Solo #4 – Sword&Shield. Easier than a 2H, just as Random70 predicted, but still I was surprised how much easier it was. I ran low on poultices at level 12 and bought one stack of elfroot from Varathorn. Soon after I got Cailan’s armour and became pretty much invulnerable to mobs. Grabs and overwhelms were not of much concern, either.
Mage/spider combos were still a bit tricky and the High Dragon was still a slog. Veshaille isn’t as slow as a two handed weapon but it is slow enough to be frequently interrupted. A long battle made it inevitable that I was going for rides in the dragon’s jaws – fatal if not near full health. On my third try I started drinking poultices by the bucketful. That worked at the cost of about 20 poultices. I never needed more elfroot from Varathorn , though, unlike the four stacks my two hander required! If I solo another S&S I will use to Duncan’s dagger for the High Dragon – much faster and +10 damage vs. dragons.
I’ve jumped right into solo #5 – rogue archer. Ouch – by far the weakest to start. It took a lot of kiting to survive Howe’s knight in the Origin, even with the Battledress and Cinch, and grenades and several poultices to get through the Korcari Wilds and the Tower. Gazarath was impossible – immune to dirty fighting and pinning shot. I suppose I could have spent an hour running around the nearby pool and taking occasional shots when there was a gap – blah. Things got much easier at level 7 when I got enough dexterity to equip the Arlathan bow and added duelling. A 75% hit rate hurts. I should be okay now except against multiple or elite mages; my spell resistance will never be good.

Solo rogue archer - defeated.
Blast. This was an easy character to solo once I reached level 7, until I hit a brick wall with the Spider Queen - or a poison wall, actually. If not being melee attacked, she just sits there and spits poison. The spits stack, until
I can't drink health poultices fast enough. I never come close to killing her.
If someone has won that fight with a solo archer, I'd love to know how you did it. I suppose I could respec, pick up a few dw skills and bring a rune-loaded pair of daggers but I'd rather not.

Not having good spell resistance wasn’t the problem as it turned out – even though with low dps I often got to experience every spell an elite mage had to throw at me.
I discovered something else stealth is handy for – to hide while a misdirection hex wears off.
Uldred – Easy fight as he never cast a spell. The wiki says he won’t if you stay close but he also never used a massive attack to push me away. Maybe the AI was napping but I didn’t feel like reloading to see.
Boss blood mage in Denerim – Easy with the right salves as he uses only fire and electric spells. His fireball actually helped get rid of his minions.
More annoying was the elite mage with two junior mages. He kept using misdirection hex. I finally managed to do enough damage to him before he hexed me again to finish him off with grenades.
Desire demons – Ice salve ftw.
Zathrian – Fire and ice salves.
High Dragon – Easy as she only grabs melee attackers. When her wing buffet pulled me in I just went toe-to-toe. Dumb AI but I didn’t feel like running around to her backside just for the exercise.
Spider Queen – Ugh. Easy with Alistair distracting her and her brood but no solo trophy for this pc.
Gaxkang – Ice and spirit salves. First time, he hit me with Curse of Mortality when I was at about two-thirds hit points and I missed surviving by one second. Second time, I made sure to stay near full hit points when he was in arcane horror form. Pinpoint Strike helped with misdirection hex.
Caladrius – He uses hexes plus cold, fire and spirit spells but not the nasty ones.
The Final Battle – Lots of spirit salve as every genlock emissary has Curse and every hurlock Crushing Prison. The other salves also helped.
An archer becomes unhittable sooner than a dual wielder thanks to defensive fire. Then only spells, grabs and overwhelms are of any concern. As with any lightly armoured character, a good tip for surviving chain rams is to start running behind an ogre when it begins to ram. You get knocked further away and that usually gives enough time to drink a poultice.
I went for scattershot first then master archer and I never used arrow of slaying. But archers are the least interesting to play, imo. There was often little point in doing anything except auto attack and stealth.

Unable to stay away from the game, I decided to try hard-core solo nightmare – no DLC goodies. And as Big6 noted above, luring is a necessity when you have only starting level gear. No Battledress, Cinch or High Regard and no Cudgel to sell.
The dwarf noble origin was not too bad, with the mercenaries being the trickiest. I succeeded on my second try by pin cushioning the two melee grunts while my companions were getting beat up and then going for a sprint. The archers eventually stopped chasing me, leaving the captain and me to run around and around the darkspawn campfire. Every 20 seconds I could stop, stun and sweep – kinda boring but I don’t see how else to win that fight. I didn’t do Bhelen’s dirty work for him as Trian’s is the toughest fight of the origin and I didn’t know if I could handle it. Sweetly, I arrived in Ostagar with 30 gp in my pocket and Gorim waiting in Denerim to offer me twice the going rate.
The Korcari Wilds quickly reminded me how much more vulnerable I am this playthrough, as four wolves were too much to handle. Second try, I managed to attract only three and that worked. The four stealthed rogues down to the southwest also meant quick death. I found that if I moved slowly and stopped as soon as I heard growls, I could alert only two of them. The elites – the alpha wolf and Hurlock alpha – again required lots of kiting after getting rid of all the grunts. I didn’t bother with Gazarath. It just wasn’t worth twenty minutes or more of kiting and perfectly timed sweeps. The only healing I needed was two lesser poultices to outlast the emissary in a ranged duel.
I purchased the acid and fire bomb recipes from the quartermaster as I usually do but I’m beginning to wonder if I should have saved my gold. It’s going to be awhile before I dare take on a group all at once. A tome at first camp is my top priority. I haven’t decided between a second tome and a GM rune after that.
It has certainly been a thought provoking play so far as every fight requires planning. Fun but nervous fun! Assuming I make it out of Lothering, I think I will head to Honnleath first. I won’t be ready to get the Harvest ring but a tier 5 dagger with two rune slots will help in the Tower.

Ouch, this is tough. Got into the Tower of Ishal easy enough and dealt with the emissary in only a few tries. But the next pair of rooms was a real pain. Rushing into the genlock room doesn’t work because the hurlocks always run up to help. Turns out the genlocks are not as brotherly so the trick is to take out the hurlocks first – still not easy. Level 2 of the Tower was ok but level 3 was reload city again. By the time I got to the genlock alpha I was tired and just ran over and let the dogs out. Not solo purity but I still have 100% of the party damage. I don’t know how I could have truly solo’d that area.
The ogre was easy using the barrel trick and I paid the bandits to let me into Lothering. I hope to be strong enough to deal with them before heading to the Circle Tower. A couple of hours play at a time are probably the limit of my patience.
