Here's why.

The entire experience of Mass Effect, the first game, is summed up by its credits song, M4 Part II.  It just fits the whole spirit and story of the game so well.  Right down to the shades of blue.

Mass Effect 2, on the other hand, cannot be summed up by M4 Part II.  The story is darker.  The spirit is grimmer.  The music is more brazen.  The essence of the game is different than the first, blatantly in some regards, subtly in others.  It is this shift that makes Mass Effect 2 incompatible with M4 Pt II.

Hatred or disappointment for Mass Effect 2 from Mass Effect 1 fans has nothing to do with quality, at least on the narrative side.  It's undeniable that the writing and characterization in ME2 is just as good as it was in ME1, if not better.  This intangible shift in spirit "turned off" some ME1 fans.  Others took in in stride, seeing Mass Effect as none the worse for it, many seeing it as an improvement.  This is also why people on both sides of the argument can't quite understand why the other hates/likes ME2 so much.

So, yeah.  This randomly came to me while listening to M4 Part II.  Aweome song.

I like ME1 and ME2 equally. I also like ambient rock just as much as like epic orchestral scores. You may be right! :o

This and no Hanar to talk to in ME2.

Strange how BioWare missed that, they could have prevented a lot of rage in this forum here :(

There's a lot of little things I miss from ME1. Not game breaking, I just miss having them.

I liked the story of both, I just didn't like all of ME2's new gameplay mechanics.

It's not the art direction that they don't like, it's the loss of the precioussssssss old-school RPG elements.

ME2 is the interlude between ME1 and ME3 and its great. the story is as good as ME1 and gameplay is much better. and you have much Role Playing options than ME1 actually

I'm an avid fan of Mass Effect, and love 1 & 2 equally, but i can assure you the ME2 haters do not dislike it because of a song, lol. Along with with other things that are completely subjective, most have a problem with the plot, and how the game was about a bunch of random recruitment and loyalty missions that did not build off of eachother at all. Thats pretty much my main gripe with ME2, and i assume that is the main problem most have with the game.

No. Not at all.

It has been explained and discussed a lot why not just "some" Mass Effect fans are dissappoint(ed) with the direction of the sequel. The credits song is a of microscopic importance for that matter.

This. Game was supposed to be about characters, but in the end they felt like fillers. DA:O was more about characters, when you could lose them, because they didnt like your character and so on. Also there were much more conversations between characters. In ME 2 you didn´t need to bother with them after you recruited them. Hell, you didn´t even NEED to recruit most of them.

Also many people liked the atmoshpere of first ME which was more darker than actual "darker sequel".

And here I was thinking I'm the only one who picked up on that.

All M4 did was just catch my attention long enough to care about credits rolling.
What I didn't like indeed about ME2 is how everything felt like "WTF?" Sure, I got used to it after forcing this bite through my throat, but... come on... what the hell just happened? And what the hell is this? And... this?

No time to think about all of it, even. All you do is move from one WTF to the other. At least, I could think over these things while relaxing in my comfy Mako driver seat in ME1. But in ME2... neuh-neuh... ugh-ugh... I have to pay my frackin attention to the planet scanner and actually direct the Normandy during the time that had to be a pause to get the thoughts straight. If there is anything to think about, that is.

You can see that I despise gameplay. And I didn't buy it for the reason of having it, nor did it leave the starting impression as if ME is designed to include such in the first place.

TL;DR: Sharp direction change.

This far (I still havent finished ME2) I think ME2 is better than ME1 in almost every aspect. And that being said, I consider ME to be the best Xbox 360 game ever (maybe tied with DA:O) only beaten by ME2.

I think a lot of people liked the little slower pace of ME1 though and the longer main story missions (Noveria and Feros especially are longer than most ME2 missions). I can miss that too, but IMO the positives of ME2 outweighs the negatives.

I like ME1 because it feels more open to be explored. ME2 was heavily instanced and felt claustrophobic in comparison. ME2 traded scale for increased fidelity. Now that I've seen both, I prefer having larger scale and open worlds than smaller, restricted high fidelity areas.

I liked the story of both games equally. The soundtracks as well. What I didn't like about ME2 was the dumb cover based healing system, the minimalist inventory system, and the inability to customize my squadmates' epquipment.

What do you mean by this?

btw this thread will soon get locked as there is already a disappointment with ME2 thread.

I mean that instead of just stocking up on medigel and tapping 'Y' when my health got low like I did in ME1, I have to disengage from battle and find some place to hide as soon as my shields go down in ME2.

;) Play a vanguard, you dont need cover much cos you heal yourself by using their signature skill

Also, you can use medi-gel when your shield goes down in ME2 as well - after a few upgrades, it will even recharge your shield when you use them.

Vanguard, the only class where you recharge your shields by slamming into the target.

Vanguard is the greatest thing ever made in the history of video games

It is like *any non-descript drug* minus the brain scarring that dulls the effects of repeated usage

Gears / Uncharted / COD / One of the other many games that now have this feature anyone? I for one didnt want ME2 to be more like these games. I wanted it to be more of the same stuff we got in ME1.
