A) A Mass Effect prequel possibly set during the First Contact War.
C) A sequel/reimagining of Shattered Steel
D) A New IP
All from 3 seconds of footage. Gotta love Bioware fans
I personally think it's a new IP, but could also see some sort of ME game that is separate from the main trilogy. I don't think they'd be hyping an expansion like this with a major announcement. In terms of SS, Bioware seems more preoccupied with creating new IPs and universes than revisiting old ones.

/IF/ the rumor is true, I think the knee-jerk reaction is to cry foul, worry that BW is selling out to the shooter crowd (or more than they are already if you already feel that way,) and pronounce the game horrible without even seeing it.
That was my knee-jerk reaction.
Then I got to thinking.
I have never been disappointed by a BW game. Ever.
I love single player games.
BW is making SWTOR, and while it's an MMO, they have found ways to bring what's great about SP RPGs into the mix.
In SWTOR, they made a group conversation system.
And then it hit me. Contrary to how most people play, shooters are not MP in a box. They have SP and co-op as well. I can see a shooter with tons of RPG elements in it, customization, a great story, and even MP dialogue should you play it co-op. I do not see a fatal sellout, rather, I see the possibility of a shooter that - gasp! - doesn't suck!
Have you play any Battlefield game? or CoD game? or Unreal?
I am betting this game will be a mix of Halo: Reach, Battlefield, Call of Duty and Unreal. We'll see buyable armor suits/races, color options, 25 guns that are probably customizable to 4-6 attachments, clan tags and screaming 10 year olds.
There will also probably be classes like ME, or Battlefield, where you will have class specific abilities to level up and unlock..
how original..
I can't imagine this game being anything up to par with ME or DA..

Actually I've been leaning towards the Awakening-Type expansion. It would explain why Sheploo wasn't in the trailer. Plus, like Awakening, we probably don't need to import our "Shepards" to play and just play as a new character.Mack_Attack wrote...
So, seems like most people are thinking it's either:

Everytime I think EA might've turned over a new leaf, I'm reminded of they can just as bad as Activision.
Behold: BioWare selling themselves out. Had to happen sooner later, though some might argue it happened already.
This is pretty shameless. A blatant cash grab from the still lactating udder of the shooter multiplayer cash cow. I don't play Mass Effect for multiplayer, hell, I don't even play it so much for the action. I'm here to get my goddamn story on, not play with people over the internet who like nothing to more than to call each other racial slurs.
This is a bad move by BioWare. Granted I can't hold it against them since the rumor is that EA is making almost all games have a multiplayer element to them. But really, hasn't the game market had enough of sci-fi space marine shooters with multiplayer? Oh, but it'll most likely be class based! Yes, and Valve does it better than anyone else.
You know BioWare, I hold you in the esteem as I do Valve in terms of quality and innovation, but after this....lost a lot of respect for you. After shameless pandering you did for slobering fans in ME2(Garrus and Tali romances I'm looking at you), I figured that's as bad as it'd probably get. Oh my no, it got better.
I'll still play and buy DA2 and ME3, but don't you ever expect me to play a ME multiplayer. Let's just hope this time Kotaku's reliability isn't so reliable this time.
A single player campaign that would deal with either the occupation of Shanxi or the Skyllian Blitz? A prequal like that would've been excellent. But this? No. If this ends up being true, I can't in good concience get behind it.
BioWare you are known for telling stories, griping characters, and social dynamics that you can't find in other games. There are few other devs that pull off 'interactive story-telling' like you have with your games. This does not fit with your modis operandi.
Say that I'm over-reacting and maybe I, I'll admit it, but this just something that I can't see being a smart move.

Anyway, I know it isn't what everyone wants, but with three RPGs currently on the table I think Bioware has a little room to maneuver into other genres. So long as it doesn't affect their RPGs (any more than it already has) it's just good business sense, and lets not forget ALL game developers are businesses.

Huh, there was also a dying star mentioned in the final book too, the one the Illusive Man was watching. Something about it entering it's final stage.i love lamp x3 wrote...
coldest temperature on earth was recorded in vostok, antarctica. vostok is also a star system you can visit in mass effect 1. as for iron, it is the last element produced when a star is about to supernova. tali was monitoring a star that was rapidly aging for some unknown reason on her recruitment mission in me2.
... So... A star going supernova in the Vostok system?
I suppose only time will tell. I'm still none-the-wiser by most of the speculation here, though.
