Most of the accents in DA:O were real. At least, that's what some developers said.

Marjolaine's accent made me cringe. It seems that others weren't as bothered by it, but to me it was absolutely horrifying. It was precisely the same with the Orlesian woman in the market district of Denerim. Far too much emphasis on gurgling r:s. French doesn't even sound like that.

I love Leliana's voice. But then, she's an actual French person. I know Orlesians aren't supposed to be french, but it's still painful for me to listen to. It just sounds wrong.

I recall there being...five Orlesians in the game. Well, six, if you count Riordan, but I don't. I think three of them share the same voice actress. Erlina and Marjolaine had the same voice actress. Then Isolde, then Liselle. And, of course, Leliana.

I think it was probably difficult to find authentic French actresses for such small roles, which is why only Leliana's actress is French. I don't think the cost of getting a French actress from wherever in the country to come over and do twenty minutes of voice work is worth the effort.

No, you're right, Marjolaine's accent was pretty awful. I had forgotten how bad it was until I watched the scene on Youtube again. It's very caricatural. The woman who did Marj also did the Sultry Human and Elf voices which were similarly cringe-worthy.

My French teacher in high school had a "fake" accent. In that she had that terrible stereotypical French accent you claim no one actually has. But she was from France. In fact she missed the first class due to visa problems. Just because you didn't like an accent doesn't mean it's fake. Some people do sound that way.

My French teacher was French, as well. French Canadian, to be exact. Her accent was similar to Leliana's (edit: or even Riordan's I forgot about him), if a bit stronger and sort of je ne sais quoi. She had trouble with pronouncing the English "h" due to it being silent in French. Makes me wanna meet a super native Orlesian who has trouble with pronunciation.

No offense, but being French I found the Orlesian accents funny, you could tell those weren't their real accents.  I know its a resource issue but anyone feel the same about accents?

While I would really like it I am not sure It is  going to happen... ever.  The only ok-accent in DAO is Leliana's.  But, hey - It's pop culture  - As if most American care (sigh)

Yes - remind me to post something from my Guess-the-accent collection - Most ns can't tell the non ns accents themselves -  They already have wrong kind of conception how  one or another foreign accent OUGHT to sound.

If my teacher had sounded like Leliana I would have paid a hell of a lot more attention in class.

Canadian french is vastly different from French and French.. Canadian French sounds like and american trying to speak French with a German accent. I would imaging a québécois would have a normal English accent as opposed to a french person speaking English.

Leliana has one sultry voice, I'll give you that.

Have the Welsh Elves been mentioned here yet? Because I want to know what other people think about their accent change.

Edit: Olivier - I should have clarified; my teacher spent the first ten years of her life in Canada then lived in Paris for twenty years. I think her accent had been influenced by multiple French accents.

The accent change is  bad because it brings inconsistency - But, on the other hand,I love English and English accents (as in accents variations in English, not some "British" accent some people think all of the people in the UK speak ) and it is always a pleasure to listen to less common varieties.

I don't mind the idea of an elf accent change, since it's apparently only for the Dalish. It just feels a bit more suitable for a nomadic group of mystics than the American accent did from DAO.

France wasn't the only country that went through medieval times. Besides, Ferelden is based off 12th century England.

Charles Martel's victory wasn't the first or the last for Europe against the Moors or the Turks.

Because those french people spoke, well, french. Not that "english" people (many of whom were french too) spoke anything we'd recognise as english.

I guess it's just what america sees as "their" medieval period due to adopting the language.

I agree. Also, within a different region of Thedas, the Dalish will talk differently compared to the tribe(s) we've already met in Ferelden due to their different nomadic routes. I thought the American accent was out of place in Thedas, especially since it's the Dragon Age equivalent of medieval Europe.

Woah, thread-plosion!
