Game doesn't render any shadows + performance issues

I thought I'd give NWN2 a shot again, so I installed it on my laptop after not having played it for over a year (used to play...and actually build, too (:P) on an old desktop before).

However, the game doesn't seem to render any shadows at all. Regardless of settings, the game refuses to render any kind of shadows, be they character shadows or from the environment. In addition, my fps is horrible with the shadows enabled, even if they aren't visible. After fiddling with the .ini file and the settings for a bit, I was able to make it playable fps-wise by removing the ati workaround for point light shadows and unchecking "point lights cast shadows"  from the options. And the game looks the same since there are no shadows anyway....it works, but I'd honestly like to play the game with the shadows, like my system should be able to.

Anyone know what causes this, or if there's any way to fix it at all?

System specs (Acer Aspire 8935G laptop):

- Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 2.2 Ghz CPU
- 4 GB RAM
- Ati Mobility Radeon HD 4670 XT 1 GB
- Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

Runs other games just fine, including Dawn of War 2 on medium settings at 1920x1080 resolution, Serious Sam HDs on medium, Left 4 Dead 2/TF2 on high, most new games on medium, you get the idea.

I can't find any reports of the same issue.  In addition to the game settings, you might have a look at your video card's driver settings.

Here are a couple links that might help:  www.tweakguides.com/ATICAT_1.html

First things first... Laptops are not supported, see Is your video card supported? for details.

Other than that, make sure you have DX 9.0c installed, even if you already have DX10 or 11; DX9.0c can be installed even with the newer versions and willl not overwrites those newer versions. Also, make sure that .NET Frameworks is updated to at least version 3.5

I do have DX9.0c installed, as a number of older games need/have installed it before anyway...well I think so, any way I can check that without having to download the actual package? I definitely have MS Framework though, I think it's version 4.0 or greater (have a number of apps that need it).

We're talking about modern laptops here. Considering I can run any and all other games I've ever played with zero problems at all, I think this is a non-issue, as that article was meant for old laptops with integrated graphics anyway. The 4670 XT is essentially the same as a desktop 4650, although slightly more powerful according to notebookcheck.

Drivers are as up to date as I can get them (e.g laptop default). I think I recall others with the same problem before too, saying that the radeon 4xxx series in general have problems with NWN2.

That's odd...exterior shadows from the sun seem to work fine (at least those cast by characters), but any light-cast shadows and environment shadows refuse to show up. And the exterior shadows too cause quite a big fps dip.

I'm guessing it's just some rendering bug which causes both the fps drops and the lack of shadows, because otherwise the game runs very smoothly.

The reason that laptops have never been officially supported are given in the link provided and is primarily due to integrated components, not just video cards.

Guess I'll add my shadow issue here as well. On my Core 2 Quad with ATI 4870 (and now upgraded to ATI 6870), no shadows appear to be rendered in some indoor areas. However, they are rendered just fine on my computer with nVidia 8800 and 240.

Outdoor areas appear to be just fine.

For ATI cards, you may have to play around with different versions of drivers from ATI.
