Really like the emissary look. Hurlock... Meh, not worse then the DAO version, but not any better. Although, I was not a huge fan of goblinishzerg look, personally, in DAO.

Aren't zombies also corrupted, altered versions of human beings..? Especially if it's zombies with reptilian bits?

Well, aren't YOU clever! Fine. But they weren't as scary. :P

Oh great. I was trying to get over how stupid the hurlocks look and now emissaries look like redeads. I am so happy they said darkspawn aren't prominent in this game so I don't have to see these horrible jokes that much.

I do quite love the new look of darkspawn.... it screams "Run for your lives!!"

It screams "Huur huur I be stupid git" to me. I liked the older look more.

I think they both suck. =]

While the lore behind the darkspawn interests me, genlocks and herlocks rank up there with orcs and goblins as boring, stock fantasy mooks. And you know what? In both DA:O and DA 2, they look like boring, stock fantasy mooks.

To me, conversation about whether DA:O or DA 2 herlocks look better is like conversation about whether mayonnaise or ketchup is the more interesting condiment.

Clearly, it is mayonnaise.

Although, if given a choice, I'll skip sauced condiments completely. The natural flavor of the food cooked with olive oil is superior to condiments.

Well, that's mayonnaise, by virtue of baconnaise. Also, it's not sugar masquerading as tomato sauce, so it has that going for it, but that's neither here nor there.

The new Emisarry design is interesting to me. I like they they correct their posture with weird bodice straps. Kinda cool. But like the Darkspawn changes in general; totally unnecessary fluff. I don't expect we'll be fighting that many of them so it hardly matters.

As for Darkspawn magic, who knows, but aren't Emisarries a separate "sub" class of Darkspawn? I figured it worked like it did for the living races; some darkspawn are born with magical potential, others are not.

No condiment is a good condiment

In conjunction I would rather prefer to imagine the darkspawn in my head

That way I can assume I am killing Paper Airplanes the entire time. Because they are work of my mortal enemies... The Paper Airplane factory which in this case would be the Archdemon. So at the end of DA:O I would rather think I am fighting a factory than a Dragon. I need to stop typing freely as pretty soon I will start to sound insane.

For some reason the emissary is reminding me of something from past games or books(I think), because I keep picturing that it should be levitating inches above the ground rather than walking as it form of movement. I can't quite place where I get this from.

I wonder if having their back bent like that effects the emisary's movement at all?

At this point I have mixed feelings about the visual overhaul of the darkspawn. I still have a hard time thinking of these guys as the same things I fought in the first game. Bad. But the new looks do offer a more "corrupted-diseased" image, which is cool.

So, now emisaries are a completely separate species?

Hurlocks come from human broodmothers . . .genlocks from dwarves . . .ogres from qunari . . . shrieks from elves . . . .and emisaries from ??????

Not to mention - they weren't a separate species in Origins . . . . .

Your link leads me to cutesy anime stuff.

Could be the arcane horror, for some reason I had the feeling it was an old D&D monster or something from novels, dunno.

For the other poster, I can forgive inconsistancy. I found DA1 was very lacking in bad guys and models and support any retcon to add more variety.

It's almost as if the Dragon Age: Journeys team presaged the new art direction.

With maybe a little bit of this:

The darkspawn from Origins look a lot more evil and menacing than the new ones. I don't know why BioWare is changing the art design direction. The new ones look like herp derp bungling idiots as opposed to creatures feared the world over.

/sigh

I dont see the point in that huge triangular spike on their shoulders. Looks more hampering than practical.

I don't mind the new hurlock look . . . I just don't see why we;'re now making a separate species out of what was not a separate species. . . .

These two images are the ones that most undermine the fearsomeness of the Emissary:

The one on the left in particular looks almost like a baby emissary, possibly in need of a diaper change.

Maybe it's that moment of hesitation that they seize upon to strike.

Are those designs rendered on pc with photoshop, or with traditional materials?

I like him, he makes me laugh. I think I'll call him Kevin.
