not M16. MI6. as in "i" the letter.
also that rifle is definately NOT an M16.
it does have one odd feature for a mass effect gun though, one that shouldnt be there....and wasn't on the original incisor.
it has a charging handle. this may be a simple design oversight, but when i saw that i immediatly thought "gunpowder". mass effect guns dont load from magazines, so the charging handle is unecessary....but maybe this is just me thinking way too hard about this...
I've noticed several other things surrounding this same idea, that being that this next game is going to be a return to the past, specifically, the First Contact War (Relay 314 Incident). That Incisor sniper rifle started it off but go with me here.
1) The first thing about the gun is that it does indeed look like the Incisor, but it clearly has some differences, and adding what you said above it only adds to my assumption that that is in fact an earlier version of the Incisor M-29, a sniper rifle made by the scientists at Cerberus (Illusive Man's email after downloading DLC). These are HUMAN scientists, making me think that they took an older human gun, one abandoned by time for thermal weapons, and revamped it.
2) Judging by the armor, I have to go once more to Cerberus for this one. A look at Miranda's armor in ME2 shows us that same hexagon texture. And again, Cerberus is a pro-human organization, meaning they most likely base most of their technology off of old human tech. With that in mind, the soldiers armor could easily be an earlier version of human military grade armor.
2) Another thing that caught my eye was that the marine in the video has a bandage wrapped around his leg. When in ANY Mass Effect has anyone used a bandage? even a doctor? This shows that he didn't have access to medigels, and if thats true than it can be assumed that he didn't have access to an Omni tool either. This shows that there has been no contact made with Citadel Space yet.
3) When we get to take a look out the window, there's a lot of skeptisism about what is seen outside. By my account, the first thing that can be seen outside is....grass. And not just any normal grass, MOWED grass. you can clearly see signs of a mower via the parallel lines and different shades of green in the grass. Moving outward from there, the next thing we come across is a fence, with architecture that seems extremely human, and beyond that, what looks like a sidewalk (debatable, I know).
4) If we continue on with the idea that we are now looking down from a human building, then lets start to draw some connections between the scenario our hero finds himself in and the occupation of Shanxi. Notice that the windows of the building are shot IN, and with Hugh Man on the inside looking out on his target, it gives us the sense that he is in a defensive situation, not offensive. In that type of situation I can't picture a marine kicking back against a wall inside of an alien building. This plays a key part too, because in the First Contact War the humans had to resort to Guerilla tactics because they were so busy getting their asses kicked.
5) Now, finding proof that the enemies are turians is pretty much impossible, but still more things point in that direction. again if we look at the out the window shot, we'll notice a large hunk of debris smashed into the front yard of the house. During the FCW, the turian ships flying high above the planets surface would drop debris from orbit onto unsuspecting scouting parties. Now, with this we can discern that this debris out front is in fact some of the debris that the turians dropped. And judging by the sunshafts behind our hero, it is safe to assume that some of this light may be coming from holes created in the roof of the building by pieces of debris that broke off the larger portion.
6) At the final moment of the outside shot, 2 humanoid shadows can be seen in the 'street'. As I was saying before, the humans were on the defensive during the FCW, meaning those could be two turians scouting the ruins of the city.
So, to bring all of this together: My assumption is that Bioware is stemming off from the main storyline to tell the story of humanity's first contact with alien life, and the only time a human colony was occupied by another alien race.
EDIT: made it easier to read >_<
EDIT2: I think I may be right guys...
The planet Aequitas in Mass Effect 1 is known for it's Iron Canyons and -128.5 F temperature
