Jacob and Miranda didn't seem like they really "belonged" to Cerberus, espeically Jacob. He just seemed like too nice a guy. He was
PISSED in his loyalty mission about his dad being evil.

Kelly Chambers seems like she doesn't fit with
Cerberus either. In fact, most of the crew doesn't seem like the
Cerberus type. I guess none of them really talk about the
assassinations and experiements though so you don't know whether they
support or even believe that stuff. Just from talking to them they seem like they've joined Cerberus out of ignorance and/or misplaced idealism.

My personal loony theory is that TIM was "cleaning house" by stacking the Normandy crew with those who weren't "true believers" or in the case of Miranda, her feud with her father was probably making her more trouble than she was worth.

That, along with recruiting a bunch of potentially powerful and troublesome aliens, an insanely violent biotic that hates Cerberus, two criminals who have crossed Cerberus before, make me think TIM was hoing for a bloodbath, where Shep and the Collectors would destroy each other. OR weaken each other to the point that Cerberus could finish the job.

I pretty much assumed TIM picked the best and nicest to crew the Normandy to present the prettiest face to Shepard.

But then, I'm paranoid. As soon as I met Kelly I wanted to shout, "This isn't going to work, Illusive Man! Giving me a gushy 'I love aliens' yeoman to win approval points! I see your plan!"

TIM isn't (that) stupid. He knows that sticking a bunch of xenophobic lunatics on a sensitive mission that involves a lot of alien experts would end in disaster immediately. He most likely handpicked the crew of the Normandy because they play well with others.

Not, it should be added, that being able to play well with others makes them unsuited for Cerberus.

Any good organization should do its best to put everyone to best use. Xenophobes here, xenophiles there, whatever works for the betterment of humanity. It's your willingness and ableness to work, not your motivation, that matters.

Talking with the two engineers shows what I think has happened with most of the crew, they're all people who were recruited with promises of working with Shepard the big-god-damn-hero and saving people from the  collectors.
They're not the same as your usual cerberus agent that you see in missions, they're not the xenophobes you see working for cerberus in the novels, they're not the sociopaths they usually hire who have no problem dropping thresher maws on human colonists and alliance crews. They've got Miranda there to keep everyone in line, TiM just didn't count on Shep being charismatic enough to sway her loyalty, the rest of the crew are poor shmucks who ate up TiMs recruitment lines hook line and sinker, especially after being disillusioned with the Alliance
But I think this was more a ploy to get Shepard working happily with Cerberus and forget the terrible stuff the rest of the secret org does, it worked wonders on all the players who are like 'Hey Cerberus aint so bad!'

not all cerberus employees know about the experiments that Cerberus has done/is doing.

the only way you find out is via overlord, or by talking to EDI after the collector attack on the Normandy. EDI states that Cerberus operates in isolated cells.

Well that and pwn'ing them in ME1 gives you an idea too.

According to the Codex, some believe that Cerberus changed leadership and structure between ME1 and ME2. Maybe they got rid of all the xenophobes. Plus there are several different branches. Our branch may be the least extreme while there are more extreme ones (Like Pragia and Overlord)

They didn't get rid of the xenophobes, just read a few paragraphs from the POV of the Cerberus assassin in the latest novel, ugh I hated that guy. Maybe we can get some DLC where we can kill him or crazy renegades might want to recruit him.

Yeah, you people are probably right about the Illusive Man handpicking the crew. When Chambers was talking to me about loving all the aliens the first time I talked to her I thought "brainwashed.."

ReiSilver, I think what you're saying is spot on, most of them were disillusioned with the Alliance and joined Cerberus out of ignorance or because they wanted to server under Shepard.

There were times where Cerberus tricked me or at least convinced me they weren't as bad. One in particular is when Illusive man says he shut down Jack's biotic cell before the riot. Although, that doesn't necessarily mean he shut it down immediately after he knew what they were doing...

I wish they would have done a bit more about is Cerberus bad/is Cerberus good stuff in the game, would've been interesting. I know they did some with the Illusive Man baiting you those couple of times.

I really want to read the novels now that I've played ME1 and ME2... Are they pretty good? Better than the games?

