Yet again, it looks like some folks are jumping on the, "I don't like it," bandwagon. And, as I've said before, well, it sucks to be them. I, for one, really digg the new look. It's been mentioned before in past reviews and even some threads that the Darkspawn resembled your basic LotRs Orc far too much. Even the Hurlock Alphas resembled Uruk'hai. Once again, with these new creature designs, BioWare's Art team is showing thier awesome prowess in taking the baddies of DA2 as far from other Fantasy baddies as possible.

The appearence of the new Hurlocks are very unique, thier twisted faces well complemented by the sharp, almost knife like style of thier armor. One has to remember the Darkspawn, after several thousand years, have developed thier own strange culture which reflects the Chaotic and Bizzare state of thier minds. In DAO it really just looked like they took armor from the other races, melted them a bit, then slapped 'em back on. Now, you really get a sense that the Darkspawn are representing thier corrupt race in a much more original fashion.

And the Emmissaries? Holy Crap. I think they might just, for the first time, creep me out. They look like the Love Child of Clive Barker and Guillermo Del Toro's twisted minds. The warped, desicated design really gives the sense that the Dark Blood Magic at they're disposal is slowly destroying thier bodies, almost draining them from within. Brlliant.

With what we've seen so far, I can not wait to see what the remaning 'spawn will look like. Next should be the Shrieks, no? Awesome.

The new Hurlock design sucks. However, they would look a lot better if their lower body was completely covered in armor (in my opinion at least). The new Emissaries look good though.

The Hurlocks, not so good. The Hurlocks armor looks wrong. First on the screen shots and videos it just looks like bad polygons. Second, according to the mythology on the page it is "found" armor but people in DAO didn't wear that sort of armor - and I hope that armor style doesn't crop up in DAO II. I actually really like the DAO Hurlock design.

The Emissaries look good albeit the Hellraiser bondage gear is a bit much. It almost sounds like there are just "Emissaries" and not Hurlock Emissaries, Genlock Emissaries and such.

All they have to do is remove the chainmail head cover thingy from the hurlocks and everything will be fine.

I don't think it's fair to tar all people with the same brush just because they don't like the look. Obviously the design wont be changed, but this being a forum, I think it's personally fine for people to express their dislike, as long as it's in a polite fashion. I personally agree with a lot of people in saying the new Hurlocks look like they were inspired by Skeletor, especially considering I've seen them at a games con. I know that they were still a work in progress, but I doubt they will change too much. Still, I can live with it, but I wouldn't call it unique etc.

Which I believe, according to the codex is exactly what they were meant to have done. It fit them in my opinion, the new armour looks a bit... over the top, but again nothing I can't live with, I just hope there are some variations between each hurlock come release. I liked that DAO hinted at darkspawn culture with their creation if supposed idols and their corruption and defiling of the other races' architecture.

And the Emmissaries? Holy Crap. I think they might just, for the first time, creep me out. They look like the Love Child of Clive Barker and Guillermo Del Toro's twisted minds. Echoing what some have said already, the new Emmissary seems to have a very Nosferatu look, which I quite like, deffinately makes them stand out. The one 'issue' I have with that is... I thought that emmissaries were just standard of the darkspawn types but with the ability to use magic. I'm wondering if we are now done with the genlock emmissary/hurlock emmissary and instead they are now their own 'type' of darkspawn. Just seems strange to me, but I quite like the look, will have to see how it is portrayed in game though.

The Hurlocks, as I have already said a great many times, suck.

I kind of dig the Emissaries, though. Yeah, I definitely like them. Their new look compliments their gameplay combination of annoying and fearsome. Kudos to the art team.

Are people not allowed to have an opinion that differs from yours or Biowares?
Personnaly I could learn to accept the emmisary design.  Still seems a bit odd given that they are spellcasting versions of Hurlocks or Genlocks and so should look more like them (human wizards don't differ from regular humans).   Maybe bioware will change the background so they are their own sub species now.
The new Hurlock design though is just bad.  The original hurlocks looked like monsters with just a trace of what they used to be left, these new ones look too much like people who wear daft armour and decided to cut their lips off, its not scary - its silly.  Glad darkspawn are not the main focus of this game.

Why is it nothingness?

In DAO, we are specifically told that Emisarries are Hurlocks or Genlocks with the ability to use magic.  Thus, they looked the same as other Hurlocks or Genlocks.  Just like juman mages didn't look any different from other humans (as mattylee10 pointed out a few posts above).

Now, they seem to be their own species.  That's kind of a big change, no?

The lore must be modified?  History must be altered?  Facts must change because we now have a shiny new engine that can do shiny new things?

Magic did not alter a hurlocks body structure - see the magic wielding Hurlocks in Origins.  See the codex entry that told us that Emisarries are just hurlocks who use magic.

If Bioware wants to do as you suggest, make these changes simply because they can, or they think it will be 'cool' to do so, that's their choice.  My choice is to be annoyed about it.  You can choose not to be, that's your option.  But to ignore the change or pretend it's not there - that's silly.

Evolve, ... such a nice word. Not to come around being insulting, but do you have any knowledge on things like evolvement!?
Evolvement is a natural pattern which describes the process of genetic altering of species over the period of time. The key aspect is time, just in case I really need to point it out. DAII plays around the same time as DAO does, but only spans nine-ten years more as far as we've been told so far. Now, how are the odds the Emissaries change into an entire new race (maybe even species) in the process of less than a decade? And think carefully before answering "Uldred did it!"!

