Every comic and book that comes out has Udina the "Councilor"....why exactly??? these are things you should avoid saying because it makes our choices seem pointless...you can't just say Anderson or Udina without a title? I mean what the frick man?

What single male person are you directing this at?

I mean, who is the "man" at the end of that?

Who are you heaping the blame onto?

...It's a turn of phrase. It doesn't actually mean a certain individual.

It's not canon, it's the default ME2 plot. They continue with it.

In ME, there is no such thing as canon, as we make our own.

Udina was probably the choice for the books and comics simply because unlike Anderson,

he is the quintisential politican, or simply because the books/comics work under the assumption

of the worst possible (for paragons anyway) ending in ME1.

I assume by "every" you mean the 2 that have referenced that. In the first, the change was being made at the end of Redemption anyway and the comic can easily take place after the book, now back to your bridge.

Udina rocks.

That's why.

Default plot. Not canon.

For purposes of expanding the ME universe, works such as Retribution assume that Udina was chosen as Councilor. They are not retcons of game choices.

Udina as councilor = "edgier". Thus, "default". Meh.

Retribution looked more like a flub on Karpyshyns fault. And the comic takes place around a year after Mass Effect 2 (and after Anderson stepped down from his position)

Honestly having a second option to kill the council with Udina in it would be glorious. I could already see the spittle flying out of that bastard's mouth as he stammers in indignation.

Glorious.

Why the hell would Anderson continue to be any political role when he hates it so much? Your character has absolutely no control over what Anderson does after he becomes councilor.

It's like getting mad that Harrowmont dies if you pick him to be king of Orzammar.

Anderson never stepped down if you chose him as Councilor.

Retribution and its like were written from the basis that Anderson was never Councilor in the first place. If Anderson was your pick for Councilor, the events in your canon don't happen as they do in Retribution and Inquisition. How much different is up to debate (certainly Inquisition doesn't require much), but Retribution would not occur as told.

I recently read Retribution and don't remember it anywhere saying that Udina was ambassador or that Anderson was not ambassador. I do recall at that the end Anderson said he was stepping down from his position (which again is never listed.) If you can find the page for me where it says this, (I overlook things when reading all the time, bad habit) then I would agree. However, I took the book as saying that Anderson was giving up his job whether it be ambassador or assitant...or just his Alliance admiral position.

Simply put...

Udina is a Natural Born Politician who knows how to get the things that he desires. The Alliance would much rather have him in power than Andersan because Udina is 'very good' at playing Politics and isn't afraid to toss his morales aside if it serves in the best interest for humanity.

He's like an older Renegade Shepard who dabbles in Politics.

Anderson is referenced to as Admiral Anderson, a title he never recieves as Councilor.
Udina is referenced as Councilor by Aria a few chapters in.

Yep, I just reread some parts and noticed that. I don't know how I overlooked that the first time.

And in this post quoted by me, I used 'ambassador' when I meant 'councilor'. Thanks for pointing me towards this, much appreciated.

I now agree that this is pretty odd that Udina is automatically named 'Councilor'. Hell, keep calling him just an ambassador in Retribution and the story would work with Anderson stepping down. Don't know why he's just automatically placed there.

They got lazy with the books/comic. Lets hope they don't get lazy with ME3.

It's because Anderson quits his job in the citadel in any case. Even if he was councilor, he quit, leaving Udina as the natural replacement.

I can see how this could be a literary headache, so I don't blame Drew too much. It's exceptionally difficult to write a good story with so many variables in people's personal canon.

Udina is not the @(*%(!&#($*@# ()@#($)(!@ )#$() !@()#$)@(! #$@#($ CANON CHOICE!!

No book or comic has said that.

I love you all, but you can be idiots sometimes.

Ok, udina does become the Councilor.  But he is not the canon choice.  People have misunderstood Retribution.

Isn't 'default' effectively 'cannon?' I mean, if they do make movies, they will have to decide on an 'official' set of decisions.

ME2 even treats the plot essentially as if the council was killed even if they weren't (by way of the Council's denial).

Udina is either Counciler, if you picked him, or Andersan steps down and than Udina becomes Counciler.

The Comic/Novel doesn't contradict anything.

It never made a lot of sense for Anderson to be councilor. I chose him, but he's a soldier.

What would really make sense would be for the councilor having been voted in as the result of a free democratic election, but for Shepard to have influence in such an election, he would have to be a lot harder to dismiss in ME2. Two years is not that long, not considering the degree to which the Alliance would have trotted him out as their 'top soldier.'
