ME2 had better and more entertaining characters though, some of the ones in ME1 were a bit standard and boring at times.

And I think you're gonna wait a long time if you want all DLC released. And besides, all DLC released after the last one take place AFTER the main plot. Lair of the Shadow Broker (the latest DLC) can be played after the main plot (there's different dialogue)

I was about to post that. The character development in ME2 is much better than than the one on ME1. Mainly due to the recruitment/loyalty missions.

That said the character development in ME2 feels off. Like for a lot of them it just seems to stop after only a few interactions, and you cant have any more conversations with them. This leaves you really wanting to know more about these guys, but unable to. Which was a bummer for me.

Bah, Wrex was just a bland version of Canderous Ordo. Only Garrus was cool, he's Batman after allKhayness wrote...

Mass Effect 1 definitely has a better story, and while I wouldn't say the characters in it are boring, more down to earth if anything, they aren't as exotic as the ones in ME2.

This.
Sometimes I feel like Kaidan and Ashley get a raw deal because they seem so normal. I love them both. I never found either of them boring or bland. I also thought there were way more opportunities to talk to them...get to know them.
Anyway. I like both games- for different reasons. I really don't have a favorite out of the two. OP, you should totally play ME2. It is good stuff. (:

LOL
There's no question that ME1 had a much better story.
And due to all the recruitment missions and variety of characters, ME2 had better character development. But the only reason ME2 had better character development was because it got rid of the plot, and replaced it with recruitment and loyalty missions. If ME3 can have a decent plot, and retain ME2's character development without making 20+ bloody missions to attain that character development, then we have a winning lottery ticket.

Also if you don't like the Loyalty missions just don't do them. As side quests go they are pretty fantastic.
Though in all honesty I would put the ME1 story slightly above ME2. Even though it doesn't have Martin Sheen in it.

Anyway ME 1 has a better plot but that’s to be expected. ME didn’t have to worry about conflicting with anything and is set up. Everything is fresh and new to the player so has more to draw from. ME 2 is a in a universe we are already familiar with and is the middle witch always seem to be the weakest point in a story. Still could have been much better IMO (tho you can say that about any story) and it feels like it was thought out after ME1 had already been made. If you’re making a trilogy you should have the plot for the whole thing at least roughly sketched up before you release anything so it flows and ties together properly. It dosn’t feel like bioware did this.
Characters...hmmm I flick around on this one a bit. There are more characters in ME2 and they feel more involved because you get to know them thru the loyalty and recruitment missions (which are excellent btw) rather than just in conversations between you and them aboard the ship. The missions make you more involved in their own story and show how they respond not just to you but to others and situations. I think most people find them more interesting because their more, as Mike2640 already said “exotic” but they are also rather clichéd. The ME1 character are more ‘normal’ and rounded. I know people who act very similar to Ash and Kai, and Wrex like he could be a real person/ krogan/ whatever but they can sometimes be a bit boring. You don’t play a sci fi game for normal and average I suppose.

Tali was just a plot device to get off the citadel and you learned more about quarians than about her.
Garrus was just a walking example of the renegade/paragon system and had no impact on the plot at all.
Liara is too dependent on her romance and her voice acting was pretty bad back then. She basically just exists in that game for Shepard to have sex with her.
Wrex got alright character development surprisingly enough.
You learn enough about Kaidan's past to make him interesting to talk to.
Ashley is the same as Kaidan but I really didn't like her as much as I did Kaidan (also her background wasn't as interesting as his)

Still, it had much better and more extensive characters. You begin to feel invested in them after a while.

ME1 had the least number of plot holes. ME2's story felt rushed and unfocused, among other major flaws. This thread really belongs in the Spoilers section of the forums, so I'll just leave it at that.
