Just a thought - do you think there's a bias for the VA caused by the default Male Shepard face? Many have described Meer's Shepard as "wooden", which is how I'd describe the default face for Male Shepard.

I think it's definately part of the reason. I've never been a fan of the default face as I find it too clear cut, too poster boy. I understand that's what BioWare were going for, but it still irks me.
I did have a decent time with my custom mShep in ME1, but I've mostly played femSheps. It's just a theory but I think some people tend to connect more with the character when they start making them their own. I know the people in the femShep thread certainly grow attached to theirs and I've also spent plenty of time tweaking and re-tweaking my femSheps. I think customization matters.

I think both Meer and Hale do a great job personally (even though Hale was much better as Bastilla if you ask me). Think about the workload put onto both of them having to say thousands of lines of dialogue, probably more than any VA's in gaming history. Its understandable if every now and then they have a line that sounds "off". They are also probably the first VA's to go into the studio to record so all the other NPC VA's can react to their lines. Which puts them at the disadvantage of basically talking to themselves the entire time.

I have no complaints about Jennifer Hale's work as FemShep. I think she does an amazing job in Mass Effect and I've enjoyed a lot her other voice work as well. Mark Meer I go back and forth with, though. Some of his line deliveries are really awkward and I wonder sometimes if he has a little trouble getting into the character. He's not terrible or anything, but he's not my favorite either.

Saying that, it's really a moot point in my opinion. The voices are so inextricably linked with the characters now for me I wouldn't ever want them to replace either. :)

This pretty much sums up how I feel, Hale is a legend, like he said Meer is hit or miss. ME2 he made improvements but in many case he sounds disjointed.

I can't play as Hale. I like playing the Stoic and she overracts too many of her lines. Sure Meer does it onec in a blue moon but at least it's not common.

Meer > Hale

Indeed.

Hale sounds more or less like she does not care about anything that happens, she also sounds bored.

I think Meer is better when it comes to the snippy one liners. His comic timing is great and he never fails to make me laugh. That's why my renegade is a Male.

Hale is better at the more emotional scenes and I connect with her more. Maybe it's just because I happen to be female too. Whenever Shepard is allowed emotion is when Hale shines. Her talk with Liara in LOtSB was fantastic. My only complaint is that she plays it a little too butch an I would like to hear her laugh more.

Maybe Vin Diesel's voice sounds better for male Shepard?

I haven't played as my male Shepard through the second game yet, but now that I've read everyone's comments, I find myself looking forward to his delivery instead of bracing for it.

Hale in ME sounds way too over the top, so many things about her delivery make me cringe.

But that's just personal preference, some people obviously feel that way about Meer aswell.

It seems like a lot of people complain about the quality of the male and female Commander Shepard voice actors. I have never understood this, do they not like either of them because their accent or tone doesn't fit their preconceived notion of what they think Shepard should sound like?

I personally don't see any issues with either of the voice actors being too emotional/not emotional enough..

haha that's coz male shep sucks :P

there ,i said it .

I think Meers voice is fine, and because its been Meer for all the games, it's no longer about weather hes good or bad at it, he is just shepard (Well The voice of)

I can't comment on Hale as I will never play Femshep, As far as I'm concerned Shepard is male, I got Mass Effect on Launch day and he was on the front cover, and if you don't faff about with your character the Guy on the front cover is guy you control.

You're entitled to your opinion, but the guy on the cover of ME1 doesn't look anything like the default guy in the game.  Besides, he's just a generic, default form of Shepard (they had to put somebody on that cover).  Shepard is whoever we want him/her to be and look like, that's what made the game Mass Effect and the character of Commander Shepard so great.  I think you're missing out if all you play is the default, male shep.  Just saying....

Mark Meer doesn't do nearly as good a job as Jennifer Hale.  He's too monotone, and by playing both, you can see that he doesn't put enough "punch" behind his words as Hale does.  Jennifer Hale seems like she's enjoying playing the role of Commander Shepard, she puts some spunk into her voice.  Mark Meer sounds like he just got off a long plane flight and needs to take a crap and a nap.

There is also the fact I cannot take female action heros seroius (It may sound sexiest but its how I feel) Just can't picture a women saving the galaxy and being in the combat like that.
Men are in General stronger physically so It's hard for me to entertain a female lead.

This goes for all media movies include for me to

And the front cover shepard is default shepard, they could have put a picture of space and Mass Relay on the cover, but I feel they went for a male shepard and female option was orignally put in as an afterthought, then they ran with on Mass Effect 2 and 3.

I just thought Mark Meer's VO was weak in PT1. Its as if he didn't give a crap, or didn't take the role seriously. Same Goes for Martina Sirtis. I had ME for 2 years before playing with femshep and I was shocked with the difference in quality in VO.

I'm glad someone else out there recognizes  the horrifying Sirtis as Benezia: the poster-child of horrid voice acting.

I don't really complain but Jennifer Hale's voice really annoys me. She seems like a nice person but she makes FemShep sound so smug and irritating all the time, sometime it is just embarassing, FemShep often sounds like a try hard. Mark Meer makes Shepard sounds more natural and a more likeable leader to me.
