I'm not done with my first playthrough yet, so maybe I should just shut my n00b mouf, but two things come to mind:
1) How you approach a particular encounter can make the difference between getting wiped out in 20 seconds and a battle suddenly becoming a cakewalk. From my (limited) experience, it's not so much about what spells and abilities to use when, but about who goes where, which enemies to take out first and which character to control manually. I'm playing as a mage at the moment, but I've found that the melee-based characters have an annoying tendency to get killed no matter how I set up their tactics, so in the more difficult encounters, the solution has often been to let my mage play heavy artillery and control Alistair manually to draw attention away from the mage(s). That way Alistair stays alive longer, and that often makes the difference.
2) Lost in Dreams sucks. I will never understand how such a dull and tedious quest found its way into the same game that features something like Orzammar. The Fade is a cool idea in theory, but what they did with it... blech. At least the companions' individual nightmares are good, especially Morrigan's.
3) If you don't like having to pause, think and plan, then yes, this may not be the game for you.
Uh, did I mention I can't count?
