Attention: if you want to discuss the matter presented below, please be willing to bear with me and momentarily accept as "right" some of the things I state. I wouldn't want pointless contestation to derail the thread.

In DA:O, (heterosexual) love interests for each sex were, so to speak, "opposed" following a certain mechanic, which my fellow Tropers might have recognized as "Betty and Veronica".
Female Wardens could choose between Alistair and Zevran. Ali and Zev were, respectively, the "sweet" and "spicy" option. One is nice and a little awkward, while the other is more experienced and, so to speak, smoother- I know he sort of loses his cool at a certain point in the romance, but still.

Males could choose between Leliana and Morrigan. The two were respectively the "hot" and "cold" option. One is passionate and wants to form a strong, long-lasting bond while the other wants a more friends-with-benefits approach (which fails spectacularly if you pursue the full romance path, but that is not the point).

Now, the only LI we know of in Dragon Age II is Isabela. Let's assume that in the sequel Bioware will use more or less the same mechanic I illustrated above.
So far, I'm inclined to believe Isabela fits the mold for a "spicy" romance option: she's experienced, as many Wardens know (wink wink nudge nudge) and I'm pretty sure her approach to a relationship with Hawke will be somewhat aggressive.

Now that all the reasoning is out of the way, let's get to the speculation.

* Seeing as the males will possibly get the spicy/sweet options, does that mean females will choose between "hot" and "cold"? What  do you think male LIs who follow this mechanic would be like?

* If Isabela is indeed the spicy option, what character would fit the mold for a "sweet" option?

TL; DR - Get a freaking attention span.

Discuss.

how about a strong but gentle female knight commander for the sweet option?

You didn't mention how females / males could romance Leliana / Zevran respectively. :P

But in all seriousness, I am hoping for more options this time around, for both our homosexual and heterosexual friends (and the bis, I love you guys/gals the mostest!).

I think more options would mean less quality. I'd be seriously pissed if four amazing LIs a la DAO were substituted by six mostly good LIs a la Mass Effect 2.
I have unconditioned faith in the DA writing team, but I'll take quality over quantity any day.

But what if we got six amazing LIs? That'd be awesome.

Sure, quality > quantity. But a girl can dream, right?

Awesome indeed, but al lthings considered I'd rather not take my chances on such an important part of the game.

Yet another "tame the wild spirit" option would be a total letdown for me. Nor another milk money romance. I'd hope for a Fallen-From-Grace type romance, but there's a clear distinction between my hopes and expectations in this regard. Well, decency is nice.

And, no, I'm NOT talking about Aerie. God, no.

Haven't played BG, so I can't quite comment on Aerie. Also, care to expand upon your concept of fallen-from-grace? Sounds intriguing.

I want a Blond Female Elf for the "sweet" romance, sort of like Katriel in The Stolen Throne

A Succubus that you're not allowed to kiss or else you die.

I think the betty and veronica thing likely comes as much from the writers need to create something distinct (and also write two things they find interesting) and memorable on it's own as it does the trope.

Personally, given how....open Isabella is likely to be (too early to be throwing the word "****ty" about?), my money would be on a character with a lot of barriers to break down. Someone who is very cautious, and, as you say, more on the "sweet" side of things.

edit: apparently I can't use that word at all.

Sorry for delay; I wasn't around.

She's indeed an intriguing character. As Dave said, she's a succubus, though she's the opposite of everything you'd expect from a succubus. Including her being a symbol of virtue. Her romance develops on a more...romantic and much less physical arc, partly because of the reasons Dave stated (which actually makes little sense since we're talking about The Nameless One here) and her chastity.

So, yes, both the character and the romance progression are a welcome relief after numerous examples of, uh, adventurous relationships with adventurous people, and they also avoid falling into the pit of "warming up the shy cutie" nonsense. Fallen-From-Grace romance is, well, romance. At least, much more worthy of the term, if you ask me.

I'd actually quite like a balanced LI in DA2.

A female LI who isn't shy and retiring, who isn't aggressively tarty, and who isn't wracked by some random trauma that I have to resolve for her. I generally play my protagonists as reluctant heroes, and it'd be nice to have a female LI who was of a similar perspective before the inevitable romance blossomed.

I wouldn't mind another "sweet" romance option, like Alistair and Leliana, but what I think would be the bee's knees would be an LI who's sweet and spicy all at once. Anders from Awakening comes to mind, in fact, even if he was never an LI to begin with. Seriously, who wouldn't be interested in a guy who wuvs whittle kitties and can do a spicy shimmy? Total hawt factor. Really hawt ... like North Texas summers hawt. *dies from the extremeness that is the ultimate LI*

I'd be all for that; they were really great characters, even though you only got to play with them for an hour or so :)
