At long last it seems I may be able to ditch my crappy ATI 3870 and buy a new card. However, I've been surprised to find lots of video cards are having issues when running Neverwinter Nights, the only game I really care about. So, ladies and gentlemen, I'm opening a thread where you may share your personal experience on what the "Perfect" system for NWN would be.

It seems new gpu's are not playing nice with this classic game, so don't feel shy about posting seemingly "older" models or configurations; this is all about the overall quality and performance of the game, rather than who has the highest-end pc or card.

My system runs a 2.40 gigs Intel Core Duo Quad, with 2 gigs of RAM, and I'm leaning towards buying a 1 gig Gygabyte Nvidia GTS 250.

So, is it a good choice? What's your videocard, how does it play with the rest of your system, and, most importantly, how does Neverwinter Nights run with it? :)

I have a GTX 280 OC running in Win 7 Pro x64 and all is working fine. I had trouble with shiny water on a pair of 3870s, and research indicated nVidia was better for NWN. That being said, I have also seen the 480 and higher cards have been problematic in NWN.

seeing as how old this game is almost any graphics card within the last ten years will work fine

I use a nividia 8200 gm on my laptop with several hi res tilesets and it works perfectly fine.. except for darkness over daggorford which for some reason I get lag spikes fairly often

oh well

ATI cards have issues. See my post, "movies don't work, sound skips, random crashes".

I know what you mean, Belgarath, and actually such is the reason I'm changing my ATI. As most posters have mentioned over the years, Nvidia cards are the best option when it comes to NWN, so I thought of making something of a pool, where everyone would share their own choices and personal experience; maybe posters could even share detailed info like FPS and the like.

I'm probably buying a GTS 250, as previously mentioned, but am open to other options like the GTX 280 Sgthawker brought up, so keep them coming!

I'm guessing anything before the GTX 460 is good, but let me know if such isn't the case. Maybe we could even find out which is the definite best one to go given any particular configuration of CPU, RAM, etc. So readers that come at a later time may have some reference if they find themselves undecided on this particular subject.

I know, Calvin, that's why "I'm guessing anything before the GTX 460 is good" but why not tell us more about your GTX 295? How does NWN run with that? Nice? Outstandingly good? Not that much?
