A conflict between the Imperial Chantry and the Chantry of Andraste (Black Divine vs. White Divine) perhaps? Maybe war will break out between them for some reason.

Actually that would make an awesome plot. Tevintir Imperium trying to regain the lost glory of ages past? I'm in 100% for that.

The only difficulty with that is it will force the Tevinter to fight on two fronts: against the qunari and the rest of Thedas. Not that I don't think it's an interesting idea, a lot of information implies that the two chantries will go to war with one another eventually. But maybe while the qunari are busy harassing people in the Free Marches, it will give the Imperium time to rebuild and regain momentum. 'Tis hard to say really, but I imagine there's more than one major conflict going on.

We've got plenty of asses to kick. Templars-Chantry, Qunari, Flemeth, maybe the Dalish?
But, I will once again remind the forums that one of the first things we were told about the game was "No secret organization. No ancient evil. No saving the world."
The focus is instead the question, "Who was the Champion of Kirkwall?" which, is you ask me, is totally awesome.

I suppose (but I maybe wrong) that DA2 has not a typical "main antagonist" if not for Flemeth (considering Morrigain's words at the end of WH). Hawke will get caught in between a series of political conflict and probably the most imminent threat for Kirkwall will be the Qunari invasion. But still, for the DA setting as a whole, I hope for a story more likely to the A Song of Ice and Fire saga (while the races of Thedas kill each other, a supernatural enemy grow stronger and stronger... and it's not the Darkspawn I'm talking about... they will be one of the possible ally in the last fight, considering your choices during the development of the franchise).

Well to be honest the first thing you have to rule out is the Qunari, the Qunari are going to be part of the story, a big part yes but not a central one, I guess this specific chapter of DA tells the story of the man who made Kirkwall a major power in thedas, maybe the fall of the chantry or even Kirkwall becoming a nation on its own like Nevarra, also the game could end with an exalted march being called on Kirkwall or something.

I'm hoping for something Irenicus style, which is to say an adversary, that has some shades of grey to him, and is relatable on human terms. Loghain would have been perfect if he had more screen time in the game, the Darkspawn were just generic force of nature type antagonist though.

agreed, the culmination of the landsmeet was to me far more interesting and enjoyable than the final battle against the archdemon.

Hawke is going to fight against Morrigan's child. I thought that was obvious.

Whether or not it's your child (or Alistair's), makes the sequel that much more interesting.

You gonna kill your previous character's son? Hmmm? Think the Witcher's plot twist ending except far more personal.

Who isn't even born at the start and then goes into another dimension? It's possible, certainly, but obvious? Not sure 'bout that.

It's not really a mystery, just not revealed yet, just like it was only later revealed that the Collectors are the antagonists in ME2. As we get nearer to the release date, they'll reveal the main outline of the DA2 plot

Yeah... I wouldn't pin too many expectations on that.  If that story arc does get continued I think it's going to be in a future chapter, DA3 maybe, assuming DA2 doesn't bomb and the IP gets shelved.  Maybe Gaider will continue it in another novel if that happens though.  (assuming he has the rights to do so)

And... I would love this.  I havn't been too impressed with the writings teams ability to make military manuvers and tactics come across as believable (particulary the logistics side of things)  Assuming they could pick up a writer that served as an officer and has studied and practiced such things, I would love for the conflicts in the game to be ramped up in scale.  That and the Imperium is the most interesting part of the setting to me.

Been an officer? Would be nice. But "played a lot of wargames" would probably suffice. I mean we are talking about fictional video game battles, not actually deploying to Afghanistan.

Isn't the chantry or even the tevinter thinking a little small? If an invasion by a vast, alien army is merely the subplot to a much larger conflict then I'm expecting the skies to crack open and hell to ascend. So to speak.

Very true for most people, actually most likely still overkill for most peoples enjoyment.  Having been an officer myself, my immersion in a game is broken pretty easily by that sort of thing though.  I was speaking just as to what my personal preference would be, not offering it up as a Universal Truth or anything.  But anywho...

The use of three exclamation points within the title surely got your blood pumping.

In the Mass Effect series we have Reapers! for the Commander to defeat. These dastardly creatures would destroy all advanced organic races to turn us into a gooey paste if not for our valiant SPECTRE.

In Dragon Age: Origins, we had the Blight! for the Warden to face off against. These dastardly creatures would destroy all non-darkspawn people and turn Thedas into a wasteland if nor for our brave Grey Warden.

In Dragon Age 2 we have... a mystery! We know that Hawke will become the Champion of Kirkwall, but what is the central conflict for the story? Who is our main antagonist that Hawke must go against?

I'm guessing that first, we fight of a Qunari invasion, then Flemeth's evil plot goes into action, and we have to stop her.  Flemeth is just made to be the "Big Bad" of a Dragon Age game.
