Game Informer has a list in the new issue of the "top 30 game characters that defined a decade."  Loghain is the only Dragon Age character and made it to the top ten, at # 9.  They liked that he is more complex than a typical moustache-twirling villain.  Kudos to the Dragon Age writers for creating such a memorable character.

That picture makes him look a lot younger than he was in-game (but sort of reminds me of The Stolen Throne cover art). Definitely one of the more memorable "villains" in recent years. I wish more folks would read the novels though, it's hard to not appreciate his character after knowing the events that shaped him.

Novels? I love reading! But there are novels? Where?

Yes, it reminds me of the TST cover, too, though I didn't think it makes him look younger.  I love it.  Awesome illustration.

TST cover for reference:

LOL  Where have you been?

There are two companion novels by David Gaider, both prequels.  The Stolen Throne is about the rebellion against Orlais and The Calling is about a Grey Warden expedition, including a young Duncan.  They're great, highly recommended.

Lol thanks!  If there are more, please recommend.  The most recent books I read were O'Henry.  I'm new to the world of Dragon Age.

Loghain had depth of character, but he was an entirely ineffectual villain. His villainy career after Ostagar is basically just one blunder after another, culminating in utter failure.

What about Alistair?

I know, I know at 47 I'm a terrible fangirl, but he has got to women gamers like no other. Blessed Dehlia has even created a mod so we can marry him... When has that happened with a game character in the West?

His is the charm that's launched a thousand fics!

Including mine...

That's the thing about Dragon Age. Everything about it is consistantly high quality but no one element snaps out at me and says "you'll remember me forever" like an HK-47 or a Minsc.

In a way, that's true, but swooping etc is pretty memorable.

Go for the eyes Boo and Master can I kill the meatbag now?

Well, at least Ali has some very memorable things to say... More so than Loggy, of him I can really only recall the pigtails speech.

MInsc / Boo should be in every list. I mean...he is the only ranger with a pet hamster. How awesome is this?

Alistair has gotten some recognition, too.  He couldn't recall where, but my husband said he saw him on a list of most popular video game characters.

Oh ok!  Well, welcome!  I didn't mean to sound snarky.  Image IPB  Those are the only DA-related novels so far.  No further ones have been announced.  David Gaider said in the PAX interviews that he would like to write more but hasn't had time.

Give him time, BioWare!!  We want more deep characters like this.  Image IPB

P.S. If you haven't read them, you might like George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire novels.  A lot of similarities to the DA universe.

He has some good dialogue if you spare him.  Otherwise, it is hard to get to know the character well without reading the novels and especially TST.  The Game Informer article mentions TST so they are taking into account more than just game stuff.

This is a no-spoiler forum so I won't go into detail, but that's exaggerating.  He pretty nearly does pull it all off and it's tough to beat him unless you get a certain NPC in your corner.  Anyway, the article is talking about his complexity, and his failings are part of that.

I'm not sure the word "villain" really suits him, honestly, but can't think of a better adjective. Well, maybe tragic hero works.

Incompetent crosses my mind when I think of Origins.*rolleyes*

It's so sad, I can see the potential but alas, he was supposed to be a character you gladly decapitate ... and this first impression kinda stuck. TST didn't change anything for me.

Alistair should have been in the top 10 before Loghain...they should read the fansite here. If they had they would know that...Alistair has more gush about him than Loghain ever had....
Btw....the books are awesome! And I almost feel sorry for Loghain in some ways...more so for Maric though. Maric gave so much of himself including pieces of his very soul for Fereldan....I think he's just as awesome as Alistair...must be the Theirin charm. lol
And as far as Dave Gaider writing more? It depends on the Characters involved if I will be buying them....I don't like the concept of DA2.....Image IPB

Loghain is an exceptional character, one of the best I have ever seen in a videogame.

Antagonist works well, I think.

@Namira, responding to different posts?  I could cut and paste but what's the point?

His creator liked him:

I remember Alistair actually is one on Origins I really enjoyed writing just because, most people don’t know this, but we had an entire version of Alistair where he was this grim, veteran warrior. Older and just a very serious type who was very distrustful of you and he wasn’t much fun. Nobody was liking him because he was being so distrustful. We really wanted to set this up as a romance interest as well as a good buddy for a male player and it wasn’t working. It was really touching on that Carth (A KOTOR character Gaider also wrote) vibe a little bit much but he really hit a bad note with the male players. So, it came down as one of those revisions where we just couldn’t fix him. There’s something fundamentally wrong here so I had to go back and go, ‘alright how about I just have a little bit more fun with him and maybe the player will too.’ And so I did. Even though it was painful to make the decision to start all over, it really worked out well I thought. I think Alistair and the fact that he’s fun really came across. He was quite a popular character"
