Just 'cause a Blight ends doesn't mean all the Darkspawn drop dead, it means they go in search of a new Old God and dig scaly ass up.

Also note: remember the Architect and Mother are starting sh*t post Blight so its a good 3-4 years of Darkspawn Surface Incursions.

Well I think if the new designs do anything better than the old ones it's that they get across the idea - visually - that they are corrupted beings closer to mutated zombies than simple never-were-humans/dwarves/elves/qunari-monsters-from-hell. The DA:O Darkspawn basically looked like Orcs. These look more like the way I would probably picture Darkspawn if I had simply read about them. Minus the changes to their armor and such, not sure I get that.

Actually, Awakening was 6 months after Origins.

So, 2.5 years until that all ends.

And, the darkspawn were in Ferelden. Southern Ferelden.

It's almost as if the Dragon Age: Journeys team presaged the new art direction.

With maybe a little bit of this:

Hahaha- I LOVED those books! Seriously, the illustrations in those were so freakishly bizarre and disturbing for a kids book- the stories were pretty freaky too...

THATS scary- the new hurlocks or emissaries? Not so much.

The Emissaries remind me of Pyramid Head. Why? I have no idea...

Okay, can someone remind me which book that's from? I ABSOLUTELY remember that illustration because it was freaky. However, it was so long ago that I just don't remember which book it was...

...that's precisely what I was expecting until the Darkspawn got their own "know your enemy" preview.  Now I'm thinking they're more important, which would be annoying to me personally.

I don't see it, they had creature updates for Arcane Horrors and Devouring Corpses with Origins and neither of them were particularly prevelant nor dictated what enemies you would mostly be fighting. The fact that the first creature for DA2 that they showed off was a Strider indicates that they are putting in a bunch of things to that part of the website. I don't see us fighting Striders at every turn, nor do I see it as an indication that the Darkspawn will be more prevalent.

I expect it's just a nothing update to keep it looking busy and to educate the uneducated. I hope I'm right though, as I am in the same camp as you in not wanting many more Darkspawn encounters. I still shudder when I have to go through the Deep Roads again in DAO as it is.

I do want to see what Genlocks look like now though, I thought they were strangely cute in Origins.

Ah, that'd explain my overreaction then - I didn't pay attention to much of this stuff at all during the lead-up to Origins.

Funny enough, it seems in more recent editions they got rid of these illustrations. Bah! What little kid doesn't want to read a scary story and see this?

I really hope DA 2 has a scary or at least atmospheric scary part- the Deep Roads I always thougt should be a genuinely scary area with hardly any light and just tremendous atmosphere, yet they weren't. Maybe they'll fix them up in DA2....

The new Hurlocks look absolutely ridiculous to me. Emissaries, meh, they're ok I suppose, better than simply genlocks or hurlocks with a couple feathers and some face belts..

But really, we're all desensitized to horrific looking monster models. There's not much out there that scares me at all besides maybe this..

I love being scared to death. I also really hope DA2 contains some part of it that gives me nightmares. Besides the Art Direction.

I really couldn't care less what Darkspawn look like, as long as they look somewhat menacing; they're going to be dying anyway.

The hurlocks look exactly like the in-game darkspawn, to me, so I'm not all that keen on them. That's to be expected since I really don't like the new art direction at all, though. Hasn't that picture been around for a while? I'm certain that I saw it quite a while ago.

My only problem with the emmissary is the incredible level of retconning it takes to call that an emmissary. Some continuity would be nice. I mean, that's just totally different.

Sidenote: OM freaking G. Those illustration's are from children's books? Those are terrifying.

I don't know why a lot of people hate the new darkspawn look, especially the hurlock, in Origins they really didn't give the whole mythical creatures that invade the surface every now and then vibe, the new look is really different I'll admit that but it establishes a base they can work with.

Hurlocks - Do not like.

Emissaries - Are tolerable.

Overall I really wish the darkspawn looked more horrific.

So those are the Hurlock and Emissary? All I can say is LOL. Does everyone have to have those comical spiky shoulder pads? I hate them so much. Hurlocks get two. It makes me laugh till I cry. Then I just cry.

Meh, I was hoping we were mostly done with the whole Darkspawn thing. Ah well - guess I'll see how it turns out.

Judging by the Emissary's write up I would imagine we run into them in the Deep Roads at some point. This seems even more likely considering the Deep Roads concept art and the snap shot of what looks like a Deep Roads cave in the Destiny Trailer.

It's just a rewording of the codex entries/writeups from Origins.  It probably bears little resemblance to their actual role in the game.

I like the hurloks, but the emessaries are a little odd with a belt over their faces, I would prefer a tattoo or war paint, and I hope that genlock (dwarven darkspawn I think) will get the same "love" and detail

Especially the Hurlocks now look less imposing - they look like plagued verminious scum. But I kind of like that going with the apparent theme of DA2: the Darkspawn have been beaten again, and a new threat arises - the strong, vigorous, imposing Qunari. It creates a nice visual divide between rabid Darkspawn and the intense Qunari, upping the ante in a sense.

it kinda makes sense you know.....Darkspawn living underground and all

Is that from "The Descent"?

Anyway, I like the way the Emissaries look.
