I name my Mabaris after fallen squadmates from the Mass Effect games.

I actually picked my mage's name to with the dog's name rather than vice versa. I named her Annwn to go with naming the dog, Cwn. Other than that, I've just called it "Dog", parked him in camp, and told him to stay out of Morrigan's pack unless he wants to change his name to "Toad".
BTW, I love the Barkspawn name, too. Nice big LOL for that one.
