Why? Because Bioware decided to broaden their horizon and try new concepts? Besides, it's a given that ME3 will resume Shepard's story and continue to function in a similar manner to previous ME games; the inclusion of a spin-off will likely have little impact on ME3's overall production.
Obviously there was a miscommunication. Here are my positions stated more clearly:
Mass Effect is awesome. Expanding it beyond the trilogy is a great idea. Changing up the gameplay for the other games outside of the trilogy (rts, mmo, etc) is a great idea.
Cloning Call of Duty and giving it a Mass Effect wrapper (which was my interpretation of the article) is downright insane.
If the article was not implying that and I misread, than I am completely content with a multiplayer mass effect game. However, if a "we can too!" multiplayer game is being created, than I am disappointed.
I understand a separate studio is developing this title and that it will not effect ME3.
EDIT: Quoted myself from earlier.

I think BioWare has shown that they have a
unique approach to creating games. They've never gone for sales; if
they had, they could hop on the proverbial bandwagon and make a
stereotypical modern day shooter with a heavy focus on multiplayer.
Hell, it’s what Medal of Honor did. The game was forgettable but still
managed to sell well.
I think its BioWare's integrity to making
great games that would create a worthwhile and worthy multiplayer
feature. There are still games where the multiplayer feels fresh, and I
think that a developer like BioWare would offer an interesting take on a
game with several players involved. For example, look what they're
doing with The Old Republic. They're turning a genre that I always
thought of as stale into a comprehensive multiplayer experience.
So
while I don't blame you for having distaste for multiplayer, I wouldn't
knock it all together until we've seen what BioWare has to offer.
