I want to play through BG 1, then import the stat increasing tomes (and only the tomes)  from BG 1 into BG 2, but not my character. Is there a way / reason to do this?  I thought there might be some new classes in BG 2 that weren't available in BG 1, so I would have more choices if I  made a new character, but if I want to keep the tomes, then I  probably can't keep my character right?

Edit:  Ok, maybe there's some other stuff I  might want to import that I don't know about yet. Enlighten me :D

If you use EasyTutu or BGT you can play with a BG2 class or kit in BG1. The tomes don't all work properly in vanilla BG2 (and you'd need to use some multi-player switcharoo trickery to get them), but you can use e.g. Shadow Keeper to increase your ability scores.

There are methods of importing some other items particularly those found in BG2 that are added by mods, but as Irrbloss says, not the tomes.

I see. I only wanted to play BG 1 to import stuff into BG 2, but if that's not possible, I will have to consider BG 1 is good enough to play as a separate game. You've saved me a lot of time I'd spend on getting tomes that can never be used. Thank you :)

Why would you not want to import your character?
If you don't like the classes (races) available to you, then install BGT or BG Tutu.

Oh, and the easiest ways to import are a) starting a multiplayergame in BG2, reimporting the main character, saving the game and moving the savegame folder from mpsave to save or B) Shadowkeeper. c) would be to pause the game immediately after gamestart (before the cut-scene begins) and dropping all your items on the floor, but I believe a number of mods (Fixpack for one) make that impossible now (and you wouldn't want to miss out on the Fixpack).

The tomes don't normally import. In the standard game only an imported PC can benefit from having used them in BG. In the BGT mod characters such as Imoen can retain any stat increases.

One option is to create your character in BG2, start and save a game then edit that save-game with shadowkeeper which can be downloaded from the internet. Add in whatever items you want or change your PC stats, or those of other party members and create a new save game.

All classes in BG1 can import to BG as a plain class or 1 of 3 kits. eg. fighter can become fighter, kensai, berserker or a wizard slayer. BG2 has additional classes (barbarian, sorceror, monk from memory plus wild mage if you've got Throne of Bhaal installed) that you'd have to start from new with. If you dual-classed to a specialist mage in BG that would (I think) also revert to a non-specialist at conversion.

As for items, there's not much from BG that won't soon have a better equivalent in BG2. A helmet and a fashionable item of unwearable clothing are the two that spring to mind.

Don't forget the Cloak of Balduran.
I just played a game in which aTweaks (scribe scrolls) and IR (most components) allowed me to have Viconia(CT) hold 100% resistance to everything (including magic) and maintain SI:A. (she also had ~160HP and an AC ~-20, but that didn't really matter anymore)
Just wanted to mention that somewhere, and since the CoB was essential for this, it seemed at least partially on topic. Image IPB

Edit: Too much time away from the old forums makes me forget which command is required for which smiley. Image IPB

I guess I don't want to resort to using Shadowkeeper or glitches in the game to import items that shouldn't be imported. So, if the tomes weren't meant to be imported in the unmodded game, then I won't import them.

However, I think you have a very good point, Humanoid_Taifun. I should have no problem at all importing my character. I don't mind at all importing a character that already used stat tomes. I also have no problem modding the game to allow dual classes to be used in BG 1 (at least I won't after playing through it once as a single class). Please explain what BGT and BG TuTu do. I searched for information on BGT and all I can find on it is that it stands for "Baldur's Gate Trilogy" and does something that treats BG 1 and BG 2 as one game. I also found that BG Tutu is supposed to make BG 1 playable with the BG 2 engine, but I'm not sure if this is the right BG Tutu. What are the implicadtions of using BGT and BG Tutu?

In another thread, I mentioned that I was about to install G3 and BGT to fix bugs. I'm assuming the BGT bug fix that was mentioned there is the same BGT mentioned here (please correct me if I'm wrong). But how does BG Tutu fit into this?

Please explain what BGT and BG TuTu do.

BGT and EasyTutu (which you want to use instead of BG Tutu) both allow you to play BG1 while using the BG2 engine. This means that you can use e.g. kits, that the game doesn't automatically unpause while on the inventory screen and a bunch of other things.

BGT and EasyTutu work differently. BGT takes the BG1 content and includes it in a BG2 installation, effectively creating a single, very long game. EasyTutu takes the BG1 content and essentially uses it to replace the BG2 content, so you'll play BG1 instead of BG2. It creates a separate, stand-alone installation for this.

There are numerous consequences from and (dis)advantages to either method. Which you prefer is largely a matter of preference.

In another thread, I mentioned that I was about to install G3 and BGT to fix bugs.

"G3" is the name of the community which put the mod together. The mod itself is colloquially known as "the Fixpack."

Also, you can dualclass even in the normal, unmodded Baldur's Gate 1.

In normal BG1, you can dual-class into a specialist mage. Can't do that in TuTu or BG2. I always converted Imoen into an Illusionist in vanilla BG1, but that's not an option now (I can't stand vanilla's UI).

An alternative to using shadowkeeper is to pause the game right at the beginning of BG2. (before they disappear) You can then drop items on the ground. The tomes however cannot be used in BG2 as has already been stated. However, if you have already used them in BG!, then those stats carry over into BG2.
