Is Sten worth having in my group?

Hey

I was thinking of having Sten in my current playthrough, to find out more about his background. But is he worth having in my group? It's because I have read on forums that he is boring and negative.

My dilemma is, that I would like to have Alistair and Morrigan to argue constantly, but I would also love to have Zevran with me. I just don't feel like replaying this game for the third time.

Also what confuses me is, that I don't know where and when in the game there might be conversations between characters that are triggered by importand quest plots, etc.

Any Dragon Age can please shed some light on this?

P.S. I see that this topic suddenly asks about more than just Sten, but I would appreciate both answers: on Sten and on: where and when in the game I can expect characters arguing or praising each other :)

Sten is so worth having! He's a really serious character and can be a bit straight forward and yes, sometimes negative, but he's worth it. Just make sure you have high persuasion and you can easily persuade him not to disapprove of certain things. If you can't seem to get hsi approval up, look into gifts. Make sure when you talk to him you aren't accusatory, but understanding. I've called his character out on bad things he's done, etc, and still gotten approval it's about how you do it. Don't put the Qun down or the Qunari, be inquisitive, not spiteful. If you don't agree with him, you don't have to, but don't put him down to prove your own ideas.

Also, conversations I've noticed are triggered when you first run into the mages tower, pass the main doors and that area always triggers conversation. Take Wynne and Sten to get a unique dialogue with him.

Toward the provings always triggers conversation for me, also the docks in Haven, as well as leaving the chantry in Redcliffe. Make sure Sten is with you in those areas to get his unique dialogue, also, make sure to take him to Denerim the first time you go or you'll miss out on his discussion of Qunari culture.

Sten is the hardest nut to crack which makes his dialogue all the richer. You really have to listen, because once the floodgates open, he talks and talks. My PC and I both stood with mouth agape the first time I got his "secret dialogues." Oh, and then he'll fall silent, and you think, "hmm, this conversation is going really badly" and then it's boom, Sten Approves +50 or something crazy like that.

It's worth it because it's a challenge. Also his views on things are really interesting. On the one hand he is a military pragmatist, but the Qun also makes him idealistic and inflexible on certain points. At least until you earn his respect and he starts to consider things differently. And then, "kadan"... *melts*

You can check the wiki for the 'correct' conversational choices or just wing it. Sten tends towards pragmatism and he has difficulty with speaking your language. If you keep your responses short and sympathetic then he will gain confidence in you and begin to speak more freely.

My personal favourite Sten banter is at the docks at Lake Calenhad. If he's in your party when you chat up Carrol to get across the lake he says some priceless lines.

Sten has a very dry sense of humour but he's hilarious.

The two handed warrior spec starts out quite weak but ends up excellent (spec him to use Indomitable) - but really, the reason to have him along is for his banters.

Yeah one of the things you need to make sure with Sten/Oghren when you first get their tactics is to switch them to use Indomitable or they die really quickly.

You don't actually have to be terribly sympathetic.  My female mage PC (who found him very irritating) got some surprising approval bumps.  Sometimes he seems to like it when you tell him to stuff it.

Yes, both Sten and Shale will sometimes react negatively if you try to flatter them. Sneaky! I have found that when he confronts you in Haven, the shirtier you are with him the higher the approval. In some of the secret dialogues, he likes if you explain things about Ferelden. I would guess this helps him in his mission.

Don't forget to bring him to the Lake Calenhad docks the first time you go...

If you want to focus on Sten in a playthrough, it would be a good idea to play a warden would would understand him. Maybe a very stoic and serious Warden with a strong sense of duty who impersonalizes the decisions he or she makes... choosing the swiftest most decisive actions even if they might seem cold and callous to others. I have not tried it yet, but thusfar I'm getting the impression that this is what it takes to get Sten on your side without metagaming and bribing him with gifts.

For example, Sten approves of killing Connor, and will tell you you are not as callow as he thought. He tends to strongly dissaprove of acts of soft hearted idealism.

Haven't heard many Sten/Morrigan ones... but Sten/Leliana is epic. "Soooftie!" "...I am not."

Also, Sten's dialogue operates in a fairly unique way. As well as background banter at certain trigger points, and extra dialogue lines when his approval crosses certain thresholds, Sten also makes off-hand remarks when you can ask him to elaborate on later. It's the 'I wanted to ask you about something you mentioned...' line. If you have him with you when you visit certain locations, more options will appear here.

Sten and Shale's banter had me grinning like an idiot. And when they aren't funny, you get a good bit of information on qunari society.
