The sales info all the sites and articles use all seems to come from NPD.

Here is the page for January 2010 you can flip through the rest.

http://vgsales.wikia...PD_January_2010

The software numbers are listed in units but I don't see any totals for the 360

Well BioWare has said its wants its future games to sell 10 million copies. Not sure what that means for DA2 or ME3 but thats what they want to do with their games. The article with that info is here .

I'll be pissed if that means the series will get streamlined to the max.

ME2 was not just critically acclaimed, but acclaimed by a majority of fans of the franchise. Not to mention the DLC which is continuing to make them money.

What gets me is that ME2 was released in January and has been $20 for a few months now, that kind of price drop within a year usually isn't a good sign.

Really? I just bought my copy of ME2 back in September and I paid $50 (and it was on sale).

I did get ME for about $15 but I found a used copy for sale.

EA has improved it's reputation over the years but many people still are very bitter about how EA closed down Westwood Studios and I fear that maybe they'll do the same to Bioware if their games don't sell well enough.

EA improved its reputation????
I really wouldn't say that after what they done to one of my favorite games... Sims 3 was messed up in more ways than I can ever imagine and loses much of its appeal for me compared to its predecessors.  And every expansion came with so many game breaking bugs it makes almost all beta MMO look bug free

Why people speculate something what people here have no clue about how it really is. I don't mean I know anything at all, but I'm sure no-one here as player knows anything about Biowares or EA's internal business. So, why speculate it?

Because people here like to bash Bioware and EA and hope they fail at every turn. These forums are doom and gloom central.

To get back to sales figures:

According to NPD Mass Effect 2 sold for the 360 (in the US)
572,000 units in January 2010,
246,000 units in February 2010,
After that it doesn't make the charts.

Based on other game totals it seems that whatever a game does in the U.S. is about the same as what it does outside the U.S.  So as far as I can tell it seems that ME2 probably sits somwhere above 2 million units but below 3 million.  That would not include PC sales.

@Phaedon - that number of 2 million is for units shipped to retailers, not actual purchases of ME2 at those stores.

The best numbers I've seen put them at;

Mass Effect 1 - 2.35 million units sold

Mass Effect 2 - 2.17 million units sold

According to the EA 4th Quarter and Fiscal Report - only 4 games have sold over 4 million units; Bad Company 2, FIFA10, Madden NFL 10 and Need for Speed: Shift whereas DAO has sold over 3 million as of Feb 2010.

According to Steam, Impluse and D2D DAO and ME1 are sellling the in the top 10 for this month.

So talking about sales numbers and ME2 financial success which directly would play into ME3 being released is 'doom and gloom'?

I read that (thanks!) but those numbers just don't seem very realistic though, ME is not Halo or CoD or even GTA4 which has 17mill units sold.

Those ME2 numbers seem to be in line with what NPD has too.

So, if ME2 has sold roughly what ME1 sold is that a success?  It certainly doesn't seem like many new shooter fans were brought on board with those numbers.  All of which brings me back to wondering whether ME3 will prove to be an even bigger attempt to bring in shooter fans or whether it will try to target the RPG genre more specifically or will continue to straddle some kind of middle ground.

I imagine that this target is why they retail price for Mass Effect 2 is 20-30 american dollars. They want to get the game out there, and in my mind it goes;

"Somebody is more likely to try out Mass Effect 2, a $20 game they know not much about, than (insert new, publicized game), a $60 dollar game they know nothing about, due to the economy. If they like it, they'll buy the sequel (as well as the current DLC, up to $30). If not, they won't. Either way we earn some money, greater win-lesser win"

That's pretty how it goes in my mind. I imagine they have faith in Mass Effect 2 to try that out, seeing that the game hasn't been out a year yet. Other companies have done it recently:
-The Forced Unleashed (1) was pushed and even bundled with another game for $20 near the launch date of the sequel
-Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was lowered last year to $20 before CoD6 was released, and CoD6 was just lowered by more than 20 dollars in response to CoD7 Black Ops being released soon.
-Fable 2 (and its DLC), which went on sale recently.

I'd call it a pretty good success, but I'm not a publisher. But EA did consider it successful enough to use it to point out in their 4th Quarter Financial as part of the reason for EA's success that quarter, so that should mean that even EA feels it was successful.

I hate to say it, but I think ME3 will continue the shooter route to an attempt to bring in more fans since RPG's are now seen as a niche sort of following (according to one article RPG players are 'hardcore' since 30 hours is apparently asking too much of gamers now, yeah, go figure that one...)

I think the fact that Mass Effect 2 failed to outsell it's predecessor indicates that it's a market failure. It's too bad because I think Mass Effect 2 is better than Mass Effect 1.

well the problem with the numbers is that none of them are complete since they only track x360 units sold and do not include PC sales which are not tracked at all. And I consider ME1 to be superior to ME2.

They won't tho. It's very hard for games to sell that much ,even some multiplayer games have toruble getting those numbers. That's a fact, and the only way that would happen is if Bioware turns there games into full fledged shooter/hack and slash with multi.

Oh god.....I probaly just gave them an idea, crap......

We gotta remember that Mass Effect 1 came out in 2007, and Mass Effect 2 came out 9 months ago. Mass Effect 1 still sells a lot on things like Steam. Also we don't know how many used copies were sold. Although they aren't counted formally, we can underpredict the sold used copies by how many people bought the Cerberus Network for $15, because they wouldn't have gotten it for free

Guys, as others have said, the game sold over two million IN THE FIRST WEEK. Since, it has sold even more, to be sure. For an RPG, this is pretty damn good.

In fact, when na interviewer was asking the creators of FF XIII about the success of ME2 (especially in Japan, surprisingly enough) they got very nervous, asked what Mass Effect was and why people liked it so much, Leave it to JRPG developers to not know the slightest thing about what western RPG makers are doing.

No, ME2 did not sell 2 million units the first week. 1.6 mill were sold within the first 10 weeks. They sold 2 million units to retailers, the actual count of units sold is presently 2.1mill.

Looking at the month to month sales of games in general, releasing in January didn't help - it was a bad month even for a January.

I still don't really understand why this game failed to make an impact on shooter fans though. I must know about 20 shooter/gamers that are aware of this game, know that it has great reviews, think it looks pretty cool when they see it on Youtube, but have yet to actually play it.

Sales of video games are pretty negligible after 6 months of release - it's not like this game is going to sell another 2 million units in the next year or 2 - so comparing sales to the first game at this point is pretty fair.

The point is, if someone buys ME2, then finds out that they will get more out of the game if they buy ME, they will then go buy ME, that increases ME sales too. So really, if that happens a lot, then ME2 will never out sell ME.
