I always failed at making decently playable builds, even though I love both the original NWN and NWN 2. I always had to resort to cheating, lol.

This time I'd like to do it right. Races I'm considering are Drow, Half/Drow, or possibly human. I see there's a great character builder site -- problem is I have no idea what I'm doing.

Any help would be appreciated -- particularly with the particulars of starting stats, where to keep dumping stats as I level, etc.

What level? 30, or less?

There's two approachs to Warlocks: Charisma based, for better invocation DCs, or Dexterity based, for better AC and ranged touch AB. I'm not sure which one is better, I usually have decent scores in both stats.

It's also good to go with 13 or more INT for (Improved) Combat Expertise, and keep it activated all time.

Races: anything can work unless you multiclass. classes with bonuses to the mentioned stats are a bit better, obviously. I like Human or Strongheart Halfling.

This is a good, simple and pure Warlock build, if you want an example:

Thanks for the link!

If I go more charisma based, would I be a super squish?

EDIT: And that link doesn't include any of the hellfire warlock levels, which thematically I want. Any suggestions modifying that to include both hellfire and drow?

I like to spread my stats. For the typical Warlock, even if you go CHA-based, decent DEX (14-16) is still recommended, as it helps your blasts to hit. And I said, at least 13 INT for Expertise. Decent CON is also advisable. You can dump STR and WIS with no problem.

So in the end I'd leave CHA at 16 or so. I'm talking about human stats here.

Oops, sorry, I forgot it was a Hellfire what you wanted. It's basically the same, take the necessary skills for it and take 3 levels whenever you want (level 10 as earliest). With Drow you can simply drop Spellcasting Prodigy and start with 2 more CHA, and no changes made. Or you can drop a different feat.

You lose 1 or 2d6 damage from blasts, but no big deal. If you use Kaedrin's pack, you won't lose anything.

Heheh, no problem. Thanks very much for all the help. I wanted to try a drow specifically because I did the aasimar and had everyone be all "Oooh, you're awesome!" so I wanted to get some prejudice for a change, haha.

Unusually, Aasimar is (imo) one of the best classes for warlocks thanks to the +2 CHA with only a +1 level adjustment (of course, Drow get DEX as well as CHA, and spell resistance too - pretty good if you don't mind the +2 LA).

I'd also agree about spreading stats. Usually, powerbuilding seems to focus on pushing one stat very high, but if you have a build which benefits from multiple stats, it's better to spread them at least at first level when it costs more to push a single one high. I also don't like dumping stats, though that's for RP preference rather than gameplay.

About stats (power gaming perspective):

If you go CHA-based, as said, a decent DEX is recommended.

If DEX-based, you can dump CHA completely.

If you're only going to play at low levels (my case, usually, I play modules), spreading them is definitely better, IMO. 16/16 is better than 18/8.

Yes, I like decently-high CHA since I enjoy my dialogue options. I took your advice though and did a decent spread. :)

A good warlock already starts out with spread stats. It's how he advances that matters. I see no reason to go past 18 dex unless the module has lots of high touch attack ACs, which I have never seen. So you're better off increasing cha for DCs and convo.

Well good. I wanted CHA-heavy anyway, good to know I'm not gimping myself unduly. :)

I do have a specific question regarding the Peanut Picard build (I snicker at that name every time). Combat Expertise...what exactly is it doing for this build? Just free AC (not that that's a bad thing, I just prefer to make informed decisions)?