The novels are...mediocre. Don't expect much out of them and I guess you'll enjoy them.

they're ok, very good for an ME universe fix if you need it and gives you some more insight into some characters like Anderson and TiM

That's why they got booted to your ship precisely because they weren't Cerberus material. Jacob does seem nice him signing up with Cerberus to me at least seems like a blip in his career. Later he'll be looking for a job and his interviewer will be like, " I see you worked for Cerberus...thats quite a blip on an otherwise fine career." Miranda was assigned to protect and or keep Shepard alive however you want to think of it. All the happy clueless Cerberus and Miranda loyalist made me paranoid I was really happy to have alien crewmen on my ship at least I know they weren't drawing extra paychecks to spy on me.

Well, TIM mentions that Jacob never trusted him though I don't think he ever saw Miranda thinking of betraying him. The rest of the crew are ex-Alliance and were most likely handpicked because TIM wants Shepard focused on the Collectors and not digging through his experiments behind his back. Such as when Shepard destroys many Cerberus cells in ME1 after discovering the truth. Kelly Chambers just screams being placed on the crew to force an untrue image about Cerberus for Shepard in an attempt to the play "We aren't all bad! See, we have an alien lover! Ignore the fact that she's young, beautiful, will sleep with you, and has never had a hand in any of our experiments!" card. Which seems to work considering that Renegades are fine with giving TIM what he wants and when he wants it.

The way TIM is more concerned with the Normandy in the bad ending lends a little to that theory.

I can't speak for Revelation (as I haven't read it) but I liked Ascension, and Retribution was pretty good.

As to the Cerberus crew not seeming like Cerberus it's because they're not really, with exception perhaps of Miranda. But even she is more cautious and levelheaded than most Cerberus scientists (which is probably why the Lazarus Project was a sucess). I'm guessing that TIM handpicked them like Nightwriter said to put a pretty less zealous face on Cerberus, but also to put Shepard at ease about pretty much being forced to work with Cerberus. Like after Garrus' recruiment mission it says pretty much the same thing about the revelation of Archangel as Garrus Vakarian would be useful at putting Shepard as ease on the Normandy SR2. This is also why Joker is your pilot (even though he is the best, and that's enough for Cerberus to have him flying the ship).

In a way. TIM doesn't care about the crew and only desires technology to further his ambitions.

Though it's ironic how Cerberus has you use Aliens to save humans. Yet if it was an alien species being abducted he would have ignored it unless he saw a chance to get technology.

They don't strike me as completely incompetent stark-raving lunatics either, yet, there they are, part of Cerberus.

I seem to lack that part of the brain that makes these conversations possible...

The Cerberus crew is nice because Cerberus is suddenly nice in ME2. Sure, their methods are flawed (or so they keep saying) but their heart is at the right place. That's why Cerberus is full of people like Kelly ("i love aliens! but i still fight for human rights if needed!"), Rupert ("proud to be here because we get things done!") or others that work there as if Cerberus was just another company like Ken and Gabby ("The Alliance was acting weird so we migrated to the next best thing!").

We only have our problems with the whole situation if we played ME1 and try to match our experience with what we see in ME2.

My point is: they created a new version of Cerberus for the game and added a few dialogs, especially in the beginning of the game, to smooth things over a bit. Why they did that, who the heck knows. But anyway, i recommend taking things as they are not trying to create consistency with the ME1 universe and make up complex theories that justify why things don't fit anymore.

Pretty much.  It's the only way I can possibly resolve ME 1's  "kill anyone who looks at us funny" Cerberus with ME 2's "kinder, gentler" Cerberus

The alternative is to simply "go with it" which I simply can't do.   I need continuity between chapters!

Why is there this assumption that everybody working for Cerberus is some evil maniac? Indeed you get those sorts, the types running that Subject Zero experiment, but look at the rank and file on the Normandy.

It just seems like TIM has a bad habit of selecting mad scientists to run his side projects.

I was under the assumption that TIM specifically handpicked the SR2 crew not for their devotion to Cerberus ideology, but for their disarming personalities and ideals. It wouldn't make much since for TIM to place a large number of xenophobes on the SR2 (not only could it potentially complicate the mission, but it could also "scare off" Shepard as well).

The crew was there to show Shepard that Cerberus are not the "bad guys".

Agree with Skorpious. Also, you need team players on a vessel like the Normandy, since it won't run if everyone's bickering about ideologies and stabbing each other in the back. Plus, "fight the bad guys" caters to an entirely different crowd than "turn orphans into super-soldiers." And remember, most people aboard the Normandy have never seen or heard of the darker side of Cerberus. Like ReiSilver said, they may have fallen for recruitment propaganda.
