Did you use any of your army options before you fought the Archdemon?

After the first run, I almost never summon the armies at all, didn't for several runs including the last two which were on hard the whole game. Worse fighting is the courtyard of Fort Drakon though, mostly due to the party spreading out between the two dragon thralls and the swarming darkspawn from the door and they not focusing like I tell them to for more then two attacks before switching targets.

This is exactly what has happened to me.

I used the elf archers at the alienage and the dwarfs on top of Fort Drakon with special appearance by the Legion of the Dead. I let them have at it with the darkspawn while I use myself or another rogue on the ballista against the archdemon. I load up on poison bombs and then assign them to my companions to use in case they get overwhelmed in melee attack.

Because I am a control freak I would prefer just to handle the archdemon as much as possible by myself while the others play with the darkspawn. Those are the only two allies I use. I have tried the mages but I find them to be useless, they die easily and use the high powered spells that are not exactly friendly fire. I used them at the last battle before you get into fort drakon, boy that was a shameful slaughter. Never again.

Dwarfs at the market disctrict, elves at the alienage, Redcliffe Soldiers and the other elves at Fort Drakon, and the elves again against the archdemon.

I actually didn't use any armies for my first 2 or 3 playthroughs because I forgot to summon them. And then when I did (on my 3rd or 4th playthrough) they died really quickly because I didn't know about contributing to your allies via the supply crates in camp. Now, I contribute heavily to all parties (good for some extra levels). I summon the elves in the Alienage, Redcliffe soldiers at the Gates, the Palace district and the entrance to Fort Drakon, and the dwarves at the top of Fort Drakon. I've used the mages on the top of Fort Drakon also, but didn't find them as effective as I'd like. That may have been before I started contributing to the supply crates, though, so they might not be as squishy now.

"No. I tried calling them, but they never came." They generally appear where you first entered an area, so you often have to go back and get them or summon and then wait for them.
