I hear good things about it--as pretty as vista and with some of the better features from it, and performs like XP. Whenever I build another PC I'm sure I'll get the 64 bit version of it.

If you have XP, you want it. If you have Vista, you don't.

I have been using Windows 7 for over 9 months now, from beta to release candidate to the gold copy off MSDN (I have had the full version for a couple months now). It is very stable, but then again I liked Vista, though that is perhaps because I always have new hardware and suffered no compatibility issues. Anyway, it is worth upgrading to, particularly if you are coming from XP. If you are coming from Vista, go for it if cash is not an issue, but there is no pressing need. It is prettier, more stable, but does not do much Vista can't.

I want it, but alas I have not the system I want to install it on. So until I get some spiffy new hardware I'll stick with XP.

I had Vista and decided to grab myself a student copy of Windows 7 Ultimate for $40 since this is the last opportunity I'll have to get an operating system at that price since I'm graduating soon.
So far, I've been very pleased with it. It's very stable and all my previous programs and hardware have been compatible. I even installed Baldur's Gate 2 to test compatibility and it worked. No problems at all.

Well, if you have Vista you might not want it as much, but I'd still recommend it, especially if you have annoyances with Vista. I've used Vista Ultimate x64 since it's release and have loved it as an OS, but W7 is just improving on it. If you are totally satisfied with Vista and aren't one to try to keep up with the new tech, you can probably forego W7 until your next upgrade easily enough.

Oh shoot does this mean they are gonna stop making games for Vista?

Chances are, if a game is compatible with Vista then it's compatible with 7. Think of Windows 7 as kind of like a separate patch that you had to buy for Vista that makes it better.

You mean start? Stop? What?
No, Vista's enough like W7 that games that run on one are almost certainly going to be fine for the other. I doubt that there'll be much trouble for QA to manage both. DX11 is being put into Vista, too, so when games start requiring it (or using it), only Vista and W7 will run them where XP is going to be left out. DX10 was a skipped version, more-or-less.

Ok thanks.

Good to know
I'll buy it, but I'm not in a rush anymore, thanks

If I wasn't for the fact that I'm getting it as a free upgrade I probably wouldn't get it.

I am getting my copy of home premium on 9 November. My supplier only has the upgrade and dsp's at the moment and I want full retail so have to wait.

Only thing that I personally don't like about it right now as of yet, is the lack of the xp quick launch bar. I can't drag and drop any shortcut I please to the bar only ones windows 7 allows. That is very frustrating.
for example, the windows update shortcut off of the control panel, i can drag it to the desktop, but i can't drag it to the quick launch bar anymore.
I think its called the superbar now, im not sure

I just did my upgrade through the student thingy. Its nice I guess, not too much new stuff but most of the changes from Vista are under the hood so to speak.
I can't find a way to customize the launch order in the Games folder anymore. Because Call of Duty, World at War defaults to start singleplayer and I want to switch it to default to multiplayer. I did it in Vista easily but haven't found a way to do it in 7 yet. Right now if I want to play MP, I have to right-click the icon and then select "Play Multiplayer" rather than double-left-clicking like I used too.
