Anyone else want to bet that this will be a far-back prequel to ME, entitled ME3, and the true third title will be entitled Mass Effect 4?

A  First Contact War based game would be fun or maybe the Blitz.  Perhaps it could just be another fully new story in teh ME universe as it is a BIG  universe afterall.  If it does turn out to be ME  related, will it be a standalone disk game or a massive DLC/Expansion for download.

Anybody think this could be a huge dlc and that is a customized Shepard and they are treating it like Rockstar treated episodes from liberty city

Maybe thats what Shanxi looked like after the Turians bombed it

Kotaku is reporting:

The BioWare project teased earlier today by Spike TV's Video Game Awards is not an early look at Mass Effect 3, according to a development source, but the multiplayer-focused Mass Effect spin-off currently in the works at BioWare Montreal.

If it's multiplayer, I could really care less.

I mean, EA having Bioware make a 'spin-off' shooter since they showed potential with ME2, so they can also cash in on the whole shooter genre and multiplayer play?

Regardless, if it's Mass Effect 3, or a new IP, I will be extremely excited. But it's going to be multiplayer focused with a poop campaign...meh...meh.

God please don't let it be anything like that trainwreck series call of duty..

CoD 1 was good, 2 was good but pretty similar, and after that they were the same cookie cutter game.. ugh..

Edit: "Finally, former Raven Software (Quake 4, Wolfenstein) lead designer Manveer Heir moved to BioWare Montreal this summer to work on Mass Effect, giving the developer some well-known multiplayer shooter talent."

great.. two of the most glitchy and boring multiplayer games working on the project Image IPB

It will probably be more like Gears of War then Call of Duty. I bet it will be a 3rd person shooter, not first person.

Just a tidbit for you all since I'm a big MMA fan, this is likely in response to the fact that EA lost 200 mil last quarter and their new franchise EA MMA only sold 45 000 copies in it's first month of sales. In comparison THQ's UFC 2009 sold over 1 mil in it's first month. (2010 sold about 413 000)

I think we can expect to see EA rely heavily on Bioware in the future if their other franchises continue like this.

Hm, I thought it would not have to do anything with ME at all.

I actually like the ide of BW making a shooter. Shooters are the perfect genre to tell a good story. Unfortunately, noone seems to want to do that. I think BW could do something spectacular in that regard, ME related or not.

I just hope the rumors about a multiplayer game turn put to be wrong. While I don't mind that being an option, I'd rather like a long and exciting SP campaign, whatever shape the game will have.

No worries, this does not replace ME3, nor does it distrupt ME3's development in any way. It's a different team, after all. We are getting our Shepard RPG no matter what. :)

This simply seems to be another game, of a different genre, set in the same universe. It's a great IP, and there is no harm in expanding it beyond the realm of RPGs.

I for one am eargerly awaiting a Mass Effect space sim. :)

Alright as long as they don't mess up anything in the story
it's perfect as it is
but in the long run if this turns out successful with casuals i fear that they might start focusing on mp

This being the First Contact War is an interesting idea and all, but I don't see it happening - BioWare loves making games that are open ended to allow the player the most options. Going in, we already know how the First Contact War 'happened.' Our choices could affect bits and pieces, but we'd be locked in to certain events - Shanxi would surrender and eventually the two sides accept a peace treaty. If we're given the option to refuse to surrender Shanxi or go off on a suicidal war against the turians, it wouldn't work into the overall story. I mean, they did a lot to make sure that there was no 'set' path for ME2, why offer us options that we know are going to be voided by what's official?

/IF/ the rumor is true, I think the knee-jerk reaction is to cry foul, worry that BW is selling out to the shooter crowd (or more than they are already if you already feel that way,) and pronounce the game horrible without even seeing it.

That was my knee-jerk reaction.

Then I got to thinking.

I have never been disappointed by a BW game. Ever.

I love single player games.

BW is making SWTOR, and while it's an MMO, they have found ways to bring what's great about SP RPGs into the mix.

In SWTOR, they made a group conversation system.

And then it hit me. Contrary to how most people play, shooters are not MP in a box. They have SP and co-op as well. I can see a shooter with tons of RPG elements in it, customization, a great story, and even MP dialogue should you play it co-op. I do not see a fatal sellout, rather, I see the possibility of a shooter that - gasp! - doesn't suck!

Why are people crying that this would be a CoD Clone? Even if this IS a multiplayer shooter, how can you jump to that conclusion? Think about it, the current battle system in ME is radically different from those games. Biotic powers, throwing fireballs and **** would add in some really cool dynamics to a shooter game. I can't see this as being in anyway close to CoD. Maybe similar to Halo if anything, but thats also pushing it.
