In the Gnawed Noble Tavern in Denerim there's a woman called "Sophie's Guard" and I can't figure out what her purpose is. Is she part of a quest that I haven't gotten yet?

I've done most of the Origins so I've no idea where she comes into play. But her Voice is sexy good times.

Supposedly, she's part of the Crime Wave mission arc. Never really involved her but I suppose you can pick the room key off her in conversation. My rogues (Warden and party members both) are always good enough to get into the room without a silly 'key' though so I don't get much use of her.

Yep, she is part of "Crime Wave". You don't really need her as you can just pick the lock.

I always wonder where Sophie was and why she needed guarding.

Sophie is off making a difficult Choice. You should recognize her immediately, she looks a lot like Meryl Streep.

She's not much of a guard if you can walk right into that room and pick the lock on the chest without her having any clue of what happened.

Well, she does seem rather bored. And Sophie (according to Slim) isn't likely to be a loyalty inspiring boss.
