I was just wondering as the Manshep is based on Mark Vanderloo who is the basis for the femshep model. Just Curious and I haven't manged to figure it out.

The male Shepard is considered the "official" Shepard. Femshep with full gameplay and voicing parity was put in for obvious reasons, but it's the male Shepard you see in all the promotional materials, game covers, demos, etc. I'm guessing it's because they made him the face of Mass Effect that they went with a likeness for him. If you notice with Dragon Age: Origins, for example, there is no "official" warden, and similarly there is no official face for the protagonist. The closest thing to one they have is the Warden they used in the trailers that was designed by Studio Blur, I believe, for their Sacred Ashes video, and then he just kind of stuck for the next ones.

According to Wikia it said there was a contest for the femshep face. I don't know the exact details of the contest but i though that she was based on a model, anyway as Mage one suggest it probably is that case.
