Hello all.  I am preparing to play through the game on Nightmare.  I want this playthrough to be the one where I do all of the sidequests, find all the loot, and beat all of the optional bosses and whatnot.  My plan was to go with Sten as a dps monster, Shale as a tank with Stoneheart, Zevran for some more dps, and my mage PC (who will go sprirt healer/blood magic).  My question is what specializations I should choose at lvl 14 for Sten and Zevran.  I am going Berserker with Sten at lvl 7 and obviously Zevran starts with Assassin.

For Sten, my choice is between Reaver and Champion.  I haven't used either specialization extensively in my Hard playthrough, so I am not sure what to choose.  On paper, the Reaver's coprse heal skill seems useful for certain fights, he gets an extra stun with Frightening Appearance, and Blood Frenzy could be useful in certain situations to up his dps in emergencies.  The Champion, on the other hand, has a group buff skill that would help Sten, Shale, and Zevran (because it ups both attack and defense), as well as an AOE knockdown, which is never a bad thing.

For Zevran, I am considering Duelist and Ranger.  Originally, Duelist seemed like the way to go for the DPS and defense increases.  But I am using Leliana on Hard currently, picked Ranger on a whim, and have found the pets to be stronger then I expected.  Of course, I have Leliana in more of a support role then Zevran would be in, but I can't imagine an extra meatshield wouldn't be useful in Nightmare.

Short version:
Reaver or Champion for Sten?
Ranger or Duelist for Zevran?

If anyone has any thoughts on the specialization choices, they would be greatly appreciated.  Any advice from playres who have experienced Nightmare difficulty would be particularly helpful, but all opinions are welcome.  Thanks in advance.

Once you have Warcry fully upped, the cooldown on that knockdown is absurdly quick. Although it'll be less useful on bosses. Not much experience with Reaver.

As for Ranger and Duelist, well, it'll really depend how you see the fights going overall. While Ranger does not provide an actual bonus through talents, the Tier 4 animals are ridiculously useful in any situation considering their abilities. Duelist, eh, it was never really my cup of tea, i never saw reason to pick it over ranger, the pet was just too useful in the long run. Even if it dies, you can summon one of the other two on the spot(provided you have enough stamina)

Thanks for your reply.  I kind of agree with your intuition about Ranger.  It is so helpful on Hard, so I think on Nightmare it still will be.  Your info on War Cry is helpful too.

I practically soloed the last battle of the game as a hunter , but then failed when like 40 minions were released to attack me

Hunter is very good especially if you use the spider it uses webs and stuff to disable the opponents which is helpful

Its also very helpful for solo combat if it comes down to everyone in the party being dead besides the rogue
