and did the job just as well, in much the same way as her male counterpart.

...plus Mark Meer doesn't overact.

Get out of my thread.

edit: Also, they didn't make a distinction between male or female Shepard. They just put "Commander Shepard", and obviously used Sheploo's picture.

I like both of them.  I really liked FemShep in ME1 I just... eh, continuing that ME2 rant is for a different thread.  I do wish they had a model for FemShep the way they do for ShepLoo, though, so there'd be a canon representation for female Shepard.

HK-47 is probably my fave out of those above 30, I remember my first playthrough I never used him, then I remember everyone raving about how funny he was and so I had to playthrough again.

I disagree.
The fact that they appear on tv, ads and previews is called marketing, you know?
