I've ensured my game is fully updated, and it used to function before. I'm fully updated on both, my old install has PRC + CEP, both updated. I can run the launcher and config just fine, but  the NWMain.exe just sort of... Does nothing. It appears in task manager and has to be forcibly ended, but it doesn't do anything. I'm using an ATI Radeon 4800 HD series, running Windows XP. What am I doing wrong? Help would be much appreciated!

Sorry oh god I am not good at computers!

I would reinstall .Net framework 2.0 (even if you have a more recent one)

Will this affect other programs, etc, on my computer? I'm a bit of a bufflehead when it comes to this sort of thing.

Not at all. Your computer has probably a more recent version of .Net Framework installed. Its a Microsoft product for other software to use. Installing version 2.0 will just copy over some parts that Microsoft didn't include in version 3.5, but are necessary for some older games.

I don't garantee that will solve your issue though, but it can't hurt to try this and in the worst case it will help other older games to run.

Sorry about taking so long!

Evidently I can't install the .Net 2.0 because I have a Service Pack already on it, according to Microsoft's helpful error message database. What should I try next?

Have you installed the latest drivers for your graphic card? It sounds like you are missing the opengl libraries or maybe are corrupted. You can download the latest drivers here: http://downloads.gur...nload-2644.html

Did you try changing the compatibility mode?

Updating the drivers has no effect.

Do note that it hangs in the background as a 'hidden' process. using 0% CPU. This seems to occur during the CD check that appears to be running. Adding or removing the disk has no effect as should be expected. Also the memory usage of the process sits idle at 30,268 K on my machine.

Whatever you do, do not install .NET Framwork 4.0.

It screws your system plain and simple.

Can anyone confirm that netframework 4 interferes with NWN?

Bump, because it's the only other place that has the same problem as I do.

My PC has been completely unchanged for the past 5 years and I wanted to replay NWN, but it suddenly decided to not work any more after I reinstalled it.

Really, there still isn't a fix for this? Or even possible solutions?
Does the game require any other obscure pieces of software to run?

My PC's specs have been the same for like five years and the last time I played NWN was a year ago.

AMD Athlon XP 2800+ 2.5ghz
Geforce 7600GS BFG 512mb
2gb ram
Windows XP SP3

I have no idea what caused it to stop working, everything that could possibly be updated is updated, though I did have a bad virus a while back that installed that fake Antivirus program that's pretty notorious.
But, I managed to get rid of every trace of it easy enough and it didn't seem to ruin anything.

Have you installed .NET Framwork 4.0?

If so uninstall it with "Add/Remove programs" in control panel.

I have very similar specs as the OP and my Windows XP is fully updated minus .NET 4.0 and all is
well. When I did install .NET 4.0 back when they released it, it totaly screwed the smooth functionality
of my XP SP3 install and screwed some programs.

Funny how you mention something and people don't listen and ask for someone else to confirm when I had
done so.

Anyhow, I thing .NET 4.0 is Microsoft way of trying to have people think XP is not viable anymore... kinda... in an
attempt to trick them into thinking they need to get their "new shyte" WIN 7. :P

Well the only advice I can give you since I can't be physicaly at your computer is to
"RE-Install Windows XP" fresh.

The malware "Fake Anti-virus" might have made some hard to identify Registry entries and/or
setup some rules in your security system that might affect the game and possibly other software aswell
that you may not have noticed yet.

This way, after a fresh install with your disk Formated before the new install, IF NWN still does not
work, well... I really don't know what to tell you as I have never had any problems with the game in
Windows XP regardless of the many different hardware systems I have had since the game released.

I've contemplated doing a reformat but I've been putting it off until I get the money to upgrade... which is taking way too long to do.

Meh, might as well take the plunge... just have to find my XP cd first.

I hate to resurrect such an old thread but I am having this issue just after installing Service Pack 3 on Windows XP Professional. More specifically, it ran fine at first, but now does not run at all. What's strange is that it SEEMED to be running fine up until I installed Paint.NET, and now nwmain.exe does not do anything when executed.

nwtoolset.exe and nwn.exe function fine, although when I press Play on the menu, again, nothing happens. nwmain.exe does not even seem to be running as a process in the task manager.

EDIT: Ah. I fixed it.

For future reference, here's what I did:

I went into my Neverwinter Nights folder and deleted the NWShader plugin. You may not have this in your game due to it being part of the Nwshader plugin. You may be able to fix it after reinstalling the plugin. Something about this being seemingly incompatible with SP3 or something similar is what causes this issue. This is what solved it for me, hopefully it helps.

This should probably be called to the attention of the Shader team here.  Whether it's a nuance of the plug-in itself or your own configuration is a question they would be better versed to answer.
