Graphical limitations and perhaps an innate dislike of BDSM leads Bioware against the depiction of female Qunari mages. Actually, it's probably just graphical limitations.
As to correspondences with Islam, yeah, there seem to be a few. There also seem to be correspondence with Imperial Chinese Confucian examinations,
