I want to go through Dragon Age another time and I was just wondering what would happen if I go through the Sacred Ashes quest earlier in the game. I'm sure it can be done with mob scaling but is there a minimum level that you should be at before attempting the High Dragon fight?

Depends, straight out of Lothering to Denerim then Haven and the Temple, you'll probably be level 10ish. Most of the problems would probably come from the gear more then talent/spell options.

If I'm correct the High Dragon is at minimum level 15 (regardless of when you confront her) and maximum level 20. I'd say that you should at least be level 12 and stock up on warmth balms. The biggest problem as Liliandra noted would be your gear (anyone who gets grabbed is most certainly dead).

You can defeat the High Dragon on your own with decent fire resistance. There are ways (glitches) that prevents the dragon from coming close to you (it can only use ranged fire attacks). With some potions and a bow or staff (and patience; coz it will take a long time) it's easy.

If you want fight close with the High Dragon use Shale as tank (can't be grabbed), Leliana as range DPS'er, Wynne or another spirit healer who constantly cast regenation and heal on Shale and you can pretty much do whatever you want.

Spells like storm of the century can put serious harm to the High Dragon in time. (with a little preparation you don't even need to be at a high level).

The right group can do it as soon as you could get there:

Shale: large fire crystal, small nature crystal (clear or better), Stone Roar and Taunt
Wynne: healing, of course
Leliana: bows beat spells for damage, as the HD has a lot of magic reistance
You: Stay at range - bow, spells or just stand back and shout Go Team! Posted Image

If your tank is able to wear blood dragon armor or anything of similar quality, then they should be fine. During my recent playthrough, my party went to Redcliffe first, and fought the high dragon somewhere between level 12-15 without too much trouble. Just make sure the tank gets plenty of healing from the mage and have some sort of stun available if the tank gets grabbed. My party didn't have access to scattershot or cone of cold this playthrough, but force field did the trick nicely.

My party was Alistair, Sten, Morrigan and my rogue. Alistair was the tank, Morrigan cast healing spells, and Sten+my rogue used bows. Sten+my rogue didn't have any archery talents, so they were basically on auto attack the whole fight, so I controlled Morrigan and cast whatever heal spell was available. A few health poultices might have been used, but no lyrium potions or salves.
