Meer was ok...Hale just did such a tremendous job it made meer look bad lol

Funny, I thought it was the other way around, Meer sounds much better than Hale to me. :)

It's down to personal preference. I personally like Meer because the way he talks sounds a lot like the way I would. Joking around and not sounding overly emotional. I don't like Hale as much because she sounds so serious and "butch space marine" all the time. Has a tendency to put emotion into everything too. Some people like that better.

Frankly, I suspect that this may be a case of the people on the forums dislike Meer, but in general I've not heard many people complain about him. The forums aren't representative of the population as a whole.

Hale has considerably more voice acting experience than Meer; it's only natural for her to be more appreciated. She's actually been nominated for Best Voice Acting award for her role as Shepard in ME2 (along with Strahovski for Miranda). That being said, I like them both myself.

Well that, and some of us just don't have a need to shout it from the rooftops at every opportunity :)
I have my reasons for prefering one over the other, but I'm certainly not going to just spam that ad nauseum.

I've always thought their voices were fine.
But its just my opinion.

I would appreciate it if they gave all the actors a pronunciation guide. I laughed out loud when Ken and Gabby talked about being on the Peruggia at the battle of the Citadel and Jennifer Hale immediately in response horribly mispronounced it. I wanted Gabby to correct her.

Personally I prefer Meer over Hale. Hale just sounds like she's extremely bored or agitated when she delivers her lines. Meer fits Shepard's role as a soldier perfectly for me, not too emotional and a balance of austerity. Doesn't bother me, probably because I don't care to read into others' emotions irl.

It depends on whether you're going paragon or renegade. Many people call Meer's performance boring but I think he was going for deadpan. His renegade performance is perfect and leads to many laughs when he says the most badass and arrogant lines in the calmest manner. Hale puts more emotion in her voice which makes her paragon performance really good, but she's just too sensitive when she's renegade.

Hated Hale's performance, she sounded... forced in her sole. Most of her lines make me just collapse in my chair and say "Shut up already!". I couldn't get into the character at all, she sounds like she's trying too hard to be macho and do I even need to mention the Jacob romance lines?

Meer's performance has it's problems, I agree, however what doesn't? I enjoy his performance a lot and find all the hate he receives to be exaggerated. Just like the Hale love is exaggerated.

Though that doesn't really mean much when some of the nominees have like... one line of dialogue in the entire game, such as the Black Ops Lady or the Blur Lady.

Also, I know that people can be critics without being able to do something themselves, but I bet 95% or more of the people that play the game probably couldn't do any better.

lmao. Since when do I have to be better to critize someone else? If you go around telling everyone they're the best when they suck, they'll never get better. If you're bad, you're bad. Meer has a very unemotional, monotone voice. Hale has more experiance and it shows. Meer has a good renegade voice sometimes, but that's very situational.

Though I wasn't a fan of Meer's, I didn't think he was terrible. I just found him to have a very limited emotional range. I can understand why someone who doesn't pay attention to or care for emotional inflections would like this. I just don't feel the same. There were many lines where his delivery sounded flat or exaggerated because he tried for an emotion he just couldn't deliver. It made me cringe frequently when playing as a male Shepard. I personally found Hale to have a much better command of her lines on a regular basis. Overall, I was very happy with her work.

This has been an interesting thread. I previously strongly preferred one VA (probably due to personal preferences as said in the earlier posts), but I'm going to re-evaluate the other now having read your opinions.

Just a thought - do you think there's a bias for the VA caused by the default Male Shepard face? Many have described Meer's Shepard as "wooden", which is how I'd describe the default face for Male Shepard.

I would have liked Meer's voice to have a richer, deeper quality to it. Otherwise I am fully satisfied with the way he handled his lines.

I haven't experienced Femshep's voice though.

Because people love to create differences between each other. Voicing your opinion about the VAs has became more or less taking side and picking up arms to bash the others in pointless forum wars when there isn't anything better to do. :)

I myself can't stand FemShep, sounds so horrible for me compared to Hale's other works (Fall-From-Grace, Bastilla, Ophelia). Meer is cool, he has range (Tug is awesome) and an emotionless Shepard fits the role for me.

Art assets are usually one of the last things to be set in stone before a game goes gold as it's so easy to replace placeholder models, textures etc with new or refined final versions. Primary voice recording happens much nearer the beginning of a project, mostly through necessity (animations and cutscenes need speech and so on) and partly so there's plenty of time for re-records.

In the case of Mass Effect, this can be seen in early videos where Shepard looked quite different to how he does now. Most, if not all, of the final dialogue would have been recorded well before those videos were released.

The way I hear it, see it, is that the voice acting for the femShep and dudeShep were purposely made to be more forceful and authoritative because the Shepard character is supposed to be an edgy, "Only-One-who-can-get-the-Job-Done" type personality that other characters can accept as the person who will lead them into and possibly through a dire, yet heroic suicide mission.

The voice acting sounds good to me, especially when the dialog flows logically. I like the femShep better as well for the story line, at least in ME2, though I haven’t played ME1. She seems to fit better playing through the dialogs, and to me the best experience for either gender is a combination of Paragon, Renegade choices. It doesn’t help that what constitutes a Paragon or Renegade choice is not so different at times.

Meer was just bad in ME1 so they had a right to complain about that. He definately improved in ME2.

Hale has been brilliant throughout. At least compared to Meer.

In ME 1 they played it safe by making both Meer and Hale speak in this wooden tone probably because they thought that wouldn't rock the boat so to speak. ME 2 is much better in this regard. And the DLC's ramp it up even more.

It's a matter of preference, and which performance better fits your desired character.

For me, Hale does a good job at making my reserved, cold, and equally soulful Shepard more believable. On the other hand, I prefer Meer's performance when playing my main Shepard, who has a more laid-back and casual attitude, but is really forceful when under stress. Really, I don't understand people's strict preference for either VA... unless you have a narrow preference for what type of character Shepard is.

Edit: I'm talking about preference here, though. Both actors have some pretty laughable lines here and there, but neither one gives a truly superior performance. I think Hale gets a lot of praise because people recognize her as the more accomplished voice actor, but I didn't think she did that good of a job as femShep.

The voice acting is good. But, when female or male Shepard have moments of motivational speech, I'm never convinced. It may not be the actors fault. It's the writing. The crew already understood the situation, so they didn't need a motivational speech. There was no specific weakness in the crew that needed bolstering by a sermon. That's why those moments felt awkward.

Hale did great in ME1 and didn't really improve in ME2. Meer was a bit bad in some areas in ME1 but improved alot in ME2.

massive_effect: Yeah, some of the speeches were overdramatic. That is probably just because of writing, not voice acting though.

I like them both equally, while Hale can be overly emotional and Meer can be a bit stale at times, I don't think anyone can do any better playing as Commander Shepard right now. It does seem like some of the bad lines are more towards bad directing rather than their own talent as a voice actor but I digress.

Whenever I hear Meer I think of his improve.
