nukes are not a line of defence...you do not "defend" with a nuke. you attack.

I think he was talking about the Reapers
I'm anxious to see what the Council has to say about this:police:

I love how Shepard is just watching the Earth get tagged. He's all like "Wait for it!.......Wait for it!....Ok now" and then he slowly walks away. I bet the people on Earth are thinkin "Hey, no rush for help down here or anything!

Nukes could also be used as a line of defence!

yes, but not in a traditional sense.

you dont not use nukes to create the proverbial "line in the sand".

you use them with the intent of killing as many people as possible. that defines an offensive weapon.

they still can be used defensively, they just werent designed for it.

@AngusJimiKeith: Well, chances are that nuclear stockpiles would have been dismantled by that time since it simply is to expensive to maintain and use it in when there are mass accelerators that are at the very least "cleaner" than nukes.
Using it is one thing, using it in an effective way is a totally other. Chances are that detonating a nuke in space might do nothing to a reaper, so it needs to be used in atmosphere to get the heat and blastwave. That means dealing with radioactive fallout etc etc... I'm not totally discounting nukes, but I think BioWare's got something snazzy in store for us to go reaperbashing with comes winter 2011 :D

I'm willing to destroy London to kill six Reapers.

Sounds like a fair trade. Let's do that in every city that's attacked. Flawless plan ;)

not NYC. yankee stadium is too important ;)
although the fireworks show would be spectacular from my backyard.........
regardless, im starting to stockpile my weapons now. TO THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE STASH!!!!!!!

EDIT: @ NO85: i get it. im just being a pain in the ass. realistically, nukes are "out there". they could be a dud or an ace up our collective sleeve.

Yeah, I also assumed this but..... Given that the Citadel was attacked by a Reaper(Even though it was covered up) everyone still knows with the ship looks like. So he should already know that the ship is a supposed Reaper. Also, even if he didn't know they(the ships) were Reapers I wouldn't think he would refer to the ships as "they". He would just refer to them as ships and maybe think that the creatures on the ground were flying them. But, seeing as how he has some type of bad ass combat training and is able to shoot the mystery creature from miles away, while being injured and while the thing was moving at a high rate of speed, I would guess that whoever he works with or for has a pretty good handle on at least some useful information. Plus he knows Shepard. So I can't belive he is that oblivious to what is going on.

All this stuff about Nukes.....Haha! Are you all forgeting that they are machines. With very powerful shields. If using a bunch of Nukes was the simple solution I doubt they would have wiped out the galaxy as many times as they have, especially seeing as how the other civilizations were more advanced. Using a bunch of Nukes on, around or near Earth would just make the planet desolate and uninhabitable.

their "shields" are kinetic barriers. nukes are not kinetic weapons at all. in any way. nukes would bypass them. and im not saying spam them on every reaper. im saying use one or two on a couple of reapers to f*** with their mechanical heads until shepard shows up.

About the 9 million dead thing - isn't it possible he's just talking about London alone?

I know what their shields are. But they still defelect weaponry/projectiles. Why do you think in ME1 they had to wait until Sovereigns barrier was down to hit it. A Nuclear warhead is still encased in a "skeleton". It would never make it through the shields. The only thing they could do is detonate it near a Reaper. Even if they do that it would do nothing because a Nuke is a weapon that derives it's massive power from Thermo Nuclear Reactions. Heat, Force, Radiation! And unless I am mistaken that really wouldn't do much to a machine from a distance. Now an EMP on the other hand "might" be different story. I think you may have your weapons confused.

The Frontlines game had a part where a massive elite tank battalion was closing in on Moscow and they nuked the **** out of them twice and took out 90% of them
Pretty good defensive weapon if you use it right

Nukes create a powerful Electromagnetic pulse, part of that radiation emited from the reaction that you mentioned.

Also it should take a lot more than a few nukes to stop the Reapers or they never would've wiped out countless highly advanced civilisations.

what kind of distance are you talking? the effective range on nukes is HUGE. kinetic barriers are close to the reaper, not kilometers away. if that were the case, the alliance ships in ME1 wouldnt even be able to get close to sovreign. the heat would still work.

ALSO: emp is the basis of my nuke theory. EMPs COME FROM nuclear detonations. sure, theres other ways to create them, but nukes do indeed relase EMP, with the added benefit of melting away the hull.

Depends how many there are
If there are a thousand with the same attacking each city which probably has been mostly abandoned
Then it's a good strategy, if there are hundreds of thousands then it's time to bug out and nuke the entire site from orbit
It's the only way to be sure
Game over man. game over(pun intended)<_<
