Rumor: BioWare's New Mass Effect Is A Multiplayer Spin-off

"That Mass Effect game is not a massively multiplayer online version of BioWare's sci-fi RPG series, but a game that's designed to appeal more to the Call of Duty market, according to that source. We're told to expect player progression in the vein of Activision's wildly popular online shooter along with some sort of single-player component that does not feature Mass Effect's Commander Shepard in a leading role."

Now before all the RPG die-hards freak out, take a deep breath and think of the attention this could bring to the franchise and potentially influence the development of Mass Effect 3. Do you agree with the rumored introduction of multi-player in a traditionally single-player series? I know that I'm more than willing to welcome it, provided that it's done well and not hashed together for purely cash-grabbing purposes.

However... It'll be a sad day when CoD fans flood these forums and wars break out between the two different crowds.

I was very angry at this rumor at first, but if it's just a spin-off, then I am not too worried. I just fear that the series will become too mainstream and Bioware will please all of the casuals in ME3.
Yeah, we should be able to have to drink water and travel to the planets in real time in Mass Effect 3.

MP shooters are a dime a dozen....I know there is a huge market for them, probably a reason why they developed it.

Bad rumor, I don't want another Call of Duty.
It would be awesome. class based shooter where you can select any race in the Mass Effect Universe. And maps would be like they are in Star Wars Battlefront which was a super fun game.
I could see it world.

This is exactly what will happen. So I say more power to them, as long as it doesn't affect the single player game.

This isn't such a bad rumor. I can understand if they were turning ME3 into a FPS-Call of Duty style game, THEN that would be horrible. However, if this is just a spin-off/extension of the ME universe, that has nothing to do with Shepard, then how is this bad?
One of the more tragic thoughts of ME3 is that it will be my last ME experience, but with spin-off titles like this that explores other areas of the universe, them ME3 isn't the end, but literally the beginning.
As long as Bioware puts a lot of emphasis on story and actually give us a long single player experience, then I'm fine. I just don't want it to be short like the Call of Duty games. Also, I hope with the multiplayer, Bioware brings some innovation instead of just creating a "space" version of Call of Duty.

Or would it be a "cheap" release? Aka 29.99$ like TF2.

As long as this doesn't delay ME3 in ANY way shape or form, then whatever lol.

I don't mind this at all, and I've not bought a Call of Duty game since #1. It just makes it all the more likely that we won't have to worry about Bioware caving to demand for multiplayer and putting it in ME3 to some degree. And there -is- demand, one reason the franchise is a success is because it reaches both 'camps'.
Anyway, I'm hoping for a game set in the gap between ME2 and 3 which sets up some new characters and events for ME3 to mention. Also hope that it proves a little more original than just 'Mass Effect meets Call of Duty'. Hah, if it does end up being a First Contact War Shanxi game I can see similarities to Halo; Reach already.
Edit: And for those worrying about a delay to ME3 then I wouldn't. I'm pretty sure others have hit the nail on the head when they have pointed out the Montreal studio isn't (seemingly) working on anything at the moment, I'd bet it's that studio which are developing this game alongside the studio creating ME3.

Strip Sentinels of their tech armor (thus making soldiers the best defensive class, as they should be), give soldiers exclusive access to higher-tiered guns and the soldier, with few cooldowns to hold him/her back, will likely end up being an incredibly OP class.
I don't think soldier fans need to worry about a class whose entire concept is a walking, breathing definition of an FPS/TPS.
