Is this game just not for me?

I'm a ME fan, tried this game because I had faith in Bioware.

Yet... it doesn't seem much fun.  I've been spending most of the afternoon in the "Fade", mostly either dying or saving each time I could so as not to do the same fight again.  This game just doesn't seem very fun to me.

This isn't a slam on the game, obviously a lot of people love it.  But to me it seems like trial-and-error gameplay, and even using the wiki "guide" it's still hard - even on "normal" difficulty!

I was more interested in interacting with the NPC's than replaying lethal fights over and over again, so I set the game difficulty on Easy. Once you get over the hit to your pride the game is much more fun.

Perhaps this game really isn't for you. Actually, I had the same problem starting out...the sheer boredom of Ostagar was making me want to pull my hair out. The game got a lot better for me once I got past that and started gathering my companions and really delving into the story/lore of the game.

*shrug*

As far as the difficulty goes, I'm not sure why you're having problems...I'm playing on Nightmare and it still seems a bit easy for me.

OK, you don;t like the game.  Why are you telling us?

Are you looking for advice or something? I assume you are playing as a mage. If you are dying repeatedly on the origin story (the very first part at that) then something is definitely wrong.  What spells do you have and what exactly are you finding difficult?

Wait, no, clearly you must be talking about the "islands", right?  There is no way you're stuck on the mage origin.

The Fade is my least favorite part of the game. Struggle through it, and it becomes a great game. I did it last though, so I was already hooked.

The Fade sucks. Plain and simple. Most annoying, monotonous portion of the game. I can't stand it.

Note - if you're on the PC, there's a mod so you don't actually have to go through the Fade . . .alas, if you're like me and on console, you're stuck.

Maybe the game isn't for you, nothing wrong with that at all. It's looking like DA2 isn't for me. Everyone has a different definition of fun. I like games that are hard enough for a trial and error approach, that's what all games used to be before someone decided that casual gaming was a market. ;)

Before consoles came into existance, you used to have to feed arcade machines quarters to keep playing and they made money by deliberately making you fail at every stage. You actually needed to be good at a game if you didn't want to lose all your money in one hour (or less). That kind of punishment is just not the console market.

By Fade you mean during the Broken Circle quest right?

That's one of the easiest parts of the game. It's more like a puzzle than anything else where you have to use the right form in the right area to progress.

I do the broken circle quest immediately after Lothering because it's easy and it gives you many free attribute increases.

I don't know. But I think if you just don't feel it, no matter how easy or how hard the game is, you still won't enjoy it. Some games get humongous raves and when I try, it just doesn't work for me. And there are some games where I die repeatedly, yet, I just say, "Ohhhh... now I get it... I think... Interesting."

So my answer to the OP, if you gave the game enough chance (for you) and it still doesn't work for you, then you're right. And there's nothing wrong with that. Maybe try it again after a month or so. It works sometimes.

I am a fan of ALL Bioware titles. I do agree that The Fade was the poorest of the story arcs. However, you will find that it becomes much better as you progress into it. I have had the game since release, and I have not traded it in at all, its the game I've had for the longest out of all of my console games. Almost a 2 year record!

LOL - It's never fun if you keep dying.

I felt exactly the same way when I first played - I thought the combat was a bit much and quite repetitive and boring. Though I could never bring myself to lower the difficulty.

It wasn't until I was 80-90% through my first playthrough that I fully understood how to make the most of the combat system and now I find combat a breeze - most of my fights are very very brief, except for the most difficult of bosses which take slightly longer.

I did make it past - though, not really in the way I would have suspected - but I got past.

If that was the "low point" of the game, I'll keep playing; things are getting better.

Until you get to level 10 or higher, the Warden and companions don't really feel capable of opening a door without sustaining an injury it seems. Depending on your class, what talent/spell you take and when will make a very sizable difference in some areas.

I enjoy the Fade myself, but can recall how difficult it was the first time when I had to learn which shape to choose for each battle. But the game is not meant to be for everyone.

Yes, I pretty much think it is. It seems to be most people's least favourite part of the game - so much that someone actually wrote a mod to bypass it completely.
I don't mind it. But I'm aware I'm in the minority.

The Fade blows, I recommend setting the difficulty to easy and googling a walkthrough.

It's not an easy game by any means. You could cheat... makes things a bit more bearable if you don't mind cheating... but my best suggestion for if you don't want to cheat is to make sure your party's tactics are set up proper. The Fade is really boring though, I feel you on that part. Just get through it ASAP, IMO.

Keep plugging away at it. You'll get better, become more powerful and the victory will be all the greater.

But, don't flog a dead horse! If it remains a chore trade it in for something more to your gaming preferences.

Unlike the Mass Effect series this game has a bit of a learning curve but once you go through the learning process it becomes quite easy so don't get discouraged yet.

There wasn't anything about DAO that I found boring. I guess it's each to their own when you discuss any Genre.

I loved BG & NWN...hated the next iterations....loath ME

The Fade is very tedious, and probably the worst and most frustrating part of the game.  There's a mod to make it less so:

There's actually a mod that lets you complete the fade quest immediatly, giving you all bonuses and exp. I think it's in dragon age nexus, quite a popular mod so you won't have trouble finding it.

I agree, the fade was the most hated part of the game for me. It was fun the first time, but after that it was just agonizing, and then it was just game killing b/c i did not want to go there again lol...

that mod was a breath of fresh air to me :D

I think you are being rather cruel to him. What he is doing is asking whether or not this game is for him, and people have replied. I think it may be a bit of an odd  topic, but it's certainly not worthy of being cruel about. Maybe he is stuck on the mage origin, what's so bad about that? People find different games difficult. I don't find DA:O difficult at all, but that's me. He may find it a lot more difficult, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
