I'd love to romance Ariane and Finn from Witch Hunt.

I'd be all for that; they were really great characters, even though you only got to play with them for an hour or so [smilie]../../../../images/forum/emoticons/smile.png[/smilie]

Edit: crap, stupid quoting thingy!

They set the bar so high with DA:O, I kind of feel sorry for them in terms of how incredibly difficult it's going to be to create LIs that people will feel as strongly about.

Quite easily, infact. They just need to write a character and a dozen of people will ask "Can they be romanced?". :P

Edit: That was a joke, please don't devour me whole! *cowers*

I agree--whether or not you actually liked the people you romanced, I can't see how anyone could argue that DAO didn't have the best romances in any BioWare game thus far. They might not be your favorites, but wouldn't it have been nice if, say, Bastila's romance had the same depth and attention to detail as Morrigan's?

When I played ME2, I couldn't like any of the romances because they all felt shallow and short. I had to put down both DAO and ME2 for a few months, then pick up ME2 again to be able to appreciate any of them.

I kinda agree, it's one of my main concerns about DA2, that the characters just won't be as good

I don't think so...she is very insecure and kind heared as opposed to Morrigan who is very self assured and ...well...kinda evil in her own way

I like Velanna...besides as I said Delise's voice is awesome

That's nothing to go by since I've seen fan threads on a lot of (IMO) boring characters (from many different series)

I'd vote for BG2/PS:T romances when it comes to depth and attention, but this is all subjective, of course.

Like I said before, if there is one group of people I have blind inconditioned trust in, it's the BW writing team. They have never failed to deliver. While I agree that DAO set the bar pretty damn high, I'm certain DA2 will be at least on the same level.
On a side note, I loved the Bastila romance. The Light Side scene aboard the Star Forge is one of my favorite videogame moments.

I liked the Bastilla romance more than the Morrigan romance, I suppose there were much better elements in the Morrigan one, but I think you had plenty of content in it, and Bastilla featured more heavily into the main plot of KoTOR than Morrigan did, IMO. At least, she didn't pull out any last minute plot-bombs on you (she did it midgame instead!)

It was fun. Well except for the confrontation on top of the Rakatan temple. I was all "No Bastila, don't give in to the Dark Side!" while every cell in my brain was screaming to slap the Sith out of her. Get a hold of yourself, girl, dammit.

But on the darkside, Bastilla's loyalty pledge is awesome.

Though I think the OP's points are well stated, and many other fine examples have been made over the course of the thread, I think this time around BioWare will likely try something new, or at least a "mix" of concepts, with the story's respective Love Interests. If you look at every BioWare title that has included LIs as options, each consecutive title has tried something new or played with the preconcieved concepts a bit. If you look at how Romances where handled between the Baldur's Gate series and Neverwinter Nights, there is a significant difference.

In BG I-II the romances played out over the course of the series and were in-depth enough that one could even impregnate thier respective love (I don't know if it worked in reverse, I never played BG has a Fem Hero) over the course of the series. Also, the Romances where as varied as thier endings; i.e. Aerie (my favortie) was the "Super Mega Happy Ending" followed by Jaheira who was the "Bitter Sweet Ending," and lastly by Viconia who was the "Romatic/Tragic Ending."

In Neverwinters Nights the Romances where more subdued and seemed to have been set up so that they never really became as impactful as the story, though it was a step closer to the concepts that would become more of a staple in BioWare Stories. Linu was a perfect example of the Sweet/Awkward LI, while Sharwyn was the Sexy/Spicy LI. Though those romances never amounted to much aside from a bit of "Let's see what happens when this is all over," dialogue from Linu and a Kiss from Sharwyn, I think they really set the tone for the kind of Romantic concepts that would come later.

Next came Kotor, and the Singular Romances for the Male or Fem Revan. Both Characters encompassed *all* the attributes of LIs from previous BioWare titles in one package. Both Bastila and Carth could be Sweet, Spicy, Sexy, Brooding, and Cold depending on where the PC was in the relationship with them. Though rumor had it that BioWare wanted to include more Romances for the PC (Mission for Males -a slightly older Mission-, Juhani for Females) the idea was scraped by LucasArts in favour of keeping the Romances more "Star Wars." And it worked to some degree. At the game's climax when you had to choose between either the Galaxy, Your Romance, or Having Both the emotional impact was effective.

