It's a big change when you compare the Hurlocks from DAO with those that'll come in DA2.
Though both the Hurlock and Emissary maintained their own creepy looks, their skin just looks too bland to me. When I saw my first Hurlock in DAO, I was a bit suprised at how ugly and creepy it was. But when I look at these Hurlocks, I hardly can withstand the urge to laugh because I might fall out of my wheel chair if I do. Same for Emissary.
Perhaps it's just me, but the creepy, scary and ugly elements have faded in my eyes... Or, at least, for now. They still keep their creepy, scary, intimidating and frightening battle cries (I hope).

I miss the pink slimy texture skin that looked like open sores.

I for one support this new art change. Hurlocks looked way too much like Orcs... now they are unique snowflakes and I like them. They're some twisted demonic undead army hybrid, and they certainly look the part.

Great now we get a load of Nosferatu to face, seriously the concept team this time round are well..
How to put this nicely? lost the touch? flinged the lucky cat? overcooked the turkey? I don't know.
If the army of Skeletors wasn't enough, it seems like they are just doing the old 'copy and paste' with a little difference.
To me there is really nothing unique or scary about these "new" darkspawn at all.
Apart from those angry ramblings is the thought of why Bioware did not listen to their beloved fans this time round?
Does this whole new art design exclude the opinion of a majority amount of this fanbase?
This is speaking by record here, how many topics have there been about changing the new darkspawn concept?
"Questions, questions, questions, you'd think Bioware fans would be more interested in "action.""

While trying to keep an open mind, I really can't say that I'm overly impressed here (quite the opposite in fact). The emissary is...well, let's just say...exaggerated in its features. Maybe a bit scary initially, but that's about it. As for the Hurlock, well all due respect to the artists, but it's Skeletorish features made me laugh as well. A lot. I'm fairly positive that this was not the intended reaction. This was not the case with both original (DA:O) models.

I am going with most of the people on here. Emissary is cool. Hurlock looks like Dyspair from Marvel comics but not as cool.
I also liked the bladed shaman style headdress worn by the Hurlock Emissaries in Origins. I'm sad to see it go.

It seems to me instead of concept art we should have had actual screenshots of the new hurlocks and emissaries. I could care less about concept art at this point with the game near launch.

Good point, as often the concept art and in game models will end up looking different. I actually like the hurlock concept art, but in game they look ridiculous.

I don't see why they had to screw around with the Darkspawn at all to be honest, I mean they were just supposed to be corrupted men weren't they?
Those Hurlock pics just look like a boy in a halloween costume.
Can't say much better for the Emissaries tbh.
The Hurloc grey armour got a bit boring after a while in Origins, maybe a bit more spiky & maybe red armour, but overall I thought they were OK.
And why is the Hurloc wearing shorts? doesn't it evade the point of armour if theres big gaps in it?

I will refrain from commenting as i don't think anyone wants to know what i think of the artwork and it would upset people.

Just acquired the new Gamepro that features an article on Dragon Age 2. It's mostly a discussion of story telling and art direction, overall an interesting read. However there was a screen shot of Male Hawk fighting what I think are Hurlocks, however they don't really look like the concept art shown on the main website. Overall they share a humanoid, cadaverous look but these guys are wearing pieces of "real" armor (Chest armor and mail skirts I think that aren't spiky). The article mentions that Varric tends to stylize/embellish/spice up/etc things and I realized that most of what we've seen of the Hurlocks has been from his original telling of Hawk's escape from Kirkwall. The one Cassandra calls Bull**** on. So it occurs to me that either Bioware has changed the Hurlocks again, or that what we originally saw was never intended to be their true design, it was more Bioware's way of telling us that our Narrator might be slightly unreliable.

Does the new Emissaries remind anyone of the Architect? They do me because of their hands.

As long as they don't make them fluffy cute bunny's I'm okey with the design. In the end I just kill them, no matter their looks. I like the fact the Hurlock is more suited up though, but the emissary should go on a fat rich diet :-p

Awesome! Good job, art team! Really distinguishes darkspawn as twisted creatures instead of generic monsters.

good thing the game doesn't have the darkspawn isn't the main focus of the game or else my future Hawke would be dying of laughter over the hulock look.

I wouldn't call the new hurlock look a twisted creature, cut your lips of, make sure to stay out of the sun so your skin skin get's white, then mold your nose a little and you look like s hurlock.rab****annel wrote...

Are..are we suppose to ride the emissaries? Or is the oversize horse bit suppose to keep them from swallowing their tongue?

i think the emissary looks brilliant! Heres hoping in game they use blood magic and or blue fire and black lightning! Thatd be SWEET.

I'm just kind of hoping that this change will only be present in an area different than any of the places we explored in DAO. I really can't imagine starting off running away from Lothering and this is what the darkspawn look like. I mean, we were just there in the last game at about the same time. It probably won't mean much to the newcomers, but to those of us that played the first we won't be able to help but be jarred by it. Or maybe that's a minority appeal, I dunno.
Either way, I'll get over it. More importantly, this emissary. Is this a universal look? It'd be cool if that were actually the shriek incarnation that wasn't present in DAO. I used to think that emissaries were just created from people who were mages before they became darkspawn, but then I would always wonder how genlocks could become mages if they came from dwarves, who had no magic. So emissaries are now just created from anyone who is intelligent and they all end up looking like this?
Sorry, I've never been a huge lore buff but I do like explanations and continuity.

concept art is good, but I think we should see how it looks in the game. there maybe is better picturs out there but this is the one I found without Hawke in it.

the teeth sems to be wrong they weren't human like in the first game, the skin doesn't seem to have the feel of rotting flesh like the the first game.

Totaly agree.
When I saw the first DAO trailer about the battle of Ostagar, I've thought "Wow ! These monsters are pretty scary ! Looks like... heeee... Sort of orcs but lot more "demonic" and "undead-like" ".
And when I saw the new hurlocks i've thought "Hoho ! An army of undead coming from "The Mummy Returns" or another crappy movie ?" .
... And I don't speak about the ogre ! Someone here, on the BSN, said that they look like "clowns"... Well, now I really think about a giant clown when I see a DA ogre, thanks a lot !

I don't like the look of these new Emmessaries and Hurlocks. Mostly since i like the old design but I think that these "New" Darkspawn could be Undead hurlok and undead emmasaries created by a Genlocak necromancer. Because i think mixing both designs would make everyone happy
