Hi playing through ME1 again, last time was when it came out! I am playing through again and I'll be taking this save into my first time with ME2.

I have done in order: feros, therum, and now just got the virmire quest. I am trying to follow an RP path and do all the side quests. For RP purposes it would make sense to do virmire right now. Is it ok to do all the side quests after virmire and before noveria, including going back to the citidal freely for a second time, as opposed to the restricted time at the end after all 4 planets? Would this make sense from both an RP and gameplay perspective?

Thanks!!!

From a pure RP perspective, it doesn't really make sense to do *any* of the side quests since you need to track Saren down as quickly as possible.

From a gameplay perspective, yeah, it makes perfect sense. You can do any sidequest any time you want before you hit Ilos. From an RP perspective... yeah, what Stengahpolis said.

From some of the way the dialogues play out, I think Mass Effect was originally going to be on rails like Mass Effect 2 is, where you got certain storyline missions at certain times via Council briefing, and as such I think (again, just from what I've observed from how the dialogue plays out) that you were supposed to hit Feros first, then muck around the galaxy a bit, then pick up Liara on Therum, muck around the galaxy some more, be sent to Virmire, muck around the galaxy yet a bit longer, and finally hit Noveria before being recalled to the Citadel. Would've made a lot more sense. Unfortunately they didn't do this and we're left with a paradoxical situation where supposedly time is of the essence, yet you can waste all of it that you want tracking down a salarian's lost bowtie or whatever, and Saren never finds what he's looking for until just before you get there.

If you're playing an NG+, at least you can just do the storyline quests because you don't have to worry about XP or gear.  Of course if you do that it makes the game about 10 hours long at the most, so... >shrug<

Maybe they were going to, but I think that would have diminished the game quite a bit, since the sense of newness and exploration in the galaxy would be gone. Granted though, that might have worked with the sense of urgency. But I rather like going to Therum or Noveria as my first and not being dictated to doing the quests in their order.

I always go:

Therum>Noveria>Feros>Virmire

Getting Liara first and then taking her to Noveria makes for a good start to the story. Also, I like doing Noveria before Feros so I have a very high charm/intimidate. I tend to do all my assignments just before I head to Virmire, but there really isn't any ideal time to do them that would make sense from an rp perspective.
