I understand what you're saying eatchildren and I do play shooters, just not halo or cod.
TF2, H-L, Portal, KZ, Bioshock, DX, Systenshock and zillions more as well as third person shooters such as MGO, U2(multi) and well a billion other games, but I like ME for exactly what it is. I know that I am jumping here, but to be honest, the mention of cod by itself gets me mad, not only for the fear that it might be a clone, no, but because it's a game (rumor) that was mad from ground up, just for that fan base.
An example would be ea's new MOH (which I obviously didn't play either), now that game from the get go looked like crap and I didn't get what all the hype was all about, but then again it's the same case of hype with cod, the latest rockstar games (gta4 and red dead) and lots of others. I even looked up some vids to see what it all about and could believe what I saw, it was that sniping vid and I saw the guy shooting far away from the opponent's head and getting a head shot, with the opponent's head exploding. This in 2010, this and people only knew it was bad when the reviews kicked in. And what was that, ea wanting a piece of the cake of activision and that's exactly my fear.
Oh and that wasn't my point by mentioning barbie games, it was more sarcasm
Until Dec then.
If anything, it should be comforting to know that EA already have their 'Call of Duty' game in Medal of Honor, which while got very mixed reviews actually sold really quite well. They've also got the Bad Company series of games, and while I think Bad Company 2 appeals more to the Call of Duty gamer than staying true to the classic Battlefield formula (where's BF3 dice!!!), its still stands quite strongly on its own.
So even if a Mass Effect shooter were to 'appeal to the Call of Duty crowd', that doesn't mean it will be a generic Call of Duty clone, or even like Call of Duty. Bad Company 2 does many, many similar things to COD to 'appeal to the Call of Duty crowd', yet stands alone quite nicely. Killzone 2, a game you play and obviously enjoy, has plenty of similarities to the aspects of Call of Duty that make it appeal to that particular crowd, which again still standing on its own two feet.
You seem to have similar taste to myself (minus Killzone, which I dont really like, and I'm over BioShock), so I can totally understand your worries. I just think its a bit too early to jump the gun, especially when the 'catered to the Call of Duty market' comment is really just coming from Kotaku's report.
End of the day, if it
is a multiplayer focused shooter, I'm confident it will be a game that BioWare wanted to make, and something they wanted to do in expandng the Mass Effect universe. I'm sure it will be accessible and streamlined to some respect, much like Call of Duty, but so was BioShock (compared to System) and I still really enjoyed it.
Then again, I'm probably still on a high from GoldenEye. I was so certain that would be generic, terrible Call of Duty clone, yet it was so far from it. Great stuff!
