Hello all,

I am thinking about trying out archery for the first time. I plan to do-so with a rogue and had a couple questions I needed help wth please.

First, do rogues get bonus backstab damage using a bow or does backstab only apply in melee?

I was also wondering if all of the duelist talents apply to bows as well as melee weapons?

Thanks for the help everyone.

Backstab is for Melee only, Duelest talents that work for archery is Dueling sustained spell and Keen Defense. Pinpoint strike and Upset balance really is meant for Melee only

AFAIK, Pinpoint can be intiated with a melee weapon, then switch to range for the brief period of bonuses.

While you may lose Backstab, you can use Stealth to help gain critical hits. If the first shot hits, it will be a crit.

The combat movement talent can also widen the arc for flanking bonuses as well to apply to attack rating and (partially) critical chance.

And just to jump the gun, archers DO get the benefit of the warrior talent Death Blow.

They do indeed. It's not really needed so much in Origins I think. In Awakening it's one of the reasons Spirit Warrior archers are so overpowered. You can keep up Beyond the Veil through nearly any battle because of Death Blow.

I still prefer rogue archers for some unknown reason.

Make sure you get Arrow of Slaying. The best mage killer in the game. If you happen to like to play as your companions once in a while make sure you give yourself a tactic to use it the second an enemy mage becomes visible.

Sorry, but the best mage killer would be mana clash! Of course, Arrow of slaying is very stylish for a sniper.

Nope. The best mage killer = Dog.

Enemy > nearest visible > mage > charge > overwhelm > shred!  Look for another.

Sorry, but no. Mana Clash is the best mage killer by far. It can one-shot even mage bosses. As if that wasn't insane enough already, they decided to make it an area effect spell.

I meant it was the best mage killer in the game for rogues and yes Mana Clash is the best mage killer in the game across all classes.

Arrow of Slaying can be a great mage killer but can also be unreliable. In my opinion, the best mage killing tactic for rogues is to sneak behind the mage, stun him, activate momentum and backstab him to death.

One-shotting a mage with AoS is sooooo satisfying.

Missing with AoS is sooooo annoying.

Arrow of slaying is a must. Also, if using Liliana, do not ever spec her bard skill (except for courage song). Check out Dragon Age Podcast Rogue Tips episode for a lv by lv guide to building a great archery rogue.