What we are being presented is not evolvement, but sudden change. Change itself is not a bad thing, but changing an entire appearance/antagonist's outward is no thing that qualifies as tweaking.

One can always say that the new Emissaries are just a more powerful subgenre of the normal ones, just like regular abominations are for normal mages. I would be totally fine with it. But I think everyone can sympathize with our opinion that the new Hurlock does look nothing like the old darkspawn.
And please, don't come at me with "We don't want 08/15 Orcs in DA", because we got the normal Skeletons, we got Werewolves, we got elves, dwarfs, demons, magic and so on and on and on. Having Orcs in there is nothing like uncreative. Not the fact they are orcs, but the way they are implemented is what makes them good or misplaced. I dare to say the Darkspawn were excellently embodied.

So please, don't insult our intelligence with such a pityful debate on whose orcs are better, what looks are more fitting. That is all subjected to personal preferences. BioWare thought they needed another ones, we can't change that other than voicing our concerns. Just as you advocate for the new looks, there are tons of people that prefer the old ones like me.

In the ned, what is essential and should be pressed upon is the Toolset that would for instance enable modders to retexture the Darkspawn into the old ones. I would sure dig it as it stands now.

It's a big change when you compare the Hurlocks from DAO with those that'll come in DA2.

Though both the Hurlock and Emissary maintained their own creepy looks, their skin just looks too bland to me. When I saw my first Hurlock in DAO, I was a bit suprised at how ugly and creepy it was. But when I look at these Hurlocks, I hardly can withstand the urge to laugh because I might fall out of my wheel chair if I do. Same for Emissary.

Perhaps it's just me, but the creepy, scary and ugly elements have faded in my eyes... Or, at least, for now. They still keep their creepy, scary, intimidating and frightening battle cries (I hope).

The armor doesn't look that bad. In DAO, it looked like the Hurlocks were completely wrapped up in clothes. If I could mod, I probably would've put a pretty bow (colored pink) on them. :wizard:
The clothes of the Hurlocks now actually look what I think they should've looked like. But the armor seems a bit pointy though...

Still, this isn't keeping me from buying DA2. I'll get used to it, as these new designs really don't look that bad. There's nothing wrong with change. And we all know that when something changes, people are going to resist because change can be frightening.

And besides, DA2 isn't about Hurlocks and Emissaries after all...

...

Right?

Not too big a fan myself. Too much of a difference between themselves, and the Hurlocks. They look like an entirely different species where as they were more or less just more powerful Genlocks or Hurlocks in DAO. Probably done to make them more distinct but still not a fan.

I'm honestly not liking the shoulder pads on or the weird helmet on the hurlocks.. i thought the new armor on them in awakening was cool but this new weird pointy stuff has got to go, and the emissaries look .. feminine. i really did like the way the darkspawn looked before, i didnt see them as "orcs" as some people have suggested, more like zombies. i dont mind the new skin tones but the armor is a definite no for me

Hurlocks looks just silly -.- They look like undead, not darkspawn.

Emissary I dont mind if it ends up looking as is in game, though as others pointed out, a bit S/M look with the leather strap on face.. I mean, why do they wear it? It dosnt provide protection, and it seems wierd that darkspawn, living plague, care about style or whatever <.<

EDIT: Ah yeah the armor too on hurlocks, I dont like those pointy stuff at all either, but I kind of didnt talk about it since that can change from enemy to enemy. I  thought darkspawn was like, wear what works, not it suddenly looks like they make.. Stuff that makes them look evil for lulz?  I'd think they'd just make something that protects and is easy to get on, not caring about how it bloody looks XD

People resist change for reasons other than fear. Imagine a fantasy novelist you admire who writes a great book, and in it he/she describes some characters or monsters a certain way, with distinctive features. Now in the next book in that series, with no explanation, they are described completely differently, for no apparent reason. The book may still be great, but you expect a certain amount of continuity. At the very least I hope we get some lore reason why these Hurlocks are far different.  Maybe I'm in a minority here, but one feature of a great RPG is (or used to be) a great story.  And the story is told through more than codex entries and cinematic cutscenes.

The only thing I don't like about the Hurlocks is the chain-mail thing on their heads, and if you remove that you pretty much have a whiter version of the ones in DA:O except with a more human-esque features. Emissaries however are very awesome looking.

The writer decides whether the story remains the same or not, regardless of what others think.
Sure, the story is partially influenced by the fans. But that doesn't mean the story is made to the likes of the fans. Some people might like the newer Hurlock look more than others. Some might hate it. And even if the haters are gonna hate, it doesn't change anything.
You really can't compare a book with a game. Or at least not completeley. A book is all about words and fantasy. The writer provides the words. It's up to you to complete the picture.
When they say "He was a big, huge person with some muscle. His skin looked a bit bland and he had a lot of scars on his chest. The right side of his face looked like a bunch of rotten meat.", chances are we both think of something different. What you think might not be the same as I think.
In this case, you are comparing the behavior of certain people to the looks of certain people. The behavior is unlikely to change, unless otherwise specified. Looks, however, can change throughout the story.
This is what the designers have thought. I don't blame them nor hate them for having taken this path.
