I wanted to see if anyone else felt the way I do. I find Xzar, the criminally insane necromancer, (not Montaron, he's boring and not very useful) to be the most interesting of all BG NPCs and keep him in the party, even when impractical, for the sake of his hilarious dialogue.

"Tell us a story, Monty! Something with bears and gold!"

"STOP TOUCHING ME!"

"The ones the Gods want to destroy they first make mad, MAD, MAHAHAHAHAAAAD!"

Has anyone ever kept him in their party for the entire game? There anything I should know or anywhere I should go that'll trigger something funny from Xzar? And how the Hell are you supposed to pronounce his name? "Ex-zar" is the way I say it. While I'm at it, how do you pronounce "Viconia"?

well I go, v eye cone E a
and zar!
I liked having him in my party but his wee friend was bloody useless. The red mage you pick up in Beregost (?) was also quite funny.

When you get to BG2 you'll find that both Xzar and Edwin are still around and being their evil selves.

Oh I'm quite aware Xzar and Ed are in BG2 and hilarious. I downloaded TDD purely to get Xzar in BG2. Ed is pretty funny too.

"I'm busy, okay? I'm busy!"

"Have you nothing else to do but BOTHER me?"

"Couldn't we have gotten some poor fools to do this for us? This is no place for a man of my stature."

Minsc's "dialogue" with his hamster is always inventively funny and his mage friend Dynaheir is fun to rescue and have along for input. I liked Garrick as well, although his tendency to run immediately at any sign of trouble was simultaneously funny and inconvenient, particularly when fighting wyvern ambushes. I vaguely recall some amusing argumentative banter between Jaheira and another female NPC, maybe on the topic of druidic magic vs wizardry. I think she argues with most everyone. Xan is funny at first, but eventually the depressed voiceset gets depressing, Shar-Teel is funny too but at least her story continues to be interesting. I think I recall Tiac's dialogue as funny too, albeit late in the game. Safana's sensual voice made her appealing without much story. Of the more serious NPCs I liked Coran, Kivan, and Ajantis. At this point I usually just kill the otherwise 1-dimensional evil Xzar and his chum in the woods where I find them and take their spells and potions, as well as the similarly uninteresting Edwin.

never been a fan of xzar. He is chaotic evil but he just sound like a crazy whiny **** in bg1

In bg2 he does look more like an actual chaotic evil character.

I did a quick run through Xzar's voiceset and know now why he wasn't interesting. His voice was too inconsistent. Was he supposed to be a cold, calculating evil guy or just insane? CE or CN? Many of the voice statements in the game are decisive, lots of off-the-cuff humor, but the Xzar ones were restrained. By contrast I love the Psychotic voiceset in Neverwinter Nights- clearly a lunatic and funny to hear in-game, especially by someone who can roleplay the character. (I never did...) As a BG contrast I'd say Garrick's quixotic bursts of behavior and poetry were much more consistent and thought-out, thus more interesting. Just my opinion...
