Unlike the Mass Effect series this game has a bit of a learning curve but once you go through the learning process it becomes quite easy so don't get discouraged yet.

Every game should have a learning curve, otherwise where's the challenge? ;)

My only comment would be that if the OP is struggling with the game like this then a reduction to "Easy" is in order. It's more forgiving that way (Although it can still be hard at times) and as such it allows for less care and more mistakes. That said, playing the game wrong can still get you killed quite easily.

I found Normal to be quite a jump from Easy, and I managed to die right before the end of the Dwarf Noble origin due to that.

I'm not done with my first playthrough yet, so maybe I should just shut my n00b mouf, but two things come to mind:

1) How you approach a particular encounter can make the difference between getting wiped out in 20 seconds and a battle suddenly becoming a cakewalk. From my (limited) experience, it's not so much about what spells and abilities to use when, but about who goes where, which enemies to take out first and which character to control manually. I'm playing as a mage at the moment, but I've found that the melee-based characters have an annoying tendency to get killed no matter how I set up their tactics, so in the more difficult encounters, the solution has often been to let my mage play heavy artillery and control Alistair manually to draw attention away from the mage(s). That way Alistair stays alive longer, and that often makes the difference.

2) Lost in Dreams sucks. I will never understand how such a dull and tedious quest found its way into the same game that features something like Orzammar. The Fade is a cool idea in theory, but what they did with it... blech. At least the companions' individual nightmares are good, especially Morrigan's.

3) If you don't like having to pause, think and plan, then yes, this may not be the game for you.

Uh, did I mention I can't count?

I'd never played an RPG before i played DA:O and never knew what to expect. I didn't really know how to play these kinda games so at first i sort of fumbled my way through the intro story and into the main game then got stuck getting killed every two minutes it can be disheartening when you get guys online bragging how they find it easy on nightmare and post videos of them killing bosses easily on youtube.

The Fade drove me crazy i died and died on that since it was one of the first quests i did the whole circle tower was horrible and that damn Sloth Demon killed me tons. But now i can clear the quest and do the boss easily. It takes practice and perseverence. Ask other players you know for helpfull tips on how to use abilities spells and traps etc and how to spec your character what items and armor are best etc. You'll find when you get into it it's fun to experiment with what works and what tactics to use on your tactics screen. It's not fun when you find a game hard and get killed all the time.

But i find it's loads of fun to slowly get better at a game and keep trying then i feel an achievement when i see results.

Keep at it and don't be afraid to ask other players for advice.

I prerfer normal, but I can only see playing it with Morrigan, Wynne, alistair/Shale(tank) and myself as a mage throughout the whole game (my first playthrough).  With the sheer number of enemies and the fact that they don't die quick enough, a party that can't provide crowd control and damage would seem impossible.

I don't get it.  How do people play the game as a rogue or warrior(not as the tank)  on anything but easy?  Sten, Leliana, dog, etc. were all pretty useless on normal and up.  Chugging a potion every 5 seconds?  Damn, that's alot of potions.  And a great way to feel like you are completely unbadass and no better than any other random soldier out there.  Anyone can chug potions all day to compensate for their weakness, might as well make everybody a Grey Warden then.

Ah yes I remeber when I first started playing and I went into the fade. For me It felt like I had hit a brick wall. I got bored and then just stopped playing for a month or so.

The thing is that the fade seems to trick people up because theres no real sense of direction in the level. I would suggest looking at a wiki for the answers, thats what I did to get past it faster.

I liked the Fade. Playing as a mage I was alittle pissed that the shape changing abilities didn't carry over to the Fade mission in Redcliffe assuming you saved Connor.

The Deep Roads, and Orzammar in general, kinda dragged on for longer than I would have preferred.

Mass Effect is a story heavy shooter, or an Action RPG with an extra big ACTION.

Dragon Age is a true hardcore roleplaying game.

Just because they are from the same company doesnt mean they are the same kind of game.

And the fade is really hard, I keep dying there too. Thats also what makes it the most fun part of the game, to be honest. You really get some challenges there.

Hu ???

Um ... no.

When I reached the final part, I was all "What the hell ? WHERE is the dungeon ???"

It all felt like intoduction up to that point. And then BANG you're already at the place.

Edit: Typo fix

I actually find the Deep Roads more annoying than the Fade and would happily skip THAT part on my next playthrough.

If you keep dying too often, lower the difficulty. You can raise it again when you feel you survive too often. :D

The Deep Roads and Fade were annoying for me in two different ways. The Fade you do solo and i wasn't so great at the game the first time i did it so i got slaughtered now itr's easier just anoying doing everything alone. The Deep Roads just drags on and on it was like one long snorefest after a while i started to really lose interest playing that. But i already use the skip the Fade mod because i can't be bothered to spend so much time on that puzzle so i can't skip the deep roads too or that'd be skipping the bulk of the game lol.

Orzammer
Proving
Jarvia's Hideout
Caradin's Cross
An optional thiag
Some other thiag
Another one
Then the Anvil place
Finally, crown a damn king for Christ's sake
Shale's thiag
And it's all the same damn boring rock.

It still all felt like I was still on the way to reach the REAL place.

Where the real place was just like 3 puzzles.

And then there was already the final battle.

The wizard tower had the right length - the dwarves and the elves are too short, in my opinion.
