It is probably easier for many girls to identify with a female character. On the other hand, many guys probably like having a beautiful female to watch for the duration of the game.

this :)

I've put hella amounts of time into crafting what I thought was a hawt warden only to jettison her cause i screw up with the makeup/blush/hair

I have no idea what it is but the lighting in the character creation section is different from the ENTIRE game. My Wardens look TOTALLY different when you actually play them.

...and now I think I may be overthinking this. :)

On my 1st playthru I'm usually a Male Dwarf Ftr (D&D charater I've had for 20 years) then on later plays I mix it up.
What I find is that I can easily make a female character that (I think) looks good, but when I try to create a male face, they end up as "too pretty" or utter cr*p...restart.
After a lot of effort I get one that I like... and for some reason, i mentally associate

tough Ftr=male... Image IPB

Rogue/thief=female... Image IPB

The "arcade games syndrome" : In many consoles games, you have to pick between some premades characters. And most of the times, these premades have different statistics. Some are stronger, some are faster. And most of the time, the faster ones are girls characters. While prefering faster characters to slower but stronger, i take the habit to take girls characters, even if it's did'nt make any statistics change. :P

Yeah thats why I think so many girls in the game are rouges and so many men are warriors.

Because Samus Aran is the baddest video game character ever and she's a girl. :)

Because girls are more fun to look at than guys.

Because girls have to be played smarter than men.

Because the world (real and fantasy) is more dangerous for women than men. It makes the odds harder to overcome.

Because in almost every other game, a man is the main character and it gets old.

Because of Samus Aran. :)

For me, it's this. Outside of RPGs females very very rarely are leads in games, that's why.

In addition to agreeing with all the previously posted reasons, I would like to lobby a question back at you.

Why does what other people choose to play as in their games bother you so much? Do you find anything wrong with playing a female in an RPG? The tone of your post seems to imply that you seem to think that playing as a female is inferior in some way.

i'll play a mage female just to ****** off sten, but i always play as a guy my first play through, because (in my opinion) thats the most important play through. it's when you don't know what's going to happen. and it's always the same for me on the that frist one., a human tank named Vice Revan. that is my alter ego in all my RPG both on the game consoles and and pen & paper. but coming on to 2nd or 3rd (and in DA's case 10th or 15th) i depend on what mood im in. witch go's back to the begging of this post. ether for comedy or whatever it's just for fun. there now that i got that out of the way. back to tormenting the NPC's. Mhahahahaah.

I really don't get it I mean I'm pretty sure female gamers play guys all the time in games like Modern Warfare or Grand Theft Auto. Its fun to play another sex.

Some guys like to have a female avatar. There are plenty of guys out there who probably don't want to always see some muscle bound guy going around in a loin cloth. I sure as heck don't. Example is Kratos from God of War.

Then you have people who are girls and like to play a female avatar. Then you have transexuals who identify with a female avatar if they were born as a male and believe to be the wrong gender. On the flip side where there are women who believe they are men and were born into the wrong gender might play a male avatar because they identify with that avatar more. There are so many different reasons out there in the world it's not funny. I just say accept it and move on. It's not like people are going to just up and play the gender they are in real life if they don't want to.

i normally don't, but i was curious how people would react in the game to a female vs a male character. i'm in my 6th time through the game, and this is my first time using a female. there's some subtle differences here and there. i'm not really interested in the romances, butit's still interesting at the very least. in a game where there is no impact based on gender i just use male.

I would never play as a chick in say an online game like World of Warcraft or any mmo or what not but...If its only single player...why the hell not?  Plus having a lesbian relationship with Lei is soooo worth it!

Granted I will only play as a chick if the game is worth it to replay which DA:O clearly is...And I wont ever choose a chick as my first char to play either

We give players the option to play as male or female, so it shouldn't be surprising that some players will choose to play male characters and some will choose to play female characters. It's not unusual or unexpected.

I normally play a majority of my characters against gender in RPGs, i.e. female.

Personally, I generally think that a heroine works better from a dramatic standpoint than a hero. There could of course be an issue of audience sympathy as well, as female characters in media in generally have (or are assumed to have) audience sympathy initially, whereas a male character would have to earn it somehow, thus sympathising with a female protagonist is easier
(http://tvtropes.org/...xpendableGender).

Then there are of course general aesthetic reasons, regarding character options, costume design and so on, and the somewhat trite "if I am going to stare at an ass for 30+ hours..." deal that always comes up when discussing this.

Finally, I suppose, as one of the main points of roleplaying could be seen as being able to be someone you aren't in real life, playing as a female certainly qualifies.

And if you are playing Mass Effect, the reason can probably be summed up with: Jennifer Hale.

Because its a RPG and in RPGs you play a character different to oneself. I'm playing a dwarven male noble warrior atm which is about as different to myself as I could get and if at the end of playing him I feel I've made decisions because they're the decisions he would've taken, not the ones I would if I were in his situation I'll be pleased.

Because it's an RPG, and I like to explore all aspects of a game if I play it through multiple times. With a game like Dragon Age that has such a high replay value (I'm currently on my fourth (and fifth) playthrough), I want to explore all the possibilities.

Also, I have it for the Xbox, so I wouldn't be able to get the achievement for romancing Alistair without playing through as a female.

Finally, the game is put together in a way that I feel a female Human Noble simply gets the best storyline.

Right, why would someone roleplay in a roleplaying game?
