So yeah it could happen. It could be pressure from EA to push out an FPS since I agree, it's not not BioWare's style to do a FPS.
People say things like this about every developer when rumours pop up, but really, who are we to know what a studio wants to try? A good few years ago, prior to Mass Effect's reveal, would anybody have gussed BioWare would do a third person shooter RPG? Now we have the Mass Effect series, which has gunplay predominantly based around very similar mechanics to other third person shooters. Would anybody have ever guessed Nintendo would farm out Metroid to a Western shooter and make it a first person game? Of course not, but then we got Metroid Prime, and it was goddamn incredible.
Sometimes what seems like the most unlikely scenario turns out to be exactly what a developer wants to do. They're creative people who enjoy making games, and understandably they dont want to stick to the exact same formulas and exact same concepts over and over again, even if its what we best know them for.
After all, BioWare isn't just known for its RPGs. It also has Shattered Steel and MDK2 among their lineup of games. As old as they may be, they're evidence that BioWare is not a company that neccessarily wants to make the same types of games, and it shouldnt be surprising if every so often they feel like mixing things up and trying something new.
I'm sure that whatever this FPS from BioWare is, Mass Effect or not, it is something BioWare genuinely wants to make. EA pressure aside, I'm sure it is a game BioWare has planned to make for awhile now, and will feature their unique touch and developer personality regardless of how it plays compared to their other games.

I would like an FPS however, i do not believe it to work. Its like the Halo franchise. They tried to make Halo Wars (well Bungie didn't, but still was based in the Halo universe), didn't work out so well. I am not saying I wouldn't play a Mass Effect FPS, but to me, this kind of thing could be a decision maker in what direction they would take the mass effect franchise. Also the whole appeal to ME was the diversity in decisions, and the personlization of that universe. Makes it well as the word entails, personal.EatChildren wrote...

I can completely understand your point of view, but I do think people are jumping the gun a little bit. What other developers do with their franchises is largely irrelivant to how BioWare will handle theirs. Its easy to pick and chose the failures of others and apply them here, but its impossible to truly know how BioWare as a company would handle a pure FPS. After all, they've never developed one.
In the end, no matter what BioWare do, there will be people who wont like it. Such is the nature of game development. I love Mass Effect, but I have no interest in Sonic Chornicles.
I guess I'm just a little bit disheartened by a lot of the negativity being thrown around by people regarding the rumours. I read a lot of it as "I dont like shooters, and I like Mass Effect, so BioWare shouldn't make a Mass Effect shooter!", which really isnt a fair. Nobody should expect a developer to only make the types of games they like. People dont need to like what they make, but they shouldn't expect them to only accomidate their taste and preference. They should expect every developer to, at some point, make a game that they wont like, regardless of how good it is.
I think BioWare have a very clear direction of what they want to do with Mass Effect 3. They've heard a lot of criticisms for Mass Effect 2, and Christina Norman went on record to say that one of the goals of Mass Effect 3 is to include 'more role playing' (although unspecified). I dont think the existence of a Mass Effect FPS would have any significant impact on how Mass Effect plays. If anything, it may give BioWare the freedom to accomidate their desires for a heavier action game into a more specific setting, without it intruding too much on ME3.
But yes, you're right, there's not much any of us can do except wait until December 11. I just wish people were a little less bitter and cynical, and a little more understanding that they wont always get what they want.

Not saying you're lying but when did Christina Norman say ME3 will include 'more role playing'? I would just like to hear or read the whole article or video because I love hearing the devs talk about the future of ME.

Cold (cold war)
Iron (Iron Curtain)
The clash (wasnt there a clash song used as a bond theme in one of the newer films?)
Spy RPG, ala Alpha Protocol but done with polish and style.

If it wasn't for the screenshot, it wouldn't be a bad interpretation, actually.

It wasn't the idea that failed, it was Obsidian who failed with the idea. Alpha Protocol had a really awesome concept, it was executed badly. If something similar was done by Bioware, you can bet it would be a good game.
Though I'd like a Bioware Spy RPG, I still think it's a ME spin off.

Flawed as it was, Alpha Protocol was still awesome! I could only imagine what Bioware could have done with that material. Assuming they stuck with it being an rpg at least.
