Crash after unlocking Hardcore

Core 2 duo, 2 Gb ram, win XP pro SP3
PC version, with bring down the sky update.

2 screens, an LCD LG192WS on Nvidia PX8400 primary
Secondary AOpen CRT on Intel G33/G31 on-board.

I played through once all the way through and unlocked hardcore difficulty without a hitch.

I started a new char on hardcore, and it now crashes routinely, seemingly during conversations. I can see it happen because the second core runs at 100%, while the first normally sits at about 60%. When it crashes the first core goes to 100% too. It also doesn't clean up memory properly, there's about 150Mb extra in use after crashing. You can't restart the game without rebooting.

The last one crashed the LCD screen so my primary was the CRT, I had to reset it in win display properties. Let me reconfigure my ME display settings and see if it helps.

I dug up a ruler and measured both screens, the CRT is a classic 4:3 set to 800x600, no worries there.



The LCD is 16:10, but I had it set to 1024x768 in both windows and mass effect. The fonts looked OK, the font size was good, and moving a window from one screen to the other kept roughly the same size, so I had been happy.



I now experimented further, 960x600 gave really bad font distortion in windows, so I settled on 1280x800, although it's a bit smaller than I prefer on such a crap screen.



960x600 works OK in ME, text doesn't look great, but at least the game's running a lot better. I'll give 1280x800 a try now.
