Because I want to, and because the option is there.

If you need it broken down to a very basic level: If I'm going to look at an arse for 20hrs+, I would rather it the arse of a rather attractive female than a guy.

Because if i'm gonna spend 100+ hours staring at someone's behind, better be a female one

Oddly enough, that's why I made a Human Noble male

Then I met Zevran, and now all I want to play are squishy little mages that he can sweep into his Deft Hands.... <3<3<3  <3<3<3

I pick both male and female characters because it's boring as hell picking the same thing every time. Not to mention to get all the possible romances etc you need to play as both male and female, but when it comes right down to it, why not?

I paid for the whole game, so I'd like to eventually experience most of it.  Only playing one sex is somewhat similar to only playing one class, race, or "alignment" and this means missing out on certain conversations and sub-plots.

The City Elf:Female does happen to be the best orgin story out of them all though.(just my opinion)
I belive its the only orgin that plays diffrent based on male/female.

This.

I love this origin. It was the first one I ever played and it is still my favorite (though I do like the human noble one as well).

Anyway. I'm a girl and I've made male characters before. Its different. Mixes things up a little bit. I would imagine guys who play a female character may feel the same way (or, you know, they might just want to stare at an attractive female instead of a male).

Interesting topic ;)

Some responders obviously like to roleplay someone different from themselves.

Some players like to imagine themselves in that role and build characters around themselves

And some are watching someone else's ass :P

Have fun, however you play. :)

I'll add that I always alternate male/female sexes in games that allow them (and when I replay) because it can offer everything from the simple cosmetic difference (looks) to changes in how the game plays (dialogue, reaction, quests, etc). In DA:O, it's both.

In terms of gender, however, I guess you can say that DA:O also allows you to play both genders regardless of which sex you choose, but that's mainly evident in the romances and little else.

Why not? Why would anybody play an elf or a dwarf for that matter, unless they are pointy eared or very short in real life? Roleplaying is about taking on the role of somebody else. Why restrict yourself to only trying on personas that are your own sex?

I don't know maybe I just find it hard to get off on Health bars and bad ass looking men.

I love playing a female just like I am one my self but each gender has difference in the DA Story like for instance the City Elf story! I do play Males I did for story and romances but I still think Alistair needs me he is funny and caring and well hes got everything I like in a guy Bio made him and the voice actor made him sooo life like its hard not to love him! Anyways enough with that rant... you can pick what ever you wanna if you don't want to be a female thats your chose you will miss out on how the world acts around you when you play a female!

I played a female to get a different feel of the game once I completed the original story with my main character. I am someone who always will create a male as my MAIN character because that character is a representation of myself in a fantasy game. That is how my logic runs is self imaging in an alternate and more exciting universe.

However, if at all I played a female, which I did so as a Dalish Elf, it was due to a little change in scenery. That and I wanted to see what Alistair would do if I decided to romance him.

Usually in CRPG's, I tend to play males only, as I do not RP females as well as I would like. But in DAO, the subtle insights are already there. And the varied motivations are worth exploring, like City Elf is much better when played as a female, IMO.

First play through was male, but I sort of screwed him up in Awakening. I then decided to make a female Warden to correct all that, and take a different approach when romancing Leliana. I've never played as a female lead character before, so I thought I'd see what it's like. It's not too much different from playing as a male. Hell, as a guy I bonded better with my female mage than my male mage!

It really helps that there is absolute no difference in strength or features just because your gender is different. It's true gender neutral.

I play as both female and male characters in RPG's to explore the variety of options.

its funny that you brought this up, ive always thought exactly the same. i am a bit of a wet rag though, i invariably pick the male warrior every rpg i play and am always a paragon of virtue. I am also a big fan of the 'rags to riches' scenario where you rise from the ranks of mediocrity to aweinspiring famous hero. I tend to make my character look a bit weird if facial editing is possible, i give them fairly unattractive but distinct faces. Oh, and i always set out to utterly smite my enemies, but should they ask for mercy, i am almost always compelled to spare their life ( who knows they might even join you).

No pretty boys thank you very much!

Depends on RPG and role i play in it. In a game like Morrowing or Oblivion i dont really care what gender, since there are next to none differences in gameplay.

In generell I prefer to look at a female ass though. :P

Dunno. For the different content, for the roleplaying, for LOLVAGINA.

Personally, I don't do female playthroughs very often. When I do, I do them for variety's sake and to have a different RP experience.

Why do people keep flooding this forum with pointless threads?

We're so glad to know you're so very secure of your own gender.

This.  Usually I play both male and female in Bioware games, but for some reason, haven't gotten into a DA male playthrough yet.

I'm the exact opposite when I play, I usually go the evil mage route, and instead of being virtuous, I usually end up being completely ruthless. I usually switch up the gender once in a while just to see the differences, and make a "good" character. That's what makes these types of games great though, no matter how you choose to play your character you can still get the same enjoyment as someone who plays completely different from you.

I always pick female characters, even if i'm not a "chick" myself. And for many reasons :

The look : When you play a game where you have to see the main character at every scenes for 50+ hours. It's better to choose a good looking one if you can. It means something who you like to look at. For me, mens did'nt enter this category AT ALL (). So the choice is quite easy...

The Roleplay : I'm a male since i was born, so i'm used to be a male. The roleplay idea is to be "someone or something different". At least, that's what i think. So, because i'm not a girl, it's a change to try to act as one.

The Hero : In movies, books, tv shows or whatever you want, action heroes are much of the time the typical "brown hair male with deep blue eyes and big muscles". It's quite boring. So, when you have the oportunity to save the world with a girl for a change, it's like a good thing for me.

The "arcade games syndrome" : In many consoles games, you have to pick between some premades characters. And most of the times, these premades have different statistics. Some are stronger, some are faster. And most of the time, the faster ones are girls characters. While prefering faster characters to slower but stronger, i take the habit to take girls characters, even if it's did'nt make any statistics change. :P

That's the main reasons why i play "chicks" in video games.

And sory for my bad english.