Next, we had the LIs of Mass Effect, which took a page from Kotor in that all three (though envisioned originally as *four*) LIs encompassed various personality traits and concepts. Liara, Ashley, and Kaiden could be Sweet, Sexy, or Cold depending on how your Character Pursued them. Though Liara was the more gentle/awkward out of the trio, BioWare attempted a kind of emotional Balance game between them. With ME2 the Romances took a similar route, but were given extra layers of complexity or depth. I think the most interesting Romance (aside from the fact that Tali was my favorite) was Samara's romance; basically, all the pieces where there, including mutual love and attraction, but something "more important" had to come first. It was a unique and slightly jarring outcome, and I think it showed that BioWare and it's brilliant writers have no desire to stick with the same formula again and again. They want to experiment, mix things up.

Since DAO has been covered in depth, I won't go into details, suffice to say with Dragon Age 2 I would not be surprised to see a mix of what we had in ME2 instituted in the DA sequel. We know Isabela is promiscuous and open minded in her views of "Romance" but we don't really know all the details, so it might be too soon to drop her in the "Spicy" catagory. There might be much more too her then that. As for the supposed "Sweet" LI, well, I have my Heart set on Aveline, though much like Isabela we don't have alot of details, less even. She has not even been confirmed as a LI. Even if she is, given her background as a Templar's Wife (possibly not a happy marriage) there could be far more to her character then simply being DA2's Leliana.

To sum up, BioWare loves to mix it up when they can, so any preconcieved notions of Romance Templates should be kept on the back-burner until we can sit down and see how things play out. At this point, all we're likely to do is get ourselves all excited for Romances that *might* not play out as we think they will. Still, looking forward to it.

Kind of off topic, but I realized something last night I found a bit funny.

I got it on with Isabela with my human mage, who's last name is Amell or whatever, which Hawke is related to somehow since that is his...moms sideo of the family, yes?

Anyways, any chance that could pop up?

Isabel - "Wait, so you're related to the Amells?"

Hawke - "Yes, why?"

Isabel - "So...you were related to the Warden?"

Hawke - "Yes? Can we get it on now?"

Isabel - "Oh..."

Can anyone say, sloppy seconds?

Back to the topic though. I predict Isabel will be the spicy type though, but I don't know for sure. She seems to show somewhat a deep compassion to Hawke, since she shows up in the Rise to Power and Destiny trailer, with her and Hawke showing signs of an intimiate relationship. We'll have to see though!

See Bastilla is the one that seems to be above the bar from DAO. That felt like it took effort and had depth.

My only gripes with DAO were that:
1. You could sort of tumble the whole romance out way too fast. I'm torn because in KoTOR/ME/ME2 the relationships had checkpoints that moved them forward and that was sort of annoying because you knew when you could "take it to the next leve;" but it did prove a bit more a real feel as opposed to the way you could string together all your romance conversations in a really short period of time in DAO - especially and unfortunately with Morrigan.
2. The gawd awful stupid sex scenes. Either suck it up and go back to to ME style scenes and take the heat from idiots or skip showing me anything.

I feel odd. It's a romance thread but I already know who the same-sex romance option is, so I'm indifferent to the conversation. This has never happened with a BioWare game.

I think the spicy/sweet thing won't effect so much considering you can romance them with rivalry or friendship. So the sweetness/spicyness of any LI could be extremely different depending on which route you take.

You know, I hadn't considered that. I'm dying to see how the friendship-rivalry paths work and what options they give us.:o

I totaly agree.
The romances should be more challenging, like in BG2 (where you could fail really hard)!

More than one doesn't really matter. It's five months before the game and I don't have to wonder if there will be a g/g romance. I assume this sense of contentment is what straight men get all the time. ^_^
